You want to plink and use for home defense??

In that case, the 9mm is what you want. Out of a 14-16" carbine barrel, it's nothing to sneeze at(for home defense) and the ammo is about the cheapest of all you've mentioned.

My UZI swears that I'm telling the truth.:D

I have 2 pistol caliber carbines, both 357 magnum. The longer one has a 22 (or may be a 24 inch barrel, I cant rememebr for sure). The other one has a 16 inch barrel.

I saw a Marlin 1894 once that was chambered in 50AE, I bet that is a powerful carbine!

I think the 50AE is a semiautomatic cartrage. But if you are talking semiautomatic guns I would go with a 9MM because of the cheep ammo, If you want power I have heard there are 10MMs and 50AEs out there. I think the 40s and 45s are just a compromise between the two.
