If you posted to, "3 must own handguns? " ...

22lr revolver
357mag revolver 4"

While I have and love 44mag. 357 is capable enough for lower 48. 4" is minimum for hunting in iowa not sure about other states. 4" is small enough to carry concealed by most anyone 5 or 6" would be fine as well.

If I could only own 2 this is what they would be

I like to keep the ammo simple. My choices are both 357 magnums.

1. 1911 style gun (in my case a Coonan Classic 357 magnum)
2. S&W J-frame (S&W 640 in 357 magnum)

What can I say I trust the 357 magnum...

p.s. I typically choose 4 kinds of pistols are necessary, Small target/plinking pistol, a CCW, a Semiautomatic and a hunting hand gun.

Left Brain
- Single 6 .22/.22 Mag Convertible - cheap plinking/practice and can still bring home the dinner or dispatch a varmint or snake if needed.

- S&W 65 Lady Smith (K .357) - effective SD in a reasonably compact, reliable, controllable and carryable package.

Right Brain
- Single Six .32 H&R Mag - no more pleasurable shooting exists IMO, and decent enough "pow!" to let you know it's no ".22 anything" and can handle varmints and small game and even an occasional mid-size predator type when called upon.
- Ruger New Vaquero .44 Special Sheriff - what I just said about the .32 Mag, just everything bigger - "pow!", critters, SD, in a big bore Old West- reminiscent package that's still "carryable."

No semi-auto "zombie" guns here and admit that's a failing, but these are my visceral choices ("you're magically stranded on a large jungle island for an indeterminate time and told that, while no militia or terrorist bands are present, there may be two, four or no-legged dangers of otherwise unknown/unspecified nature...and can have one handgun and 'some' ammo."). I'll add a Commander 1911 .45 or Smith M&P.40c back in at least as as an Honorable Mention--just because it sounds right :) . However, when push comes to shove, unless presented with a specific zombie scenario, my first thoughts run to a nice revolver--or two.

Ruger 22/45-thinking maybe a 4.5 inch barrel.

-Just a Stupid fun:D- shooting gun.

Smith 642.

-the pit bull in your pocket-

1) Browning Hi-Power 9mm
2) S&W 686P 6" .357 Mag

Between those two, you can get very cheap, low stress plinking rounds to combat rounds to hunting rounds to "exhibition level" subnuclear rounds for fun. :D

This is the easiest question I've had on TFL yet!!

The reason being is I only have 2, and so far they suit me very well indeed:

  1. Glock 19
  2. Ruger Redhawk 4"

Me likey....:D

For a lot of you folk this should be easy. Seem's that many of you picked both a 4" .357 and a 1911. Considering they fill identical roles just pick the platform you like best and you're down to 2 guns (this one and your 3rd gun).

My 2, .22lr and 4" .357. I can live without the dedicated CC or the large bore single action I listed as my third choice(s) in the last thread.

Medium frame .357 magnum revolver - covers home defense, concealed carry, and hunting

Medium frame .22lr revolver - allows cheap practice with similar platform to main handgun

Glock 19 - probably the most ubiquitous semiauto in the country, easy to service in an emergency

These three allow you to shoot I would guess 80% of all the handgun ammo that EXISTS in this country.
