If you only had one gun!

Doesn't it depend on your state?

I don't think I can have a Serbu Shorty in Illinois - even if I were federally legal, Illinois outright bans them.

Even if Illinois get a carry law - that won't overturn the section in UUW that bans AOWs in Illinois - I don't think. I'm never totally sure with NFA issues and Illinois law so I could be wrong...

I think the Mossberg 930 SPX is a great weapon system ( 9 rounds when ghost loaded) but I can't take it with me everywhere.

If there can only be one - it would have to be a pistol, it's the only form factor that I could take everywhere.

And of course it would have to be my beloved HK P7M8 - what an awesome feat of engineering genius it is.

It would be really hard to choose between the Saiga 12 and the Kel-Tek KSG. The KSG is more compact and can switch between two ammo types in an instant, but the Saiga's detachable magazines are hard to beat (when do you really need more than 12-14 rounds of 12ga, though? Besides, I've found changing mags on the Saiga to be kind of awkward). Of course if it has to be a gun that's available today, that pretty much narrows it down.

1911 or 357

I currently have a short (18" bbl) 12 guage, two 357mags, a 1911, and a 38 snub accessible for home defense. The 38 snub goes everywhere with me. If the restriction of only one gun for all protection was placed on me I would have to alter my carry habits to allow for the 1911 (45acp) with extra mags. I am old enough that I could carry my "bag of medications" and do it convincingly thereby being able to carry plenty of firepower. My second choice would be a S&W 686 with a 4" barrel. I am glad I am not restricted to only one gun. Variety good. In reference to "my bag of medications", I see guys carrying around fanny packs, medical bags. equipment bags, etc. and sometimes wonder if they are carrying a gun or not.

Only 1 gun, my handgun. Currently a .38 Airweight snubby. Easy to carry, easy to shoot, very reliable, sweet shooting. If I find a handgun I like better, I will switch to it. Can use with 1 hand or 2.

2nd choice would be a shotgun, but I don't have a short one. My pump is long & not practical indoors. Others are single barrels & a bit long too. Down the road, I'll get a short barreled pump or auto. But a shotgun is hard for me to use with one hand. I may need the other hand to turn on lights, open doors, etc.

If I had one pistol, it be an M&P (doesn't matter what caliber).

Ideally for HD i'd choose an AR15 Carbine, which would be my Bushmaster M4.

KBP, I think you're good to go. I would probably have the Mossberg 500 Field/Deer Combo if I lived in the country and their 500 Field/Security Combo if I lived in the city. Versatile, reliable, inexpensive sport and defense sets.

Obviously if I thought I'd have to carry it too I'd have a handgun -- S&W 686+ 5" (stainless 7-shot .357 Magnum revolver).

Just noticed this thread. I guess we went almost a week before someone posted this same old tired subject.

Only One?

" If I only had one gun"....I'd defend my home with that until help arrived an brought more guns. The go-to gun of my choice is one of my AK-47 "hunting" rifles.

The only gun in the world that will do everything is the shotgun.

It won't reliably take deer or antelope in open country......

DoubleJ, the main advantage of the AK-47 is that you can drop it in mud and it will still fire afterwards. If you were in an infantry unit or insurgency cell, it would be a good gun, yah. It's quite useless for much else. Not very accurate and not very powerful.

I'd take that over a shotgun, for just about everything but bird hunting or HD.

Hi Vito! This may be an old tired subject to you, but not for many new students! Sometimes, you have to remember the tired old guys need to repeat the old lessons they learned and talked about to the new students and members. Sometimes, the lessons can be changed or improved. If not, retelling or discussing them with new members can't hurt! I learned a lot and enjoyed reading everyones thoughts! Thanks everyone! Ken :)
