If you fire your carry gun at the range...

Clean mine same day - Always

I almost always fire some FMJ from my 1911 carry gun wheter or not that is why I'm at the range. After shooting, I reload with Fed HST's and then continue to carry it that day - It gets a detailed cleaning that night once home. The Sig 1911 is pretty tolerant of firing reliably even when dirty, so I am not concerned during the day after I've been at range and until cleaning.

Firing my carry gun at the range

I don't fire the gun I'm carrying at the range. If I want to shoot the gun I've been carrying I put something else on, go to the range and shoot the gun I was carrying before. I don't carry a gun I've fired at the range again until I've given it a thorough cleaning. Once it's cleaned I may go right back to carrying it again or I may just keep carrying whatever took it's place. If I only had one defensive hangun then I would definitely want to clean it before reloading it with my carry ammo and trusting it to protect me. The instructor for some recent training that I took recommends conducting a firing pin check after the gun has been taken apart and reassembled. Making sure first that the gun is unloaded hold the gun with the muzzle facing straight up, place a pencil eraser first down the barrel and pull the trigger. If the firing pin protrudes past the breach face like it should the pencil will be bounced upwards maybe even out of the barrel.

With my Ultra CDP, I shoot the pencil at my bed against the pillow. You can use a BIC pen too, but the eraser on a pencil absorbs some of the firing pin's vigor and thus the pencil isn't quite so violent.
