If you could only have three?

If you could only have three firearms for the defense of your family and self at home, on the town, in the wilderness (eg., camping or hiking), etc., etc. What would they be? Be specific about brands and models.

Ruger SP101 in .357 magnum for home defense, CCW, hiking, etc. Mossberg 500 12ga. pump, FN-FAL in 7.62mm NATO or an M1A. The shotgun would be for repelling boarders at close range 0-75 yards. The FN-FAL would be for L.A. riot-type scenerios. More important than the individual firearms though is a healthy stock of ammo. Say, 1000 for the rifle, 500 for the shotgun, 500 for the handgun. A Ruger 10/22 could also come in handy simply because you could have so much ammo stocked for it. But you said only 3 so...

You make a good point with the Ruger 10/22, especially if you want something light including the ammo, with a minimal report, for food gathering (eg., rabbits, squirrels, etc.). I sold most of my firearms awhile back for some financial reasons. Now, I am active in the hobby again. :D I went to a local gunstore yesterday and I was like a kid in a candystore. In the next few days I am looking to pick up a Krebs AK-103K, G-19, and a shotgun of some sort. I haven't decided on which shotgun yet. Now, I will probably add the Ruger 10/22 to my list. I guess I'll have to stretch the list to FOUR.

I was taught that you needed 4 types of firearms.
1) Major caliber rifle
2) Major caliber pistol/revolver
3) Common caliber/gauge shotgun
4) .22 LR rifle & pistol

This way you cover all your bases and needs. My rifle is a 308, pistol is a .45, shotgun is a 12 ga and the .22s are all Rugers. Now all someone needs do is Practice & PRACTICE some more !
Targets UP !!

Art & Schmidt, can you blame me?

Hey Art & Schmidt, can you blame me for having fun with the BATF posts when someone asks for specific makes and models of the guns we would like to have? It is just to tempting!

Lets see, three guns. To the hell with that.

1) M1A
2) Rem 870
3) M1 Carbine
4) Glock 27
5) 1911 .45
6) Rem 700 VS in .308
7) Ruger 10/22 match

I could be content with only those firearms. Of course those are not the only ones I am content with!

Only three, huh? If only three I'd have to pass on the handgun.

1) M1A
2) Mossberg 500 (12 gauge 26" vent rib and 18.5" smooth bore barrels)
3) Ruger 10/22

That's three. If I can add a fourth . . .

4) Glock 23

Let's see now:

1) AR15 for LA riots situation
2) AR15 for the "Red Dawn" situation
3) AR15 for the "Tremors" situation

Preban Bushmaster AR in M4 flattop format in 223
Remington 870 Express Magnum 12 gauge pump 18.5" barrel
Kimber Gold Match 45ACP

Only 3! Mel Tappan would turn over in his grave. Well if its only three then they would be a good quality AK(Krebs or informer conversion of the saiga), Rem. 870 with 2 barrels, 18" with a/sights for buckshot & brenneke slugs & a 28" w/interchangable chokes & finally a .22 pistol(Ruger or Browning). If I could have four, it would be a centerfire pistol in 9mm.

Ha ha CorG....LOL (Termors)

1. Ruger GP100 357
2. Persuader 12ga
3. Bushmaster AR
*if a cleaning kit is not available, then I would sub the AR for a Polytech AK.

What I have that I would keep if rules came into effect today: 1991A1, M1 Carbine, Remington 30-06.

Gun's I cant swear I would like for that situation but as the grass is always greener (especially with firearms you've never actually tried or have not really worked with enough to see their weaknesses) I'd pick: Glock 23, Robinson Arms expeditionary rifle, Kimber 22LR Bolt action (small game and fun).

Not anymore....

Just the thought of having to choose three brings me much inner turmoil and stress.:(

However...

There was a time when I DID only have 3 guns and I felt well armed, ready for anything, and at complete peace with the known firearms universe. It was a simpler time. They were..

Winchester 1300; slug and vent rib barrel (with a few tubes)
Ruger 10/22 with a 3x6 Weaver.
S&W 686 6"

If things ever got sticky and I needed to minimize I could cut back to these three again without hesitation.

But since the world has changed so dramatically for the worse since Clinton's reign of ridiculousness, and I just can't work it out mentally with three anymore. I now consider an M14 as mandatory equipment as well. (Although a G-3, FAL, or AR-10 would all do).

Three may be the magic number, a charm, a crowd, and the standard configuration for a clover, but it just doesn't work when trying to cover things "ballistically" anymore.

Why...? Before Clinton I never imagined defending my interests against blue helmeted Jack-boots, or Black Op Clintonistas either. That's the BIG difference in my mind anyway with what I consider "enough".

Box fed .308 firepower has no substitute IMO, and I take my Freedom VERY seriously.

Best,
SM

Depends on the situation that limited me to three. Financial? Defense?

General social meltdown requiring aggressive escape to the wilderness? Besides a fast car and lots of gas, a 10/22 and a few bricks of ammo for clearing the way if necessary, and for varmint hunting later.

.12 ga shotgun, .30-06 deer/goat/cattle rifle.

Forget the pistol in that scenario, with the above items a pistol can be acquired later from a safe distance. ;)

General purpose "feel like I need three guns but I'm just rebuilding the savings account"?? Hmm. Same list, pick your favorite pistol on your next spare paycheck (I happen to like hi-cap .40's, I'd just upgrade mine.)

Or have we P.0.'d the government and Delta is after us? Give it up, you're a gonner no matter what you're packing.

My choices are:

1. Ruger P-97 .45ACP
2. Any SKS that is parkerized.
3. Ruger 10/22, with a couple of Butler Creek 25 rounders.

That's all I needs. Later.

DL,
You may be a gonner with Delta comming after you, but in that situation, I would say that an M1 Garand or an M1A would assure you that you would have plenty of company on your way to hell.

Delta guys may be tough, but they ain't 30-06, or 308 proof!

What I am trying to do now is to limit my firearms acquisitions to just a couple more [damn I keep on saying that].

Rather than have a huge stockpile of guns, I want to have a few that I am one with so this hypothetical is becomming more real to me.

I would like to get one of those Colt Sistema's or 1927's since it is the poor man's way to own a 1911, and they appear to be pretty decent with a new barrel and minor maintainance.

I want an M1 Carbine for the handy truck gun.

I'll keep the m1 Garand over everything else. It can do whatever I ask it to. Gotta love the Garand.

I'd sell my AR if I thought I could sneak it past my wife. She's kinda partial to the thing.
