If you could have one of each and only one

I'd carry what I use now, Glock-36 45acp CCO sized for the auto and belt carry. S&W 638 38spl for the revolver and pocket carry. Revolver for the belt would be any 3 inch barrel J-frame.

Glock 26 for its combination of concealability, capacity, ease of shooting, economy of ammo.

A S&W or Ruger .357 for as-needed use and the versatility of using 2 different cartridges.

I guess I am going for versatility as a primary selection criterium.

Only one of each, hmmm. Considering discontinued revolvers have problems with spare parts I would go with my 4" S&W 686-1. For a semi-auto My Colt Series 70 MK IV in 45ACP.
For end of the world ideas the same 686 and my Beretta 92F. For a rifle I would include either my AR-15 SP1 or my Winchester Model 70 in 270 Win. For a shotgun, that's easy a Remington 870.

Carry gun? Whew.... so not limiting my shooters ;) .... Have to be my .44Spec Bulldog for revolver for compactness and punch. Semi-auto... never have carried one nor need for one. If I had to have one, it would have to be a .45ACP bottom feeder though. So let's say a 1911 variation.

Primarily urban:
- M&P40C--just feels right. Lo cap for CC, hi cap for range, open carry and HD. Gives up very little to non-compact model. Runner up: Ruger SR40C for same reasons.
- S&W 65LS (Lady Smith) .357 - 3" K-goodness, what's more to say?

Primarily rural or wilderness:
- DW 1911 Guardian .45, or CBOB 10mm north of 40th parallel out west.
- Ruger New Vaquero .44 Sp Sheriff, or Super Blackhawk .44 Mag 4-5/8" if north of the 40th parallel. Rugged reliability and punch for most anything two or four legged. If the idea is both auto and revo, I'd think of a 4-5/8" Blackhawk .45/.45ACP convertible for partial ammo sharing with the 1911 45.

Since the OP is specifying sort of a minimalist approach I would have to pick a 5" Government Model, lightly customized to fit my shooting style and a 4" 625-3 S&W revolver. Re-loading and buying only one cartridge would keep things simple...and probably save a lot of money. (smile)

I already own and carry one of each. I like and shoot both equally well so it's a coin toss which one I have with me on any given day. I've had both of them a long time and couldn't part with either.

Revolver is a Ruger speed-six 2 3/4" .38spl.

Semi-auto is a S&W model 4006 .40cal.

To my knowledge both are years out of production so I don't know how difficult it would be to find spare parts. As of now the only thing I've changed on them are the grips. The Ruger wears a set of custom Badger walnut grips and the S&W has a Pachmeyr slip-on grip.

I'm with Skadoosh on this one, Ruger SP101 and Sig 226. A couple of amazing guns there, would not have any need for more.

Wants, however, would run rampant.

I'd keep my 4-inch 686+ for HD and carry my Springer XDm-9 ... that would mean I'd have to dispose of my 1911s, and that ain't gonna happen ...

Ruger SP101 357,S&W MP 40C.The RUGER sees more time lately .LOVE those REVOLVERS .Plain and simple and they go bang .

Sig 226 in 9mm. Have put about 4000 rounds through this guns and it shows no signs or wear or tear and I've never had a failure of any kind. Has fired every kind of ammo I could put my hands on including questionable reloads.

Ruger GP100 in .357, 5 inch model. I've had a chance to fire several of these guns in different lengths over the years including a 4in model my buddy swears has over 20,000 rounds through it. I have no reason to doubt him. I've put 1000 through it myself and it still feels tight and accurate. I Finally broke down and bought one for myself about a year ago and have put about 1000 rounds of .38 and maybe 500 rounds of .357 through it without any kind of hiccup. It's built like a tank.

Well there are plenty of guns that seem like they would be the most sounds choices in terms of capacity and power. I, however, would choose my two favorites, Sig 9mm and a S&W j-frame in .38spcl. Those are the two I shoot the best. Namely these...
