IDPA. Choice of gun?

I have one for each division except Stock Service Revolver...

CDP - Customized Springfield Armory Milspec (My first 1911 bought way before Loaded models were available)

ESP - CZ75B

SSP - Glock 19 or 23

I don't enter all three classes at each match. I generally choose which one I'll shoot depending on my mood at the time. :p

I've only shot one match so far, but I used a Springfield loaded model in CDP.

The most common guns that I saw at my local club were:

1. 1911s (Springfields, Kimbers, and 3 Les Baers) These were the most common.
2. Tons of Glocks (all sizes and calibers, the best shot there was using a G34 I think)
3. A couple of Sigs. (226)
4. A couple of CZs (75 and a 97)
5. One Ruger P95.

There was also a backup gun division:
1. Kahr
2. Makarov
3. Kel-tec
4. Mini Glocks

CDP: mainly a SA1911 5", with the best trigger on the planet (courtesy of Bob Brown, SD, CA). Sometimes use my Kimber Compact CDP.

ESP: used to use a 9mm Browning, but had to sell it =(

Correia is absolutely correct, here in Vegas, LOTS of glocks and 1911s. A smattering of SIGs, HKs. Some wheelguns.

I've got one or more for each division:

SSP = CZ-85 Combat and EAA Witness Long Slide (in DA mode)
ESP = CZ-85 Combat, Browning Hi-Power, and Star Firestar Plus
(The Star is my most frequently carried CCW)
CDP = Custom Norinco 1911A1 and EAA Witness Long Slide .45
(fired from cocked and locked.)
SSR = A very nice S&W Model 64 (3" barrel, bobbed hammer).

I've not really shot the M64 much in competition yet, and won't until I get some better speed loaders. Sweet gun, though.

I shoot'em all and I use them all. (And only get confused once in a while. <grin>)

I traded off my SSP Gluck 17, so I am only shooting ESP and CDP as of now.

CDP is a custom Kimber CST
ESP is a Caspian single stack in .40 S&W.

I find it interesting that so many of you have a specific gun (or guns) for IDPA competition. The whole point of IDPA, at least according to their propaganda, was a form of competition for "carry guns", not competition guns. Apparently they have failed, just like IPSC, and it has turned into a game.

For what its worth, when I was participating in IDPA (I helped start it at a local club) I shot the gun I carried every day. At first a LW Commander, then later a Glock 22 and finally a G30.

Glocks, Glocks, and more Glocks of all shapes and calibers for SSP and ESP. I told someone at the last match that we look like the GSSF having a match, not a local IDPA club. CDP seems to almost exclusively be Kimber.

I personally shoot a Steyr M 40 and love it. If your looking for a gun for IDPA, I personally feel that guns like Glocks have the advantage in ESP and SSP. Just aim and squeeze, no safties or anything extra to slow you down.

Guns for IDPA

I use two guns for IDPA depending on my mood.

1- Wilson Combat CQB
2- Clark Custom Kimber Classic Stainless:D

ESP: An "Almost Stock" BHP. I painted the sights, got rid of the %$@! magazine disconnect, and added Spegel grips. That's it. (Note to Dave T: This is my usual carry gun.)

CDP: Les Baer Premier II

SSP: Glock 17

SSR: Don't have anything for this. All my revolvers - including my "house" or occasional carry guns - either are snubbies, have barrels which are too long, or have "illegal" modifications.

Like Dave T said, I thought it was all geared to carry. I just started and use my SIG 225, which is also my carry pistol.

Why get used to something that you won't use when TSHTF?

Shoot what you carry?

But I do. I carry a full size 1911, and I compete with full size 1911's. All have steel frames and all are single stacks. I just happen to like 1911's and see no reason to own and shoot just one.

I agree with some of what Dave T is saying. I have been shooting IDPA for about a year now and have just been elected VP of my club. I feel like the Glock 34 and 35's (just an example, not picking on Glock) and some of the other large guns are really pushing it as far as carry guns go. Also every match I've ever been in, no matter the club, always becomes a game with less concentration on real world scenarios. Maybe its impossible for us to have a realistic shooting sport. I guess the bottom line is that we are all going to be familiar with our weapons and the techniques used if we ever need to defend ourselves.

I was carrying a Kahr P 40, but shoot the Stery M 40, because IDPA Cof's are all based on 10 rounds ( except a few, very few revolver friendly scenarios).

SSP- Glock 17 (usually), Sig 220 (now & then)
CDP- Kimber Classic Custom or Colt Series 70 Govt. Model

I think a lot of carry guns do get used in IDPA and a lot of the bigger pistols are some folks regular house and/or car guns. There's also those that carry a certain pistol and use a very similar setup for IDPA. I don't like cleaning a pistol after every match and I don't want to carry a really dirty pistol. And yes, there are a few strictly gamers.

Bullitt,
If you can find a copy of the original IDPA proposal (rules) it was all supposed to be revolver friendly. Also, there was supposed to be a limit on how far targets could be (something like 15 yards) and no stage was to have more than 10 yards movement - to get away from the IPSC style assault courses. Does any of that sound like what IDPA has turned into?

I can't speak for the rest of the folks, but all three of the pistols I shoot in IDPA *are* guns that I routinely carry. With the exception of the Springfield that has been customised (with carry enhancements I might add), both the CZ and the Glock are exactly what you would find coming straight out of the box at the store with no modifications that one would consider it "gaming." In fact the holsters I use are IWB holsters that I also routinely carry these weapons in.

For all intent and purposes IDPA *IS* a game whether one wants to admit it or not. However it is geared towards more practical weapons one would find someone using for self protection and concealed carry. So if you think because I like competing in the different categories and just so happen to have three different pistols that fit those categories that I'm gaming.. then so be it... I think you'll find It's impossible to find one weapon that will fit all three although the CZ *could* be shot in both SSP and ESP. Has IDPA gone the way of the equipment race in IPSC.. I respectfuly think not, at least not in the local matches I've shot in... YMMV
