Today I was talking with some other students in my British Lit class (High School)about getting organized to protest the MMM and about gun rights in general. I over heard a girl in the row next to me saying in a snide tone to someone else "He's going to be a future serial killer". I was somewhat shocked at first so I waited about 5 minutes to formulate a response. Here's what I said:
"While you may find it funny to call me a 'future serial' killer, I don't find it funny at all. In fact I find it offensive. I don't apreciate being stereotyped."
This sort of caught her off gaurd. She was like "It was only an off hand comment, I'm sorry YOU feel offended". It was obvious she was not sincere what she really meant was 'You Psycho, how dare you confront me about my attempt to belittle and degrade you'
I then said to her, "Why do you think an otherwise sane person can be caused to go insane by merely possessing an inanimate object?". She stutterred off some response about how she isn't against guns, blah blah blah. I dropped the conversation
Did I do the right thing by confronting her about calling me a "future serial killer" or should I have just let it go? Did I reinforce her opinion of gun owners by confronting her? Did others around her see, that it isn't right to degrade someone because of their political beliefs? I don't know either way it would still bother me.
What would you have done?
