I was called a "future serial Killer" today

Today I was talking with some other students in my British Lit class (High School)about getting organized to protest the MMM and about gun rights in general. I over heard a girl in the row next to me saying in a snide tone to someone else "He's going to be a future serial killer". I was somewhat shocked at first so I waited about 5 minutes to formulate a response. Here's what I said:

"While you may find it funny to call me a 'future serial' killer, I don't find it funny at all. In fact I find it offensive. I don't apreciate being stereotyped."

This sort of caught her off gaurd. She was like "It was only an off hand comment, I'm sorry YOU feel offended". It was obvious she was not sincere what she really meant was 'You Psycho, how dare you confront me about my attempt to belittle and degrade you'

I then said to her, "Why do you think an otherwise sane person can be caused to go insane by merely possessing an inanimate object?". She stutterred off some response about how she isn't against guns, blah blah blah. I dropped the conversation

Did I do the right thing by confronting her about calling me a "future serial killer" or should I have just let it go? Did I reinforce her opinion of gun owners by confronting her? Did others around her see, that it isn't right to degrade someone because of their political beliefs? I don't know either way it would still bother me.

What would you have done?

Russel, she's an idiot. In my opinion you acted responsibly. Some people are just morons that way. I was in the university computer lab one day, killing time, looking at guns on the internet, this guy sitting at the station next to me, looks at my screen and says, "Man, you must have issues." I was enraged, and managed to ignore him, and not choke him into unconsciouness. I couldn't think of anything smart to say because I would have blown my top. So all things considered you did pretty good.

You did fine. In our current society, had you let it go, there would be a germ of impression in others that she was correct; you would be branded forthwith.

You have experienced an example of PC tyranny...it's OK to libel and besmirch you for "incorrect" thought, even when the speaker is completely and hopelessly ignorant and stupid. She is "alpha herd" mentality. Given a situation where a comment would be germane...suppose you had referred to her as a slut or whore? You'd be a pariah.

For what its worth, you were easier on her than I would be, and I am female

Russell,

You handled it perfectly. High school, huh? I know 40 year olds that could not have handled it that cool and reasonably.

Personally, I would have been tempted to add that possessing a gun is no more likely to make me a serial killer than her possessing a vagina will make her a hooker. But with the climate today, that would probably get you kicked out of school for sexual harrassment!

Outstanding.

A polite, sincere correction coupled with a request for retraction or apology is the last thing someone with this mindset expects. Given that their arguments are based on fluff and that their beliefs have never stood up to (or even been exposed to) self-examination, I believe that this is the best response.

An emotional and hot-headed retort just allows the name calling to begin in earnest, while a level-headed appeal to 'be nice' triggers something almost pavlovian in this type of individual...

Had something similar happen to me once... I called the woman a "potential prostitute."

She didn't like that one bit, but after she calmed down, she got my drift, and we actually had a decent conversation.

I got that idea from that possible Urban Legend story about the reporter and the scout master.

Russell, I concur with the responses above ... you were fantastic.

The woman is a 'gun bigot'. Check out the definition of 'bigot' in a dictionary - it fits this situation to a 'T'. People like that are intolerant of your philosophy of self defense, self reliance, and liberty. It is not only appropriate to call this attitude to their attention, but it is imperative that we do so. These folks must be confronted with their own bigotry, and you did it in a very diplomatic way, IMHO.

One other point. For a long time I became discouraged re: the RKBA, but recently I've begun to take heart. I've always believed we win the intellectual argument, but I feared that would not save the day. However, more recently I've begun to feel that the contest is so lop-sided that more people are beginning to notice the absurdities of the anti-self defense movement.

In sum, I think it is possible that soon people will realize that they literally look ignorant and foolish by believing the anti-self defense propaganda (not to mention the mainstream media). I think it is possible that it will begin to look 'intellectual' and 'cool' to support the RKBA ... almost to the point that it will seem obvious to people.

Now, I recognize we're a ways off from that utopia, but I think it is possible. We'll see. A 'liberal' friend (who also fervently supports the RKBA) agreed with me the other day - from his perspective, it meant quite a bit when Yale hired and gave tenure to Dr. John Lott. Yale is not commonly known as a bastion of conservative thought. ;)

Russell, keep it up. People like you, on a national scale, and in countless conversations are going to win this war. The Bill of Rights may have a lot more life in it ...

Thank you. And, regards from AZ

Russell, way to go. You kept your head better than I would have - and I'm over 40. I would have used the 'potential hooker' line on her myself.

Maybe a in second conversation, if she is more prone to converse and not argue, you could invite her to the range to 'cook' a few.

Russell, good job.

Correia, your situation just brought my mind around to this response:
"There's no need to share your evaluations with me. For instance, I just decided you must be an idiot but you don't hear me pointing it out to you."

I would have said "Well - your a big fat stupid head!" and then thrown a spitwad on her...

Okay - after swallowing the desire to choke her out - Educating her about slanderous remarks would be in order.
You did good... Much better than I would have done I think.

Excellent response Russell. may times sheeple like that make offhanded comments and wait to see if others "jump on the bandwagon" to support their position. Nobody did here - and - you made a vary logical and intelligent counterpoint.

You may have even gotten her to *think*.

I over heard a girl in the row next to me saying in a snide tone to someone else "He's going to be a future serial killer".

You responded well.

Alternate response: "She's going to be a future prostitute."

Alternate, Alternate response : Hmm, you're absolutely correct, can I have your address for my records, should be starting next week ? Just kidding.

You did an excellent job. I think it is ALWAYS better to confront them, otherwise they'll be more confident and likely to repeat the action. This way they'll think about it next time & hopefully at least seem like they have some sort of decency - well, probably not but at least they may shut-up.

When talkin to someone, say that research shows that privately owned firearms prevent about 12 rapes a day or 4500 a year.

Do you prefer they happen?

Lott figures.

Great response! Maybe you should also let her in on the fact that most serial killers don't kill with guns. This reminds me of this song by my buddies band:

Chicago style murder
Something smells on SUmmerdale the windy city town
There was an evil madman they called the killer clown
Lurking in the shopping malls he hunted little boys
raping and killing them his sick perverted joys
No one knew what was going on inside his head
when it was over 33 lay dead....John Wayne Gacy
Late one night in 66 down on 99th another psycho showed his face weilding a knife
he snuck into the nurses dorm this man set out to kill little did this crazy know how much more blood he'd spill slashing, stabbing , strangling he made 8 nurses pay unluckily for this murder 1 he got away...Richard Speck
Then there was that night that would go down in history seven of Morans gang would die in '33 killers dressed as cops lined them up against the wall machine gun fire blasting all of them would fall the man who had them killed was never put away but we all know who was in charge that bloody valentines day Al Capone. -Curmudgeon

Oops got a little carried away :D
