I was almost an "airline terrorist"

You guys should look into getting cobalt knives. My brother gets by the detector every time. He has a Boye Dendritic Cobalt Knife. The Talonite is supposed to be better, but it's considerably more expensive.

In 1992 my family & I were on our way back from six months in Norway.
(Dad had Fulbright)

Anyway, One of my norwegian friends gave me a present before I left.
A 4" long by 3" high replica of a Beretta M9, that was a butane lighter.

Well, being a smart sixteen year old I had decided to hide it in my checked luggage and not tell my folks, cause if they knew they would never let me take it.
(Which should have been a clue I guess.)
Anyway, I thought I had planned it out, positioned it for minimal profile, and put it next to other metal stuff to throw off the Xray or something.
I don't know. I was 16.

So, we made it to Copenhagen and were sitting in the terminal for our layover.

After awhile these two very serious looking guys come up to my Dad and say "You will come with us."
This was not up for debate.

I find out later (in a good scolding) that they took my Dad out to the tarmac, got into a van with two other guys, each with subguns, and the five of them drove out into the middle of the tarmac.
Then, when stopped, the first two guys asked/told my Dad to unlock the suitcase.
Which he did.
Then, one of the guys opened the bag while the others watched my Dad.
I don't know if they had him in their sights, but I would say that being held by four guys with guns is "being at gunpoint".

Anyway, once the case is open a guard went through it and found the lighter, apparently saying, 'oh this is a toy'.
They scolded my Dad for trying to hide it, he told them it was his kid's bag, and they told him to give me a good talking-to.
Believe me, I got an earful.

Guess what?
I still have that lighter!

Good thing you didn't greet your friend with a cheery "Hi, Jack!" and get the airport shut down for four hours like what happened near here.

God and soldiers, we adore
In times of danger, not before
With the danger safely righted
God is forgotten, and soldiers slighted
