I want to own just one more .22 rifle,,,

I though someone mentioned rim fire central. I wanted to quote and agree but I dont find it. They have a forum dedicated to military trainers. You can read back through years of posts and get much more than the smattering of info on any one thread such as this one here. This is very good, but not like reading 5 years of posts on this very subject.

take the MAS. I read a recent thread on rimfirecentral. Producted in 4 versions with various options and some greatly affect rarity & price. And major demerits for owner improvements.

Paid $500 for the MAS45 trainer -
Wasting time coming from the VA hospital in Palo Alto, Ca., I stopped at one of the local gun stores, wandered around & spotted a wax paper wrapped packaged on the floor. Asked what it was & the counter guy unwrapped it and said it had just come in from an estate sale. I knew what it was as I had seen another one "slightly" used before and had passed on the chance.
Owner still hadn't tagged it with a price yet so I had to get him to set a price & after checking out the blue book, we settled on the $500. Considering the condition & inclusion of the 6 mags, I probably would have given him another $100 for it.
Lucky and right time & place.

Ranger 101.21 (same as the Springfield 87M)

How about a Ranger 101.21 (same as the Springfield 87M)? I have the Springfield 87M with a 4X Scope. A real nice semi-auto. Military used it as a trainer for the M1. Mine has several thousand rounds through it and still shoots great. Nice rifling and heavy enough to keep the wobbles away. Deadly on squirrels and rabbits.

I hadn't heard of the Ranger,,,

I hadn't heard of the Ranger,,,
So I Googled it.

Nice looking rifle,,,
Thanks for mentioning it.

I should have said "another" instead of "just one more",,,

I should have said "another" instead of "just one more",,,
Because I know I'll buy whatever strikes my fancy at any given moment.

I'll keep amassing guns as long as I have disposable money,,,
After all it's just me and my two furry feline friends,,,
I'm able to purchase whatever pleases me. ;)

I do know that semi-auto 22's have no allure to me,,,
I own one very functional Mossberg 702,,,
And a very fun Beretta NEOS carbine.

That's all the semi's I need/want.

Give me a good old bolt-action any day of the week,,,
And if it's a single-shot that's even better.

A few of the trainers are single-shots,,,
They are the ones I am most attracted towards buying.

I just hope I have enough money,,,
In actuality, this could be my most expensive rifle.

Thanks for the link krimmie,,,

Those H&R trainers are fine shooters,,,
Several members of my club have them.

They were used by the military as a training rifle,,,
But they weren't based on an existing military rifle.

I'm looking for a rifle with a definite military appearance though,,,
After spending most of Sunday surfing and reading,,,
I've settled on three main candidates.

  • KKW German trainer.
Probably too expensive but it's the one that matches my 8mm K-98 the best
  • DSM-34 German trainer.
This one will probably cost me $5-800 but I can swing that. It is a close mate to my K-98 but not exact.
  • Polish WZ-48.
This one is my favorite for looks. For some reason it really appeals to my eye. But it would probably mean I need to search out a M44 mate for it. :o

    Again though,,,
Thanks for posting that link. :)

Matching Pairs Rimfire & Centerfire

You are straying!

Anschütz has nice rifles built on the 54 action, like the 1422 in .22 l.r. And the 1432 in either .22 Hornet or .222 Remington.

Uberti also made some nice 1866 lever actions in .22 l.r and in .38' Special.

What happened to your enthusiasm? Stay the course and continue collecting quality guns in pairs.

Anschütz also made a very high quality post war trainer.

Mauser MAS45A is probably what I would get if I could. The only problem with them is that sometimes you have to just tilt the rifle to get an empty out. They are fun to shoot and pretty accurate. I have one. Cost was $400 in 2009; at the time, I had no idea of pricing, I just bought it. They are in that $400-$550 price range generally these days.

Another couple that could be of interest.... Remington 513T or the CZ 452/453 Trainer.

There is a military version of the Mossberg 44.

I saw a couple for $250 about 5 years ago. I'd expect them to be closer to 400 now. As I remember they were solid guns that fit me well and pointed naturally.

I'm going to look at a WZ-48 next week,,,

I'm going to look at a WZ-48 next week,,,
A gentleman from another forum has offered one for sale.

He is local (45 miles) from me,,,
So I'm going to take a look at it real soon.

I haven't given up on a Mauser,,,
But the asking price on the WZ-48 is so low,,,
That I could buy it and not dip into the allotted Mauser fund.

I have had my 8mm K-98 since I was a kid,,,
My great uncle Banty brought it back from WW-II,,,
My grandfather gave the rifle to me when I turned 13 years.

I would love to have a KKW to match it,,,
But the price of those rifles has me looking at the DSM-34.

But like PzGren stated,,,

I must admit he made a good point,,,
I do have a tendency to act in haste on occasion.

If I got a DSM-34 because it is "close enough",,,
I would probably regret it forever.

If I get this WZ-48 it will calm my fervor to own a true military training rifle,,,
And it won't take a huge chunk out of what I have saved up.

That will give me the breathing room to continue saving with a KKW in mind.

I must stay calm! ;)

Thanks for the good advice my friend,,,
It did have an impact on my decision making process.
