When you go to make that final purchase, ask for a hunting rifle with a synthetic stock and a bipod. Do not ask for a sniper rifle.

When you go to make the final purchase, ask for a VARMINT rifle, "Hunting rifles" generally have sporter barrels. Varmint rifles have heavy barrels, designed specifically for precision shots on small game.

Do not worry about weather or not it has a synthetic stock or not... You'll surely be replacing it very soon after your purchase.

Buy your bipod online... they are half the price.

The 5.56 & 30 calibers are hard to beat for the huge range of cheap ammo, bullets, barrels, and thread on assessories (you said "tactical"). Your checkbook will appreciate these things.
I like U.S. Optics. Expensive, but a very fine company!

Code:
Remington 700 series

Yup. Get either the LTR or PSS(longer barrel)in .308. Spend a little extra and get some good glass(Leupold?)and get a trigger job. You'll be VERY happy, guaranteed.

Recomend?
Simply put, become a Sniper accurate shooter. Thengo get an XYZ rifle in PDQ caliber and make it work for you.

i've got a mosin nagant 91/30 and with the right scope it is a tack driver its about the same as a 30 cal and i tears through most metals under an inch thick and the ammo is dirt cheap :D

A "sniper accurate" rifle..? I have a CVA .45 cal Mountain Rifle, that I built at the age of 15, that would do nicely as a "sniper accurate rifle"...;) I guarantee moa.;)

I have a Remington 700 .308 custom built by a gentlemen named Jack Field. My 12 year old son put 5 of 6 shots through a cantaloupe at 450y with it this past 4th of July. My eyes are not as sharp as they use to be. As such the gun is far better than I am. I have however; been temped lately to try a new Savage to see if the out of box rep is for real.

SAKO TRG22 IN .308 or Accuracy International AE mk II ,or aw308 WITH A NIGHTFORCE SCOPE ,Fedral GM 175 smk or hand load . Now that you have well over $5000.00 of equptment you will need to learn how to shoot at 600 yards . ;)

Interesting thread. I've been looking long and hard at building a heavy .243, standard not improved, with a 1:8 twist for shooting 105 grain or heavier bullets. I'm getting just over 3100 fps with Reloder 22 but my standard barrel doesn't want to stabilize those long bullets.

The other posters are correct, if you want to shoot long distance, good mounts and glass will be just as important as the rifle. Don't skimp there or you'll be disappointed in the result.

If I wanted what you want, I'd go with a 700 action and find me a gunsmith that was a retired Marine armorer (with the proper high level experience) to build me an M40 clone. Then I'd put some really serious and expensive glass on it, following the advice of your buddy that's a scout sniper. And it'd be in 308 because of the huge amount of info available on long range shooting with that round. And I would most definitely load my own ammo for the rifle. As for an alternate approach that might even be more expensive, call Jarrett on the east coast and get them to build you one. Either way, it's gonna cost ya.

"And, we are talking about rifles."

But the OP might not be here any longer. He might even be dead and gone. Anyway, it's his thread, not yours.
