I think iron sights are becoming pointless.

iron sights

I don't see that iron sights will ever be obsolete. The dependability, independence of electrical power, ruggedness, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness are very hard to surpass.

I have only one rifle with optics and it is CZ 527 American, which has no iron sights. I love open sights and rarely use anything else. They are reliable and I don't shoot much beyond 200 yards anyway.

Sorry... Irons are never going to be pointless...:)

I have 5 Rifles, and one scope. The scope is on quick detach and only goes on the Bushy for testing ammo, and then the handle goes back on. Peep sights all around. I did learn on irons first but that was strictly a financial thing.:o

Good irons are better than cheap scopes.

Far from pointless or out dated. Scopes have a place for sure and I own a few. But I would still go for the iron sites if only 1 was allowed.

Irons come free with the rifle where as you have to be shelling out a lot of money for an EoTech, Aimpoint or ACOG scope.
Many people cant justify the huge price tag for them, if I were buying a new sight for a hunting rifle I wouldn't be spending in on a Red dot, they might be cool but they're not that practical for people on a budget

As far as the military goes, would a nuke or EMP during a conflict wipe out tons of this electronic gadgetry?

For clarification, the topic is about the evolution of the sighting systems used for combat of any kind
I'll state as clearly as possible I Wouldn't willingly go into any combat situation with a rifle that doesn't have a good set of iron sights on it. Sure I'd be ok with a ACOG or aimpoint my own personal M-forgery has a Bushnell holosight on it right in front of my BUIS.

My favorite feat of rifle marksmanship was when I fired my Winchester M-70 XTR in 308. Using the iron sights I put 3 rounds into a 1.25" group at 100 yards in fading light
Yes, there is no better feeling IMO than making that great shot with iron sights! :)

Irons come free with the rifle...

That might have been true decades ago but, sadly, not so much anymore (I'm referencing the typical bolt-action, hunting rifle here). Fortunately, most lever-action, semi-auto and pump-action rifles still come with "free" irons, factory installed.

Tell me I'm not the only guy with BOTH irons and a scope on my main hunting rifle....
Okay I will tell you that but you know it's a lie. One reason I like old iron, it depresses me to see a gun barrel without a front sight on it. Paid good money to have sights installed on two of them, two to go and then I am a happy camper again.

I wish more rifles came with a stock peep or ghost ring setup, depending on whether intended as general or brush guns. Never been a fan of rear buckhorns on a rifle.

But I do like having some kind of iron sights, if only as a backup.

I have no use or time for irons sights ON RIFLES but I also have a disdain for battery powered sighting devices. Give me a low powered scope (1.5-4x) for close in shooting and 3-9x TOPS for everything else I do. There is nothing that scopes aren't better for IN MY CASE.

Now if you were talking handguns than open irons is the way to go.

While I do have a reflex sight on my AR, I will always believe in irons, if only as a backup system. Iron sights don't fog over and don't run out of batteries. They might not be tacticool, but they will always have a place.
