I think I might have been shot -- but it's a flesh wound at most.

Here are some good links regarding tetnus:

Six months ago I received a tetanus booster (after 10 years) as part of my annual physical. On day two, my shoulder stiffened and remains painful and greatly immobilized since. Last month I developed a "pop" in my rotator cup in the same arm that is extremely painful. The doctors cannot explain it. My cat also died.

Noban,

Sorry to hear about your cat. That's rough. I'm very attached to my two dogs.

As for the tetnus booster, some inflamation is normal, but what you're describing sounds like one of two things:

1. Site specific reaction involving the tendons, muscles, and/or ligaments,

2. Who ever gave you the shot hit something not supposed to be it.

Has the doctor done an MRI to figure out what's what?

Mike...are you a medic? :)

You sound paranoid to an extent. That's not a bad thing...it's like me keeping my bugout bag in the car just going to work 30 mins from home. ;)

"The concept isn't one of running for a shot everytime you cut yourself. It's maintaining the proper protection within prescribed timeframes."

I'll second that! And rethinking it I would consider re-upping my Tets and Rabies innocs....everything I do is outside in strange places. FUD...go for the shots. Nothing to lose anyway. :)

I guess I have a strange thing about people getting all kinds of anti-biotics and shots for things the body can ward off with a little temp and crappy feelings for a week...makes the bugs stronger over time.

Tet I'm well aware ya need the help. Same with some other bugs...guess it's just the idea of a minor wound not really needing more than a cleaning, and band-aid. But like I said-I'm funny about it and tho I'm playing the Devil's Advocate I don't consider you wrong nor your advice lacking...and thanks for the links.

If you wanna see a REALLY gross image...got a pic of a guy who's handlebars split his face open to the sinus cavity. Can see a BUNCH of interesting anotomical parts normally hidden behind the skin. ;)

Now FUD don't get me wrong here cause you are a nice guy and I like your posts. But I hope I never meet you. You have to to be the MOST unlucky person on this board. I think we should compile all your posts together and put them in the FAQ :)

Let me add I think you should get a tetnus shot and I am glad it was not worse.

I took care of a guy yesterday who had the following as a diagnosis. "Spontanious Gas Gangrene" Lost a leg already, who knows what next. No injury or known cause.

Recently saw a picture of an exposed skull filled with a black fungus. Took two days to grow from the nasal sinus into the brain and kill the patient.

We get millions of various deadly bugs in our systems every day without getting sick, then one day...it's all over. Best you can do is take care of yourself and do the standard preventive health maintenance and hope for the best.

Kiffster
(Just thought I'd brighten your day :-)

PS Just as background I work in a general surgery/trauma unit at the Mayo Clinic. Yes, my wife hates it when I talk about work at home.

Easy, Mike, easy! I don't think we're going to lose FUD any time soon from a flesh wound. Heck, it happens all the time in the movies and they never run to the ER. :)

And the disease is called tetanus not tetnus. It is extremely rare to get it from an abrasion like FUD described. It usually takes a puncture wound in a less-oxygenated area. But, I do agree it may be a good idea to ask a doctor about it and get a pro opinion.

I would call your county health department. If they don't give them there they can refer you to someone that does, cheap!

Mal -- Well poopies! :) No wonder I wasn't getting a lot of hits on tetnus from Google! I just typed in Tetanus, and got one HELL of a lot of hits.

Interesting thing of it is, though, that some of the sites that I got hits on with Tetnus are MEDICAL sites....

While tetAnus :) infections are most commonly associated with puncture wounds (or deep cuts), it CAN be caused by any break in the skin, even a simple scratch. As I noted, all that is needed is a simple avenue of entry.

Kiffster -- "black fungus." Valley Fever, by chance? Was the guy from the Southwest, or had he been in the Southwest? Middle-aged white male? AIDS patient?

What drugs were you using to treat him? Diflucan, flucytosine, amphotericin B?

S -- "Are you a medic?" Used to be. Also come from a family of health-care professionals.

I've seen some pretty gruesome things over the years, including:

a severe bull goring, crushing, and stomping (never get in a bull pen when the cows are in heat, the farmer should have known better, but paid with his life)

an electrician who decided to commit suicide by crossing himself over an industrial voltage line (2000 volts, God knows how many amps). I didn't eat hotdogs for a number of years after that.

a man whose wife decided that she had had enough, and shot him from about 3 feet away with a .30-06. I was fine until I found out that the family dog had been licking up the blood when the police arrived. Exit breakfast at roughly the speed of light.

routine tetanus booster recommendation is 0.5 ml every 10 years, or a single booster dose at age 50

if there is an associated injury,
and the last tetanus shot date is unknown they will give you another tetanus shot.

if there is an associated injury, and you have had at least 3 tetanus shots in the past,
no shot will be given if it is a
a) clean, minor wound, with the last tetanus shot being within the last 10 years, or
b) dirty wound, with the last shot being within the last 5 years.

reference - the washington manual of medical therapeutics, 29th edition

note - most children now regularly have 3 DTP immunizations within the first year of their life.

I think that most places will give you a tetanus shot anyway, if you haven't had one within 5 years just because it is a relatively cheap shot.

consult your own doctor for further advice...

oops, didn't catch your "don't have a doctor" note. you could probably look in the phone book and look for a "urgent care" facility or see if the local hospital has something like a "fast track" or "urgent care" department for something like this - something that is cheap, and an in and out type of office visit. call around and see ...

Mike talking about grusome pictures, I saw one many years ago that still haunts me a little even now. My neighbor was a Police Captain and had a stack of pictures he was using to try to identify the victims of a plane crash. They were taken on the plane of the crash victims still in their seats or in whatever position they were found. The one that got me was of a man who had apparently been crushed between two soft seats. His head was completely flat and the odd thing was that there was no external bleeding at all so he looked like he should be alive until you saw the side shot. It was extremely odd looking and as I said it was very haunting. It was like in the cartoons when someone gets run over with a roller - only he didn't poof back up and no one was laughing. I made up my mind right there to never apply for a position as a police photographer.
