I shot a 1911 today

I love mine-Point and shoot. Very accurate little sun a gun. Never have found the urge to buy anything else in Pistol anyhow. Now If I could just do that with rifles

That's a great first 1911, Lee. A basic blue GM. In fact almost 40 years ago I bought a blue Colt Series '70 Government Model that I still have and love today. I carried it all over the Arizona desert and it's as good today as ever, except for the "character" the blue finish has acquired over the decades.

I second the recommendation of the Remington R1 which would be in your price range. A Colt would be $200-300 more but you won't be sorry. I love the way the R1 feels in my hand and made mods to my old Colt to replicate it (went with a Remington flat mainspring housing to go with the short trigger, which fits me perfectly).

Price isn't necessarily an important point for me, especially for a 1911. I'd rather save just a little more and get something really nice then buy a cheaper one and wish I had the best later on. Though I suppose I'll end up with multiples anyways, haha.

Is there any major difference between the Remington R1 and the Colt Government Model?

Lee6113: Check Bud's for Colt prices before you do anything else.
I've been looking at gunbroker, I find it's user interface is a lot easier to use. I may pop into a local store to see what models they have as well.

Bud's website is very user friendly. When you are on the sight, click handguns, then Colt and the whole list comes up. You can't beat their prices on new Colts.

Here's the link: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php

Prices on Gunbroker tend to be high, plus you have to pay shipping. Bud's usually ships free.
