I never go to the bank.....

...since I have direct deposit and rarely have to do anything inside the bank (thank goodness - see mall thread) - but had to yesterday, and hated it. It is in a part of town that has all walks of life and maybe only 60% of the people speak english, and I don't think the tellers speak anything but english.

So anyway, people were loud, annoying, not being polite while in line, etc. You know, usual bs that comes with being in public.

So I decided that although the line outside for the drive up was long, I would take that option instead - and I have XM Radio, so I can keep myself busy.

To the point: I didn't see a "No Guns Allowed" sign as required by the MN Statue on Carry Permits. (I stopped on my way out and looked dilligently) Maybe I missed the part about not carrying in banks while I was reading through the law books recently, but does anyone else have any experiences while in the bank?

/NOTE: I was NOT carrying at the time.

Maybe it is a no brainer - but a good conversation piece anyway.

If I were you, I would definitely contact the local law enforcement to find out for sure if it is legal to carry concealed in a financial institution. I know that in my state, it is definitely against the law, and would imagine that in MN, a state that is much tighter on the subject of concealed carry, that it is also illegal. Definitely don't recommend trying it until you find out for sure.

The Bank

For depositing, try direct deposit from your employer, other issues offer no relief. It is doubtful the sweaty multitudes, shoving and pushing in lines to the teller are a threat to your wellbeing. If the meaningless jabber in a foreign language fray your nerves, learn some off color phrases in that language, like "caca" and the like.

You probably packed iron before it was legal like some of the rest of us so if it makes you feel good and in "balance"
and as long as it doesn't print, what the hell?

I don't believe that its illegal in my home state (Indiana) but I still leave my gun in the car when going to the bank. I just have a feeling that should my gun be noticed (heaven forbid) people would get more excited being in a bank. Note: open carry is also legal where I live although discouraged I'd never try that in a bank.

I go into the bank maybe a couple times a month to get quarters for laundry. I don't think twice about carrying there, then again I don't think twice about carrying into the post office, either. A bank itself is a juicy target for armed criminals, but even more so, bank customers also make tempting victims because many lowlifes might assume somebody walking out of the bank has money. I don't see the point of leaving my gun behind when I'm going into an area with a higher potential threat of armed confrontation than most places.

FYI: it is a Felony Federal Offense to carry into a Post Office and most if not all Federal Buildings....rotton way to get your CCW yanked :(

I live in MN. I've seen no mention of banking institutions in the law. Haven't thought twice about it. Although it's not required that it's concealed in MN, if it is... no one knows.

I carry going to the bank all the time I hope there is no law against it,there is nothing posted to say otherwise. :) But then this bank gets robbed about 4 times a year :(

In Minnesota, there are no restriction concerning banks.
Even if there were the maximum possible fine is $25.00. so why worry about it.
And thats only if you refuse to leave or disarm.
They cannot repeal your permit for a first offence anyway.

SULACO2-there is NO federal law prohibiting concealed carry in a Post Office.Next time you are in one, read the sign CAREFULLY.Then go see if the Postmaster will show you "Subsection C".

KIRKCDL,

Enlighten me, what does subsection "C" state? I've been working under the assumption that ccw in the Post Office was a strict no-no.

Thanks.....

"C' states something like no carry unless you are an authorized person. The question is if you have a carry permit are you authorized ?

Hey! The only guns allowed in Post Offices are those carried in by their own employees. Of course, you wouldn't want to be there when one does.

I carry in Washington State EVERYWHERE but where Alcohol is Served (only the portion where under 21 is restricted is effected), Courts (try to stay out of them), Airport Secured Areas (Don't need to Fly anymore), and Schools. Don't go to Rock Concerts and avoid the Post Office like the plague. As someone earlier posted, don't worry unless you are carrying in the open or you don't have full concealment. Nobody is going to notice and if they do, they might mistake you for an "Authorized Person" (whatever that truly means).

Well,I'll try to be as verbatim as possible. The posted sign begins with"Except as authorized in Subsection C below".Subsection C states that the exceptions are:1)Military personnel required as part of their official duty. 2)Law enforcement personnel required as part of their official duty to carry.

Here's where it gets good.Part 3 states"All other persons conducting lawful business."

Which,as I,my Postmaster, and a "friend" of his that is a Postal Inspector interpret to mean, that as long as I'm legally carrying, and have no intent to commit any crime,it's perfectly okay to carry on the premises. As for myself,I'm an employee,so I am not allowed to possess any firearm on the property while in an official capacity. However, whenever I'm off duty and out of uniform,I have no problem. The employee " No Weapons" rule is a condition of employment,NOT a law.

That being said, some states specifically prohibit it,but that's a state law,not a federal law. Here in Oregon, about the only place I can't legally carry is a courtroom and the local VA Medical Center grounds, with the obvious exception of places of business with posted signs, and posted private property.I won't go to any of those places, anyway,so that really doesn't matter to me.There's a couple of really good posts on GunZone and Google.rec.guns on this subject,if you can find it...

Sorry, haven't checked back in on this thread until now, but I see the subsection C exception has already been thoroughly covered. ;)

Walking into a bank is one place where I would WANT to be sure to be carrying.

Of course here in my home state (Kalif) I am LE so I can get away with it.

Personally, I would be rather happy if a robbery went down and I was able to quickly communicate with another customer who had a CCW that we are both armed and might need to do something if the option presents itself.

We must remember to be smarter than the sign.
Go ahead and push the envelope, but I think you will find that CASE LAW is NOT in YOUR favor.

I just plain don't go to post offices.
