Pilot... I've seen reliability testing of the VP9 worse than the MAC tests (minus the throwing of the pistol at steel plates) where it passed with no issues.

So, on the whole, its probably fine... and in a house, there are not likely to be any mud puddles.

FWIW, Several women in my extended family, who could have had any kind of gun they wanted, chose little S&W J-Frame .38 Specials. Within my humble experience, guys tend to buy their wife/girlfriend,etc. guns that the guy would like to have. As an example, one guy I know bought his wife one of those Taurus/Rossi Cicuit Judge type revolving shotgun/rifle things in 45 Colt/.410. Of course, she had no interest in learning to shoot this thing or using it for HD,etc. Again WMHE, unless a woman is a real serious shooter, most do not like having to monkey with auto pistol slides, magazines, chambers that may or may not be loaded, safeties, decockers, etc, etc........ymmv

A double action revolver in .38 Special or .357 Mag is the best weapon for your wife. It is the most reliable and least complicated to load, shoot, and disarm when under stress. That is what I gave to my wife.

Why get a small j frame for a house gun?

If going revolver, something with a larger frame and a 3-4in barrel would be better for a home gun. It's better for practice on the range too, as the extra weight will result in lower felt recoil.

To make a long story short, my wife is having some major health issues, so my buying and trading days could be postponed for a while. I have been working a lot of overtime recently to pay Dr bills, so I want a good reliable firearm to keep at home for my wife while I'm at work. After doing some research, the Walther PPQ and H&K VP9 are at the top of my list. I have read positive reviews on both and they are close to the same price. The PPQ is $589, and the VP9 is $629. Which one would you choose? Other suggestions are welcome. Please vote in the poll.

So, a budget in the low $600s for a house gun, for a user with "some experience". So many many possibilities.

Just buy a Glock 19, or an XD. Fill out what's left with some extra magazines and ammo.

Or, as others have suggested, a decent .38 or .357 revolver.

All this might change, depending on if her health problem(s) affect her ability to handle the gun.

IMHO, there's no particular need to look for a "woman's gun", just something she can operate.

Me! I'm into Glocks..... not your thing ! Tryout the Sig P320. I have shot the Carry and Full Size and prefer it over the VP9 and PPQ M2 based on it's trigger.

My wife personally doesn't like any polymer guns except for her SR22, mostly due to recoil. She does love and shoots well my Hi-Power due to the weight and low recoil. I gave my mother (who's 61) my Ruger Sp101, she shoots it accurately.

Maybe look at the CZ-75 or as others suggested a nice used smith and wesson k frame. Lower recoil means faster follow up shots.

I agree, hard to go wrong with a Model 10 heavy barrel. I was issued one years ago. Simple to operate and always worked. And if one decides to have a trigger job done, the K-frame S&W .38 Spcl. can be reliable with lighter mainspring, etc.

I voted for the PPQ. I have the M1 (classic) and it is smooth and has been flawless with both factory loads and hand loads. When considering a handgun for myself, I was also down to the PPQ and VP9. The tiebreaker for me was where I had a problem where shooting the VP9 would cause pain in my trigger finger. You should be SURE your wife does NOT have the same problem. A very few of us have a problem with the VP9 where when fired it causes pain on the trigger finger where it touches the trigger. From what I can tell, most shooters do not have that problem. BE SURE YOU CHECK THAT OUT. Try before you buy!

Out of the choices listed I would think the HK. With the back strap and side panel adjustments she should be able to get a combo that fits. If you do consider a revolver maybe have her try the 3 inch version of the Ruger LCR. My wife who is 5' 2" and 110 lbs likes it a lot. Hope she finds something she is comfortable with.
