I Need A New Solvent

KyJim -

Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for the response.

You are absolutely correct that I stated that I was concerned about odor. The Hoppe's #9 would follow me around for hours in my clothing.

I started paying attention years ago, however, to all the man-made chemicals my family is exposed to. One of the simple tests for a household's toxicity is to inventory the cleaning supplies under one's sink. The released chemicals in the cleaning products float about in the air inside (especially in winter), and we don't want our 3 + year old son and our 2 beloved doggies breathing the stuff. Our terrier can locate tiny 6 month old rotting deer carcass parts under 6 inches of snow; imagine how a powerful cleaning agent would register on his olfactory sense!

I could not overlook the perfectunion reviewer's comment on the toxicity of the products. I understand that there will be times when stronger chemicals will be necessary, but I try to minimize my exposure whenever possible.

Thanks again, and I enjoyed reading the reviews of the rust-prevention products.

Here are a couple that have not been mentioned.
1 Remington's 40x bore cleaner. Not much odor at all. It smells kinda like motor oil. Follow the directions and use a bit of Rem Oil with it. It comes in a bottle that is like a lighter fluid bottle. I keep it in my range bag. It makes it almost impossible to spill. (I thik more solovent has been spilled than ever used to clean guns:p).
2 would be Gun Slick Ultra Klens It works very well for removing carbon, and powder residue. Low odor with a pleasan scent. It is not toxic.
I recomend wearing vinyl food service gloves. They are cheap, and disposable. They will not degrade from oil and solovent like the latex ones do. Note that solovent on your bare skin will strip the oil and dry out your hands. Always wash your hands when you are done. After disposing of the gloves. Keep your cleaning chemical out of the reach of the young'uns just like all of the other stuff. Just becase it is non-toxic does not mean it will not make them sick. It just has less chance of being lethal if ingested.
I do use #9. I just use it at the range with my bore snake kit.(out door range).

I use the Hoppe's Elite which I am able to get locally in small 2oz spray bottles. No smell, very easy to use and convenient application.

It's also inexpensive.

m&p45 and AH.74 -

Thank you for the feedback I have a bottle of the 40-X, but I was concerned about the warning regarding getting it in the "firing mechanism" (or something to that effect).

I'll give the Elite a try and report back.

Happy Thanksgiving -

Hoppe's No. 9 nostalgia

I've used a lot of cleaning products over the years but keep coming back to Hoppe's No. 9. Why? It just ain't a gun cleaning session without the smell of No. 9 in the air. As a bachelor I can get by with stuff like cleaning guns in the living room and I like the odor of Hoppe's.
Breakfree I've used for many years, it has little odor (can't speak to toxicity, haven't checked into it) but in the last few years have switched to Rem oil for general lube simply because the Break Free comes out of the nozzle thickish and sort of 'spizzles', making it irritating to get just a drop or so where you want it. My only gripe w/Rem oil for pistols is that it does not seem to last long - after every range trip the guns need another application.
To add a question to the thread, anyone use something they think markedly superior to Rem oil?

Weapon Shield, Wilson UltimaLube (oil), or FP-10. IME, any of these oils are FAR superior to Rem oil.

Been using RB 17 for years. Water soluble, non-toxic and smells like Pine-Sol.

Does an excellent job in removing old rust scale, dissolves lead fouling (turns it into a disgusting looking grey sludge) and also removes salts left over from corrosive ammo or black powder, due to its being water soluble.

We are traveling around the country in a small RV. My wife used to complain about the smell until I changed to MPro-7.

I wet a cloth with it and held it under her nose and asked how she liked the smell. "What smell?"

I've tried a few, but settled on Hoppe's Elite as well. Some of the scents and odors that linger with other brands is too much.

Hi, all -

Well, here's the report.

I just finished cleaning a few handguns using the Hoppe's Elite Gun Cleaner, and there was no noticeable trace of odor. I worked in the garage with the doors closed, and the experience was very unoffensive. I believe that I am now detecting the odor of the Rem-Oil more (since it is no longer overpowered by the #9).

I cleaned one brand new handgun and a few not new ones, and the Elite seemed to to a reasonable job. Not much is needed on a patch or a brush, since it seems to foam and expand a bit. (As stated earlier, it is the exact same product as the MPro-7 Gun Cleaner). My wife stated that my clothes had a very slight odor, but I believe that it may have been the Rem-Oil.

I also picked up a bottle of the Elite Gun Oil, so I may use that exclusively next time to see how that smells.

Anyway, thank you for your contributions, and I'll read the link on lubrication which was just posted.

I switched to Boretech Eliminator last year and like it better than anything else I have tried. No odor at all and does great at removing copper if used per the instructions.

I am fairly certain Hoppes Elite and Mpro7 is the same product - just marketed differently. I am a believer in the Mpro7 stuff. Works very well (not so great as a copper remover, but everything else). Doesn't smell at all - you can spray it on all parts of the gun without it messing up finishes or grips.

" "I bought a big bottle of shooter's choice bore cleaner. The fluid smells really really bad! I have to open the door and air out the room for almost an hour to get rid of the smell.""

Dont forget to take the saturated patches outside or the room will never air out!!

Gunzilla and -presto-no smell..

I had to laugh after reading the comments about Butch's Bore Shine. I was going to say the same thing but others beat me to it. Basically try that, and the Hoppes #9 will smell like the greatest air freshener ever made. There is a reason why the bottle comes encased inside another plastic container.

well now that no one can get hunter's extreme copper melt anymore (if you have some, name your price..) I use boretech eliminator... doesn't smell bad and is almost as good as coppermelt.

New gun cleaning oil?

I must be losing it because I find I really like this smell now....
Mix 50/50 Hoppes #9 and Kroil Oil and you will really like how it cleans every part of your gun. Been doing that for some time now and it works, believe me. Takes a little bit to get used to the smell, but it grows on you and after awhile it goes away. :)
