I Need A New Solvent

I need to find a different solvent for gun cleaning. I have been using #9 all my life, but I would like something with no odor. My wonderful wife has put up with me smelling like 2-stroke pre-mix, diesel, or Jet-A for a long time, and, although she never complains, I know that she would prefer a different scent.

Is there anything out there that will clean without an odor? A friend of mine said that his son in the military uses "Simple Green". The Remington bore cleaner (40-X?) has a caution not to let it come into contact with the firing mechanism, so that concerns me.

Thank you for the help.

Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner. It has an odor, but smells like Pine-Sol. Very pleasant. It's also more of a gel, so it's less messy.

Try MPro-7. I've used it for a couple years and have been quite satisfied with it. I use the gel on my bronze brushes and the solvent on patches. No odor that I've been able to detect and haven't had any complaints from my spouse (who does complain mildly about Hoppes.

Interesting - the "Blue Wonder" website claims that it removes rust, as well as cleans lead or copper, and that it is a good prep prior to using their bluing product. Non-toxic, also. Thank you, I'll look into it.

Hoppe's Elite

This is an excellent gun cleaner and solvent. It is odor free and non toxic. I get mine from Midway. I have been using it for several years without any problems.

Wow, I haven't heard about any of these. I guess that I've been stuck in a bit of a rut.

Hoppe's Elite has no odor -that's good. I might get a bottle to try.

Thank you.

I like G96 Gun Treatment for a spray penetrant/solvent. Someone described it as smelling "like bubble gum" and I guess it does, but not at all unpleasant.

Butch's Bore Shine. Butch's Bore Shine. Butch's Bore Shine.

Did I mention, Butch's Bore Shine, and Polymer Bristle/Brass Core Brushes??? But, You'd like something with no odor, so You wouldn't want Butch's Bore Shine.

That bad thing about Butch's, is it removes Copper Fouling... :D

No problem. I use it exclusively. I know everyone has their favorite brand, but when I was new to pistols (XD's specifically) everyone on XDTalk recommended Blue Wonder. I mean everyone. I tried it, and have used nothing but it since.

For solvent, I prefer Shooters Choice Bore Cleaner. For lube, I prefer Weapon Shield or Wilson UltimaLube. For rust prevention, I prefer RustePrufe.

Thank you - I'll put Butch's and Shooter's Choice on the list of possibles.

I will see if I can have a "sniff" of any of these at the local shops to check for odor.

Monty...let me ASSURE you that your wife will not like the Butche's Bore Shine. Its an excellent product but it makes Hoppes #9 smell like your favorite flower in comparison.

Thanks. Maligator. Good to know. No smell from now on for us.

JWT - does the Mpro7 cleaner come in both forms? On the website, bore-gel is referenced as the same as the cleaner, but I don't see gel in their product list.

Thank you,

Monty

The MPro-7 cleaner and gel are the same product. Difference is that the gel is thicker and stays on the brush better IMO. Gel is harder to find. I've ordered it from Midway when I can't find it locally. (I can always find the MPRo 7 solvent locally).
