i know this is weird ...

Not weird to me. The .40 is a great round but for me it's sits in the middle where I just don't need it. The 9mm is plenty effective, is cheap, and has great capacity. The .45 packs the bigger bang. For personal defense, target shooting, plinking, ect, the 9mm covers it all. If I want to add some more fun at the range, the .45 gives a powerful bang, blinding flash, etc ... good time fun! For me, .40 is almost as expensive as the .45 and not practically any more effective than a good 9mm. Some day I'll get one to round out the collection but for now it's 9mm and .45acp for me too.

Binary is a base of 2. Octal is a base of 8.
Although what this has to do with a .40 cal is beyond me....

Well isn't obvious? 8 goes into 40 5x :D

I have also been unable to fall in love with the .40S&W.

I haven't given up, however, as I belong to the school that holds that one should own at least one of everything (not necessarily all at once) :).

I've been with Glock, XD, and Star (which came closest, but no cigar).

I have a Sig on the way, so, I still have hope :D.

Best,

Will

I had a Glock 22 in .40 and got rid of it when I started reloading. I load lead, and lead + Glock's polygonal rifling + .40 being high pressure + me being new to reloading = don't bother, get something else. I sorta wish I still had it.

Octal and binary are related just as hex and binary are related. 2^3 = 8, so you can represent 3 bits with one octal digit. 2^4 = 16 so you can represent 4 bits with 1 hex digit. Observe:

1A (hex) = 32 (oct) = 26 (decimal) = 11010 (bin)

or, with extra 0's and spaces to highlight the point,

1 A = 0001 1010 (the 1 hex is 0001 bin and the A hex is 10 decimal or 1010 bin)
3 2 = 011 010 (the 3 oct is 011 bin and the 2 oct is 010 bin)

To me, .40 takes some of the 'fun' out of shooting. Thats more than half the reason I shoot, for fun, not just preparing for some hypothetical life and death defensive shooting scenario. The recoil impulse just isn't that fun to shoot compared to 9mm & .45. Different strokes.

I have been trying to fall in love with the .40 since I got a good deal on my p229 in .40 but I am thinking about selling it and picking up a 220 to cover the 45 base or another 229 but in 9mm.....I may try and get a 357 sig barrel to drop in to see how I like it, problem I would have is ammo availability around here for 357 sig is scarce.

I love my 229 for how it "feels" but after I shoot it back to back with other guns, I am not that pleased. It just doesn't work for me.

We all have opinions, and then there's the data.

Check out LE/FBI data on .40S&W with its proven track record of totally effective ballistics in the lab and in real life.

It's nearly as large as a .45, carries more velocity to the fight, and penetrates to ideal levels, and you can easily carry 13+1 rounds in a magazine.

What the hell is not to like?

What the hell is not to like?

It's an over pressured, over rated, inbetween caliber that serves no real purpose. There were plenty of calibers that could do the same thing or better before it came along. I'm not a fan either, sue me.

My Taurus .40 recoil isn't bad at all, once you get used to it. had better, had worse..all I know is, it's accurate, it's fun to shoot, and I can conceal it on my person adequately...that being said, On Dec. 9th, I'm gettin an HK USP compact .45 out of layaway, so, what do I know?

Not a .40 fan either...and I have really tried, and have owned 4 different .40S&W caliber handguns..the last one a SIG P229. I found for me the Glock 22 and the SIG 229 shot much better when the barrels were swapped to .357SIG.
I normally carry .45acp, and like 9mm just fine(and .357SIG, .38/spec.357 Mag, .44Mag, .45 Long Colt)

.40S&W just doesnt trip my trigger, and would never opt for it as a work caliber if given a choice.

Go with what works for you

I love my .40 but that could be because of the book "Boston's Gun Bible" The man clearly loves the .40 caliber, claiming it is the most "efficient" semi-auto pistol round out there. Now I am probably biased because of that and the fact that the first gun I bought was a SA XDM in .40.

But the .40 s&w is not for everyone. I hear that it's recoil is supposedly sharper than a .45 acp. I love the .45 also, but have never shot both side by side. That being said, I am also looking at buying a .45 for myself as well. Mostly to give that caliber a try as well.

When shooting a pistol, pick the one that works for YOU the best. If you don't like the gun or caliber, you are less likely to practice with it, and therefore, less likely to hit with it in a stressful situation. Like everyone says, "it's shot placement that counts". I'd rather hit the bad guy in the chest with a 9mm than miss him with a .45.

Never much cared for the .40. Always preferred the .45 or .357 Mag. Then after some time in the Navy warmed up to the 9mm.
I have owned a few .40s though, Glock 23,& 22, SIG P226, and a Taurus PT-101. I read somewhere that it is a "compromise cartridge"? Well I don't need to compromise anymore, I just use whatever hits my fancy that day.

I agree, JQP. For some, the .40 is "neither fish nor fowl". For others, the .40 is not too cold and not too hot. It's their porridge served "just right". It's an "in-between" cartridge that serves a very real purpose. I have all three under discussion (the "too cold" 9mm, the "too hot" .45 ACP and the "just right" .40) and like them all. But if I could only have one, well, what is there not to like about the .40?

Well I guess im not that weird after all. Haha. Thanks everyone for your comments.
Why did you think it was weird in the first place? I'm with you, I prefer my .45ACP guns and then the .38/.357 guns. For something a little different there .45LC and .44RemMag.

Forties?
We don't have any Forties.
We don't need no stinking Forties.

Love my .40s, love my 9mm, now that;s a sweet "shooten" gun, but I carry one of my two .40s everyday. Recoil ? as some of you have said "man up", to me it feels like you just shot some then rather than the feel of a small mouse gun.
