My best friend passed away last Thursday,,,
I've known her for eleven years and will miss her a lot.

We went shooting quite often,,,
One of the guns she always took was her S&W Model 34-1.

When she turned 10 her father took her to a gun store,,,
He let her pick out a pistol for herself as her birthday present,,,
She picked this one out for herself because, as she put it, "It was shiny".

Here it is with the holster I made for it a few years back.

RIP Jackie,,,

Funny you should mention that KMAX,,,

Keep it until you have someone special to pass it on to.

I was thinking that very same thing last night.
As soon as I obtain any new firearm I update my "give to" list,,,
My brother will be the executor of my will and I have list of who/where my guns go.

I have a very close friend with a 9 year old daughter,,,
She has a daisy BB gun I bought for her birthday 2 years ago.

Her father takes her to the back yard very often,,,
She has her Cub and he has his Red Ryder,,,
Quality time putting holes in paper plates.

He has asked me to take her plinking this summer,,,
I'm thinking this is the perfect handgun for her.

If she shows any interest and likes to shoot,,,
I'll leave this gun (along with a letter of providence) to her.

Right now it's just an idea,,,
But it might work out just as you suggested.

Great minds and all that,,, :)

Aarond, we know you well from your posts. You must be grieving heavily.

My thoughts are with you right now.

Thanks to all of you,,,

I appreciate all of your kind thoughts,,,
Thank you very much for them.

To keep this post gun related though,,,
I need some assistance finding some grips for the Model 34.

Here is a picture of the Model 34 alongside my Model 63,,,
34_63_SideBySide-lr.jpg

As you can see my square-butt 63 has oversized grips which I absolutely love,,,
They make the small J-frame very comfortable in my K-frame hands.

I would like to find some similar to this for the round-butt 34.

My Google-Fu is not strong today,,,
I've been searching all morning and haven't found any that compare.

Anyone out there have a line on what I'm looking for?

A 22 Kit Gun with a pinned barrel, and nickel? Oh my. I would be tempted to dress that up with these beautiful J conversions from Collins:
http://www.collinscraftgrips.com/pistol_grip.php?ID=503&grip=J+Conversion+Corian

I don't know of any other wood J conversions, but Collins could probably help you there.

Otherwise, just to beef up the grips, there are banana grips like Ahrends (052-000-079 at Brownell's) or Hogue 60300.

I'm sure I'd be honored to be the caretaker of that beauty.

Thanks for the links,,,

Thanks for the links good people,,,
Those Corian grips look like they would be the thing.

I don't think they are as large as the ones on my Model 63,,,
But they at least convert that small round butt to the larger square butt profile,,,
I have a square butt Model 34 that fits my hand well enough and those Corians are very pretty. :D

I'll give Mr. Collins a call and ask him,,,
They might be just the thing to dress up Little Sister.

Thanks again.

My sincere condolences on your loss.

I'll leave this gun (along with a letter of providence) to her.
Might I suggest something else?
Rather than leave it to her after your gone, how about giving it to her while you're still around to take her shooting with her "new gun".

She can have a lifetime of fond memories of both the present and, more important, the people behind the present.

Hello Hal,,,

Rather than leave it to her after your gone, how about giving it to her while you're still around to take her shooting with her "new gun".

Actually, that wouldn't be a bad idea,,,
Except for the fact that I want to enjoy owning and shooting it,,,
It was after all the very favorite handgun of my very favorite shooting buddy. :)

I'll not confirm the decision to give it to her yet,,,
She's only nine years old so there is still plenty of time for that,,,
I did however, go ahead and name the gun as hers in my "give to" list, just in case.

What you are saying makes sense though,,,
If I actually live long enough that shooting becomes difficult,,,
I will probably do just as you say and start giving my guns away before I go.

It would be fun to open my cabinet to a friend and say pick one. ;)

Like the scene in The Karate Kid where Mr. Myagi tells Daniel to "choose" one of the cars in the lot for his "number two birthday present." :D
