I just "have" to go there! .270/.308/30-06

There is no basis to the OP's original question. Each caliber has its unique characteristics that make it too close to call.

That's funny, as I thought there has been many great responses to the original question....it's been enjoyable to me at least to read the responses and I've appreciated the information.

It's actually been interesting to me, as I've always found the caliber comparison threads fun to read, they usually turn into "my pet caliber is ten times as good as yours" kind of thing-there really has been some great info provided by many knowledgeable people on this one (which is why I posted it in the 1st place, as I've seen so many of the .308 threads saying that very thing).

I like them all...all have thier uses, and it comes down to personal preference.

And my preference is the .308 for quantity.

The .308 is my goto gun because its so cheap to get trigger time. Trigger time makes you a better shooter and the repeatability of the .308 and ligher recoil gives you the confidence to go shoot anything...Then its off to the .338 LM or the .408 Cheytac.

I've been fond of the .270 ever since my brother let me shoot his Mark X Whitworth. At that particular time I was shooting a Rem. 700 30-06, which I usually shot very well, I loved the way his rifle shot with his handloads.
The only rifle or weapon I've shot closed to the .308 was the M-60, so I really have no dog in this fight but I have realy been fond of both the 3006 and the .270 win.:)

My opinion

Really, if I'm looking at versatility, the .30-06. The .270 is considerably less so, given the range of bullet weights. The .270 wins that contest as well, because the 150s have a much better sectional density. However, the weight range in the .270 is 110 or so up to 150, practically. The .30-06 is more like 110 to 220. The .270 is really my favorite of the 3 of those. I love the way it shoots.

I have loaded far more 100 grain bullets than any other weight, for my .270 WIN (prairie dogs are fun!) ..... even some 90 grain Speer TNT's ..... those things had a hollow point you could just about drop a BB into.........

They all shot well enough to kill prairie dogs ..... and the 130's, 140's and 150's all shot well too.

I understand that there are 175gr target bullets out there, as well as 160 gr RN ..... never needed either of them.

I never personally get tired of these sort of threads... I somehow manage to learn at least one new tidbit of info every time I browse one. Though sometimes they do devolve into a mess, yes.

I like the .270 personally. It works for me. I load my own, from 90gr up to 150gr. I'd feel confident taking anything from a varmint to an elk with my rifle.

On paper I think the .30-06 is probably the most versatile, and if I could afford more than one bolt gun, I'd happily consider adding a .30-06.
...or a .308, or a 7mm-08, or a .260, or a 7mm MAG, or.... you get the idea! :)
