I havent realized

I look at gun prices today and then think back to 1978 when I got out of the Navy and purchased my first home... for $450. Granted, it was a used trailer house, but it even came furnished at that price. Guns & trailers are way up, but for some reason my paycheck is even less today than it was then.

I manage the gun department of one store in a fifteen store chain in the northwest, and the only new guns I have in stock that would be under $300 would be the Sigma (w/factory rebate to get it under $300) or Taurus.

Well lets see, in the past 2 years I've found the following:

Security Six: $180
Beretta 96D: $240
Speed Six (Stainless): $340
Service Six (Stainless): $350
S&W 36-1: $300

All were perfectly functional and in good cosmetic shape, the Security Six had some ugly finish wear. In fact the 36-1 and Service Six was 99%. I think for around $300, I did pretty well. These were all retail prices too.

Look and ye shall find. I would not waste my breath on another Charter Arms or gamble on a Taurus.

You want a nice gun for $279?

How about $239?

They have them for $219 if you like blue.

"Retail" implies new from the manufacturer or distributor. After something is retailed, any further sale is... well... resale, i.e. used, NOT retail. Now I suppose it's remotely possible you found all of these NOS/NIB on a dealer's shelf somewhere, but quoting them as "perfectly functional and in good cosmetic shape... ugly finish wear... 99%" certainly indicates that they were 2nd hand/used.

Lets face it there are good deals out there but they are few and far between. Two years ago there were many good deals and fair prices that is not the case today. Most Ruger security and speed Six could be bought for about $200 I now see them $400 and up. Seen one last week in a gun shop $449. I bought a new 686 four years ago for $400 and a used 625 for $350 . I keep hoping prices will go down but not seen any sign of it so far. Or maybe the dealers are just reliving the last year or so when they could get any price they asked:confused: As long as people keep paying the price they ask nothing will go down:eek: Myself I have quit buy Handguns for now am back on another .22 rifle kick I can buy two three of four for the price of a new handgun.

If you are not in a rush, there are PLENTY of good deals out there in the used market.

CASH speaks volumes to many dealers. Find something you like, and make a cash in hand offer in your price range. The worst they can say is no.

There aren't ANY new guns, let alone decent used ones around for under $300. Used model 10 - $550.00, Rugers are over 450, and on and on. I see all these folks with these great deals - wonder where they are, because they are not in central FL

You can infer what you want but retail means, "sold by a retailer and purchased at a retail price". Why imply or infer when you can just pull out a dictionary? This is different from a dealer price or a wholesale price but does not explicitly mean new or used.

Yes, these were used guns. Only suckers buy new guns. And only suckers buy new cars too. The majority of guns never even get fired, making used guns a steal.

Rugers are over 450, and on and on.

MSRP on the blued P95 pistols is under $400 and no one should be paying MSRP on a pistol that's been on the market for 15 years. If you've got a store that is selling blued P95 pistols for "over $450" someone should give them a wakeup call...

Sorry John, but I was just in 2 LGS and one pawn shop. Around HERE, they're all over priced - at least compared to what you folks are reporting.....(I'm talking brick and mortar places)

I expect to see higher prices in a brick & mortar shop than online, but more than $50 over MSRP on a P95 is unreasonable, IMO.

That's unfortunate...

But you make a good point, one that's easy to forget. Gun prices do vary by region, sometimes by a considerable amount.

It all depends

Guys, come on, it all depends on what you want to use the gun for. I have a 9mm hi-point that works just fine. It's for FUN. I shoot it for FUN!!! It's a $150 worth of FUN. If I wanted concealed carry it wouldn't be my first choice due to size.

Live well, be safe

I hardly buy retail anymore. A Hi-Point at Gander Mountain will set you back $229+tax & a S&W Sigma sells for $399+tax. It's just as laughable at the smaller local shops.

Stick to Buds, J&G, or even Gunbroker & AuctionArms. Much larger selection, especially in the used category. You'll usually save between 10% to 15% even taking into account shipping and FFL transfer fees.

Aside from Hi-Point - Sigma, Ruger P95, EAA M88, & Taurus 85 are a few (new) in the $300 range.

I havent realized

I havent realized how expensive handguns are getting nowadays. Until today i went looking for a good inexpensive handgun for around $300. To my suprise there are none. They are all $300+ Stupid gun dealer said "if you want anything under $300 you better go with a Hi Point". Im like yeah and walked straight out the door. =-O

You can do much better if you buy used. A bargain not many people know about are Dan Wesson .357 Model 15-2. Being as few people know you can get a decent one for 350 or so. Look around your own area. It is a good idea to save some more money because cheap guns can be more trouble than they're worth. However a Ruger for that much money I would bet is a good gun.

there's still some goodies, at least not long ago

right before last Christmas, I went to a gun show and one vendor had new Ruger P-85's and EAA EZ9's for $319. Also an SR-9 for $369 that I sort of wish I'd bought. But I feel that way about lots of guns I see if money grew on trees.. I went with an EZ9 that i ended up giving as a Christmas gift because of the traditional DA/SA, all metal, and a slightly slimmer grip. I'll always be curious about the SR9 - but that tiny hinge in the trigger safety gave me the willies at first glance. Saw another table that had a Stoeger Cougar (spelling?) for the low 300's too. I would've gotten that but I literally couldn't remember which table it was at.:o

Well, I should mention that the price of the guns came along with 2 visits to gun shows for both my wife and I, so an additional 30 some bucks plus gas. And lots of fun :) And I couldn't resist an ammo box, bore brushes, cheap ammo, holster :D you know how it goes.

have not you heard the term you get what you pay for?
Nope. You always pay for what you get, but rarely get what you pay for.
Oh... and you can have your cake, and eat it too... you just can't eat your cake and have it, too. If you have it, you can eat it, but one you eat it... it's gone.
To the OP: Either change your price range, or learn to accept what falls in your current price range. Nobody around here is going to like that, but you didn't buy it for them now, did you?

You aren't looking far enough afield. Like I said, check out some of the deals at J&G. Plenty of S&W model 10s and 64s (among others) for under $300.00.

If this is the situation at your local shops, I would recomend finding listings on line of the same gun ins similar condition, new or used (probably easier with a new gun) and simply print out the listing on your computer.

Now, take the two or three copies of advertised prices with you to your local store, and ask if they can match the online price. Say something in a nice way like.. "I'm interested in (insert pistol here) and I'd really like to do business here locally with you, but I see these listed for much less on line. Can you work with me and maybe match, or get near these prices?"

If you have a listing for three of the same Ruger selling for $325 that local guy is asking $450 for, chances are good he'll at least think twice before letting you go spend your money somewhere else.

Easy solution....buy USED!
The majority of the best and coolest guns are not made anymore. I think I only bought 4 new guns in my life. Which equates to 10% of the time do I buy new and I may never buy new again.
