I have Glock fever, need advice

Hey everyone,
Well, I've tried to avoid it as best as I can, but after reading Chuck Taylors book on combat hanguns, I want a Glock! So here is my thinking at this point. I already own a Ruger P95 9mm (love it) a Ruger P94 .40 caliber (love it) and a little KelTec P32 (love it too!).
My biggest dilemma is choosing between a full size glock (i.e. the 19) or a baby Glock (the 26). The 9mm ammo is priced nice enough to shoot on a regular basis.

The 26 is the one I really like, and would suit me very well for my backpacking trips, etc. This is the one I'm pretty much going to go with (you know, after months of donating plasma, eating one meal every two days, etc)

Another factor I'm trying to take into consideration is that I plan on getting more training (formal) and I'd like to someday enter into shooting competitions.

So the big question is: Will I be able to 'grow into' the Glock 26? Is it too small to use in competition? Or will I be buying another Glock in 8 months (I know, I'm playing mental games with myself! 3 years ago, I swore to my wife that all I needed was one pistol!)

I know the 26 is a great pistol, but do people use it effectively in competition? For that matter, my Ruger P95 is super accurate, so I suppose I could use that. But I'd just like to, for the sake of arguement, tell myself that this Glock 26 will suit all of my needs at the moment, and in the future.

So whadda think?

You could use it in IDPA, but the 19 would be the better choice. Either way you will be buying another gun in eight months because once you have one of them you'll want the other.;)

Come over to the Dark Side, my son :) It really depends on what you want to do; if this is going to be a carry gun first and foremost, go with the 26. If you want to be able to use it as an all-around shooter and carry piece, go with the 19. If carry is a secondary consideration, I don't think you can go wrong with the full-size 17.

the G19 isn't the full-sized glock; it's the compact (mid-sized) model. IMHO the G19 is the best size of glocks b/c it's perfect for all conditions. It's small enough for concealed carry but large enough to work well in competition or as an LE sidearm. also, I don't see why size matters much for backpacking trips. All that said if you really want the G26 get it. You can use it in competition just you probably won't do as well as if you had a G19 or any other larger glock. there's a sub-compact class in GSSF that is perfect for the G26 and the G26 will also do ok in IDPA. I have a G19 and a G26 and like the G19 a lot more. however, i've had the G19 for around 2 years and just got the G26 recently so i haven't shot it nearly as much. the G19 is of course easier to shoot but the G16 is extreemly accurate for its size and recoil isn't really any more than the G19.

So what I'm hearing is that one Glock is never enough.

I can feel the pull of the dark side. Why should I even resist?

But don't you think that the 26 just looks friggin cool? I mean, it just looks killer!

Maybe I'll rent both and see what I should do after that.

next I'll be asking if a 26 or a 27 is what I want!

I was in the same dilema not to long ago except I was looking at the G23 or the G27 in .40. I ended up with the G23 b/c of the size and feel. Although the G23 is slightly bigger, its not to big to use as a carry piece yet is big enough to be able to shoot competitively. Over all, the G23 fit my hand better and did not require me to regrip it during shooting. The 27 I had to regrip several times due to the smaller size and hefty kick of the 40cal round.

My opinion would be to get the G19, its not much larger then the G26 and will be easier on the hands for competative shooting. Also, like someone said, if you use it for back packing, you can pretty much carry it however you want correct? If so, size shouldn't really be an issue there.

Whichever one you buy you will be forever satisfied with it. Probably one of the best pistols on the market. IMHO..

Good luck and happy shooting.

I went through the same thing a month ago!!!!!

I went with the G26 with Shearer Grip Extentions , which makes it very comfortable to shoot and a grip about the size of a 19, and a
1/2 inch shorter barrel.than the 19

Either one will be a great choice... which ever you choose you won't look back....... until you get the urge for another Glock

Also the ShearerExt. are slightly longer than Pearce Extentions

Get the G26. Many of us (over at Glock Talk) find the G26 more accurate than the 17 and 19. Any Glock is good, but the 26 is special. It is a pocket pistol that shoots like a full sized gun. Recoil is minimal, and quick follow up shots are very easy. The Glock 26 is what I compete at GSSF with, and I feel I can compete with anyone at my level of ability...even those who use larger Glocks! :)

I want to second what Russell92 said: I think the G19 is probably Glock's best offering as far as a do-anything sort of pistol. It's more easily concealed than a G17, and has a better capacity than the G26. (Yes, I know you can use G19 and even G17 or G18 mags in it, but it sort of defeats the purpose of the smaller grip.) I own one, and it's my concealed carry piece.

If the G26 works for you (which you have indicated is the case) and you like it better than the G19 (which you have sort of alluded to), then you ought to get the G26. As was mentioned, it's quite an accurate little pistol (and I've heard that from a LOT of folks who own them), so you're not going to give anything away in that department. It's a matter of giving up some capacity (though you have to cough up some pretty big $$ to get 15-round G19 mags these days) to gain some concealability. Your choice, but you're not gonna go wrong with either of them IMO.

Welcome to the "Dark Side"! :D

I have both. They shoot about the same. Believe it or not, the 26 might actually be more accurate in my hand but otherwise, recoil, concealability, and everything else is about the same. I still prefer the 19, however, simply because I like the fuller grip. You can't do wrong either way so I'd handle both at the shop and decide on comfort alone. If you're buying new, I'd buy asap though because I hear that Glocks are backordered in many places due to 'recent events'. I went to get *another* 19 today and couldn't...they dont have one, cant get one, and dont know when there will be some more!
:(

Both great guns, but the 26 is decidedly better for concealment. For what it's worth I've owned three compacts and one sub-compact Glock. The only one I still have is the sub, a 33. I carry it every day and love it.

Oh, and you're right - it's a MUCH more impressive-looking piece.

I have a G17 for fun. A G19 for everyday. But if you want to go smaller, consider a Kahr MK9 over a G26. Much thinner. The disadvantage is 4 fewer rounds, but the concealability of an MK9 is really an advantage.

All great pistols!

I prefer the 17 to the 19. The 19 is the only glock I have ever heard a fair number of complaints with on reliability. I am not sure if it is an earned reputation or not. But the 17 does not have this reputation. The 26 is also an excellent pistol. For matches just use finger extension mags and you will do fine.

Thats funny you mentioned that, because I have had the opposite experience. The ONLY Glock that has given me reliability problems is the G17. I had one that would malfunction an average of about 4 rounds per 100 shots. While this was not an excessive FTF ratio, it was enough to give me concerns about its reliability. I ended up selling it because I could never get it to feed at 100 percent no matter what ammo I used.

That is way too much in my oppinion. What load were you using and did you try different ammo. I will not keep a gun that has a malfunction that is not shooter induced or ammo induced. If the gun is at fault get rid of the gun or fix it.

Since when is a 19 full size? Unless concealed carry is an issue why not a 17? Small guns feel good in the hand or for waving around the living room during commercials but on an IDPA course the 17 or 34 will serve you better.

This is off the subject but.. Hey CZ, whats the deal with registering on Glock Talk? I've been banned ever since I discovered it. Once a month I submit a query and an e-mail as to why I'm banned but I never receive a response.

Oh, its sold. I also won't keep a gun that can't feed reliably. The main loads I used in my ex-G17 were Speer Lawman 115 grain, UMC Ball, Federal Hyrda-Shok 147 grain, Cor Bon +P 115 grain, and a few other brands. The ball ammo failed to feed as much as the HP's...go figure! It FTF'd with all the ammo I tried, and I wasn't happy with the lackluster accuracy anyway, so I sold it and spent the money to pick up a Glock 26. My Glock 26 has fed everything I put through it, so I don't regret getting rid of the G17. ;)
