I have finally been given...

Can't go wrong with a Hi-Power.

1500 rounds through a Glock is no big deal, and Glock will fix anything that goes wrong with it. I bought a used G34 and never worried about the used aspect of it.

I have only ever heard positive feedback on the CZ 75. And it goes 15K round before it shears a slide lock, that's really not that bad. Those guys make it sound like they're cracking their slide after a few boxes of ammo. It's 15,000 rounds...

The thing about racking the slide... that sounds like Condition 3 carry and yes - I think the idea has some glaring weaknesses but not because of the CZ slide. I think it's a dangerous practice on any carry weapon, Colt Goct Model 1911, CZ, or a Glock. Racking the slide to make your weapon ready is just a bad idea.

I wouldn't want to try learning how to shoot a pistol with a Glock as my first pistol though - even one with a trigger kit.

Translate please Mr. Pond

Only one word in Estonian that I heard a few times from my childhood Esti friends was "kurat." They usually said it after stubbing a toe or falling off a bicycle.

I know that word, it refers to a certain part of the male anatomy....somewhere below the waist. Let's just leave it at that and keep this a family friendly forum.

Beats me why they would say that word like you described

:D LOL!

Let's put it like this.

Make a mental note of the word you shout just after "YAOW!!", the next time you stub your toe.

Unless you are a bastion of propriety and only come out "oh bother", you'll have a very serviceable translation!!!

Vague, I know, but I've already had one post edited for mild vulgarity, so I'm trying to be good.

OK, ok. I'll tell you. It shows what a mild mannered, reserved lot the Estonians are:

Literally, it comes out as simply meaning "devil". Stub toe? "oh, devil", bike won't start? "why, you devily bike, you!!" Quite tame compared to some of the stuff Russian speakers come out with!!

Given your limited options, I would go with the Glock (if in good condition) and the Ruger GP100. Best of luck on your endeavors.

Don't own one, but I like it.

There is finally a 1500 round old G19 with a holster and two clips. It also has a lighter trigger, so I suspect it was an IPSC shooter... That is going for €450. A very practical choice, and great value but I hate to say it (as I know they are very capapble bits of kit) but it does not inspire me as much....

1.5k, not 15k? That's nothing for those gun's.

I'm a revolver guy (also some semi's), but for all practical reason's, that sounds ideal in your situation for now.

Go out and get that G19.

If you plan to carry or use the handgun for protection and you can't legally carry a semi with a round chambered, I'd get the revolver.

The revolver, its chamberd. Thats odd you cant carry a semi with one in the pipe.

Maybe its too dangerous... You need a heavy long DA pull of the revolver?:rolleyes:

May I ask where are you from? I always like to know other countries that allow their citizens the right to protect their life.

@9mm

I live in Estonia. I've actually just bought a second hand G19 that was too good a deal to miss. I still plan to buy a revolver: I like them. It'll doubtlessly be a GP100 4".

I agree that the law on semis is a bit daft. I can understand the legal worries about the likes of my G19: no safety, striker fire, but I do feel they could remove DA, hammer-fire semis from that prohibition umbrella: they would then be as safe as a revolver...

in a situation where you have to carry condition 3 without choice, a glock style pistol is probably best. Compared to a wonder-nine safety/deock setup or a DAO.

Might as well have no manual safety and a light(ish) trigger pull if youre gonna be condition 3 anyways.

If i was in that situation, i wouldnt buy anything for carry that WASNT striker fire, and im a USP v1 type of guy.

not saying what you should do, just thinking out loud. Its interesting how my entire set of preferences totally flip flops with just one condition, no pun intended.

@ SHNOMIDO

Well, I have to say that whenever I mull over the lack of an external safety I remind myself of that same thing: if there is no bullet in the chamber, it has nothing to fire!! Then I feel a bit better about that aspect. Ditto for the DA revolver comparison.

I just need to get training down at the range: c'mon registration document! Where are you?!

There's an old Russian joke about the Estonians:

An Estonian father and two sons are fishing. All of a sudden, a fish splashes in the water. An hour later, one of the sons says 'it was a big fish'. Another hour passes, then the 2nd son says 'it was a small fish'. Another hour passes. Then the father says 'Let's not argue, you hot-blooded Estonian lads!'

No wonder your permit took 6 months!

Congratulations. Is Estonia a very dangerous place? How's it compare to, say, Chicago?

Estonia became safer after the Soviet Union imploded and the Soviets left. Many of my childhood Estonian friends returned to Estonia to establish businesses and homes. Seems that the most popular business is American style hamburger joints.

Worked and lived in Kazakhstan for 3 years and Pond's experience in obtaining a firearm is similar to Kazakhstan's procedure - except no handguns in private hands in KZ.

I'd say that Estonia is safer than places like the other Baltic countries and also Russia, but more dicey than the Scandinavian countries.

It does have a relatively high crime rate by western standards and has quite a high murder rate per 100000. However, I've never felt under threat beyond the constant posturing that you get on Estonian roads: guys put way to much emphasis on their cars' ability to bolster their social standing: especially if you ride a bike: it gets really tedious really fast and is also often a catalyst for pointless road rage incidence: "You went a bit faster than me, so I'm going to cut you up at the next junction to restore the status quo...."

Apart from that, I've never had much grief other such road related and my bike can get me out of most trouble.

Chicago? No idea. Had a great cocktail in the Hancock tower bar, but that is about it as far as my Chicago experience goes.

My ..... where do you live ? California, New York, DC , Chicago, or New Jersey ?

We'ld have a revolt in this State if someone proposed we had to do all of that.

We had a Govenor that didn't like the idea of Conceal Carry... or guns in any way. Well, we managed to vote in a Legislature where 80% of them all voted for it, right over her veto.
