I have a Remington 700ADL Synthetic 7mm Mag Not Sure I Should Keep It

I bought it back in the late 90's for deer hunting. Somehow decided on the 7mm Mag. Looking back I wish I would have bought it in .308. I don't deer hunt as much anymore, maybe every two years for a few days. Along the way between late 90's and now bought a Remington 7400 Woodsmaster in .308 and like it much better for the type of hunting I do(when I do it).

Am I crazy about thinking of getting rid of it and maybe trading in on a AR platform(which I already have one). Or maybe another .308 in a bolt gun?

Not sure that I will ever use the 7mm mag again. Plus it kicks like a mule being that it is the synthetic 700. What good is a 7mm mag to me? Or should i just keep it since it is long paid for and I would regret getting rid of it? Probably wouldn't get much on trade.

To keep or sell depends on your budget if you plan to buy a different gun. I personally never sell guns. Only add more. I'm sure there is a medical term for it but I just can't sell a gun. As far as 7mm mag, I own a 700 CDL SS that is a great rifle but I switched to a 740 in 30-06 a couple years ago for deer hunting and the 7mm hasn't left the safe since.

Honestly, if I didn't take the .308 out to deer hunt, I think I am too the point I would grab the AR instead of the 7mm mag. This is for the type of hunting I do and short range shots. I think I shoot it better. Give up power but increase accuracy. Of course that might stir up a caliber debate.

I used an action out of a 7mm mag (model 70 Winchester with claw extractor syn stock) to build a 358 Norma mag 15 years ago that the recoil was brutal, I talked one of the other gunsmith students into shooting the rifle because I had just had heart surgery. Non the less he shot it only one time and I never fired it but I've always regretted taking the action to build something I thought I wanted.. Countless times I've asked myself why, the rifle wasn't an eye catcher but it would group well and deer fell like they had been hit with bolt of lightning. I finally sold it to get it out of sight and out of my mind, well it didn't work I still think of the rifle wishing I had it back.. I still have the ammunition I loaded for the rifle 67.5grs of IMR7828, Virgin Winchester cases, W-W mag primers, 150 gr Nosler SP or Partitions. The Model 70 Winchester would group this load less than an inch, often all three holes touching!! Sigh!! William

Probably should just keep it. It has an old Redfield Widefield scope on it. One of the old Redfields from back in the 70's I think. Bought it off a friend who had an extra one. Might sit in the safe forever, but I can look at it and think of the memories using it, plus it is my only bolt gun(besides a 22LR).

The reason I bought it because my long time hunting buddy inherited a Browning BAR 7mm Mag semi auto. He swears by the 7 mag. Well, I couldn't afford one like he had so, I went and bought the 700 ADL Synthetic. But, I had a 7mm mag. I will say when you hit a deer with it they go down like a ton of bricks.

By the way, do I need to worry about the safety issue on that model? Haven't shot it in years but thought of that. I think I bought it in 96 or 97.

I would say NO. As long as you don't point a loaded firearm at anything you're not willing to destroy, it makes no diff if it even has a safety. I've never believed any of the claims of safety malfunction so I'm not sympathetic to the results of those accidental discharges.
I was almost hit by an "accidental discharge" of a Model 700 in 1975. The final determination of cause:inexperienced user had a piece of glove stuck between trigger and trigger guard as the safety was released in the process of unloading the rifle. The cause was undeniable since the shooter dropped the rifle leaving the glove stuck in the trigger guard.

I think keeping it might be the best option. Might regret it later and if I was in a pinch for some $$$ it might be necessary. But, as mentioned, it is long paid for.

Not that I need it, but I wouldn't mind having a Ruger American in .308

Herdman,

Since time is not of the essence, feel free to look around for someone looking to swap up to a 7mm Rem Mag from a 308 or an AR-15.

Getting something you'll enjoy more is always a good thing.

If you don't use it, sell it. Use the money for something you'll use.

If you don't hunt much buy something for the range. An accurate bolt gun in 308 would be much more useful at the range and could still do double duty if you do hunt.
