I have a hole burning in my pocket

Have decided that once I sell my bike I am going to (hope to) have $800 to play around with as "hobby money".

Now... What should I do with that :D

I am thinking I have $800 for, trying firearms, cleaning supplies, case, extra mag or 2, and the firearm taxes and fees.

But I dont really know what to get, but what ever I am getting I am going to try it first or atleast hold.

The only handgun I have fired was a Colt Government 1911 in 45. I did not mind the recoil and it fit pretty well. I was hitting pop cans on my second shot.

But I would also like to look at other options.
Beretta 92FS
Beretta 90-two
Glock 17
Glock 22
CZ 75B
CZ 85 COMBAT or the normal 85
Springfield Arms 1911 Mil-Spec, the only 1911 I would consider
S&W 686 357mag thinking 6 inch, bit expensive
Springfield XD, I dont know much about these

requirements, full size and a SA/DA trigger. I do not really know which I want at the moment.

The reason for both CZ's is because I am left eye dominant but right handed. I dont think it would be a problem with shooting hand guns but I do do rifles left handed.

But the hard part is the caliber. I would like a full size and this will NOT be used for carry.

Is it a bad thing to learn on a 45? I have no problems with a 9mm though, yet my friends just say go for the 40s&w if you want a 9mm.

And another problem is that I am 19. The plan would be to have my mom gift the firearm to me. I am able to go to a range for rental but some of my choices are not on there... Like the CZ and the springfield, but I am thinking the 1911 but I do not think I really need to try that one.

And I do not reload. This would not happen tell next year at the earliest.

Well I think that is everything lol

Nothing wrong with a 9mm. Nothing wrong with the 45 either.

If this is your first gun I would say buy the CZ75 and a ton of ammo with that $800. You will not be disappointed.

I was originally thinking the ammo would be a separate budget because that is my teaching money, but the more the better :D

But the only think about the CZ is the local range does not have on to rent...

$0.02

if your only interest is punching paper the 9mm will be cheaper to feed.
however if you think you are going to want a .45 & you have the $$$$
then the 1911 or XD are both good choices.
in 9mm both CZ & Glock are good & if never Carrying the CZ will cost less.
have fun.

Get a .22 such as the Ruger Mk III. Lots of paper and can killing fun for not as much money.

My favorite handgun is an old Colt 1911. But that's me, it might not be the best choice for you.

Your best bet is to go to a range that rents guns and try out as many as you can. You also might want to take a basic pistol class where the instructor supplies the gun. That way you can get an idea about what type of gun you like.

Take your time and have fun.

I thought about a Ruger Mk lll but I decided against it because of the price is so close to a centerfire and I only have a 22 right now :o

I would get the Springfield Armory XD9 from the list. If you only plan on having the one gun.

The second pick would be the Springfield Armory Mil Spec.

A couple guns not on the list that you should look at are the S&W J-frame Airweights and the Ruger Mk Series. Both are real fun! You could buy both for the money and have a practical .38 snub and a .22 plinker.

IMHO if a person is only going to have one handgun, it should be a S&W revolver in a size and caliber that fits their needs for defense.

get whatever fits your hand and youre accurate with. there is NO easy answer here. I suggest a pistol w/ a backstrap that is replaceable lik e the walther p99 or the new glock 4th generation, or even an HK P3000 (if you can find it for less than $800.) The P99 should be doable used for like $500 and new for $650.

Dude!! Don't sell your motorcycle!!

But if you have to, I'd use the money to get a Springer XDm-9 ... great for SD and HD, accurate, no bugs, easy to take down and clean, huge capacity and a great bargain, IMHO

I would agree with BikerBill. The XDm 9mm is a terrific handgun. 19 round mag capacity is a plus at the range! You don't have to reload as often.:D I've got the XDm 3.8" barrel, but if you're not going to worry about carrying it, then the 4.5" would be a good one too in 9mm.

Ever since I got the XDm 9mm, it's seeing much more range time than my XD 45. The price of rounds being so much cheaper really makes a difference in how much practice I get.

Drummer101,

It's always good to be clear about how your gun will be used, and you did that, which makes it a lot easier for others to give you worth while suggestions. You don't plan on carrying it, so your wish to have full-size pistol makes a lot sense. If you want to shoot your gun as much as possible, then 9mm is a logical choice. It's has plenty of power, but the 9mm ammo will always be the least expensive among the major calibers, so why pay more to enjoy your hobby, when you can choose to pay less?

In my opinion the most interesting kinds of handguns to have as your hobby/range gun are the SA/DA - hammer fired models. I have quite a few pistols, some DA/SA - hammer fired, and some DAO (double action only)-striker fired, and I've always found the SA/DA-hammer fired pistols to be more interesting to handle and shoot. You have a few of the best from that category in your list. The Beretta 92FS and the CZ 75 B. I believe both are classics, and anyone looking for a gun in that category won't find anything better. And by the way, if you want your full-size CZ to be a de-cocker (like the Beretta), then look at the CZ 75 BD (rather than B). Both the Beretta and CZ are very high value guns. They are among the best you can buy at any price, yet their mid-level prices make them a lot of gun for the money.

I think I have got it down to the Berreta 92fs/90-two, the CZ 75B, and the 1911.

The Berreta 92fs years and years ago I had an airsoft version and that was so much fun and fit like a glove.

I have a CZ rifle and have not heard anything bad about the pistol.

And I have fired a 1911 and thought that was alot of fun.

I guess its just a matter of picking a choosing :o

A first handgun ? I personally think a S&W 686, 4" barrel to be a 'Bell ringer' in that arena. Solid revolver, smooth trigger, .357 magnum, or .38 Special, .38 +P, .38 +P+.

I find the 4", S&W 686 to serve numerous purposes and plain fun to practice with.

Try to rent the three guns you're considering, if possible. Consider what kind of action (SA only or SA/DA) you would prefer. See which one fits best in your hand. See which one "speaks" to you.

I feel like Beretta designed the 92FS with exactly my hand in mind, but obviously not everyone feels that way.

Beretta 92 FS

The Beretta 92 FS is one of the finest 9mm pistols available today, IMO.

I own several of them, bought my first one in the late 1980's -- they are very accurate and extremely reliable.

I've never had a failure with any of them and I've put lots of different types of fmj and jhp ammo through them over the years.

They balance well and point naturally.

The 92FS is also very easy to disassemble for maintenance.

Many folks find the grip to be large but my wife (5'3" & 105 lbs. with small hands) can run the heck out of them at the range.

In fact, the 92FS is her favorite pistol. She adores her Italian model.
