I have 2 permits to purchase...what should I get?

timrh, Just move here to PA.
No nonsense like that here :) Buy as many as you want,No permits needed :) Except for concealed carry and we can even have the evil of all evil, Assault Weapons.
You've Got a Friend in Pennsylvania :D

Lets us know what you get :)

Happy Shooting :)

Sounds to me like new jersey has to many politicians and not enough statesmen. In tennessee we can purchase all the guns we want and can afford with a drivers licence and background check. A friend of mine who works in a pawnshop sold one guy 14 guns at one time in a after christmas clearance

Its the same in Missouri. You have to go to the county sheriff's office and get a permit to purchase a handgun. You can get more than one at once, but you have to have a permit for each handgun.

N.J. isn't the only unconstitutional state, Michigan requires you take a fifteen question true and false test, pay five bucks and THEN you get a permit to purchase that is good for only ten days. After you bought your handgun you have to take it back to the issuing police station for the "safety inspection". I have bought four times and never had the guy look at anything except the serial number, which he naturally promptly recorded in his data bank. Talk about infringement!!

For a range pistol get the full size version. The longer sight radius will help minimize the effects of minor aiming errors. The additional weight and size will help to dampen recoil.

For a Glock, a model 17 is hard to beat for a fun gun. 9mm ammo is plenty cheap so you can shoot it a lot!

For a Sig, I would stick with a SIG P226 in 9mm. I like the feel of the German made P226 better. The Stainless guns don't move well in my hands. Most people will never notice the difference in feel of a P226/P229 stainless vs. the aluminum German version though.

Guys,
Thanks for all your input. I ended up getting the Sig 229 with the two barrel combination and am very pleased with the gun. I also got a Ruger .22 Single Six which I have alot of fun shooting. I forgot to metion that you have to get fingerprinted during the application process for the hadngun permit and that this law has been in effect in NJ since about 1968!!! What's funny about it now is that even though you carry a permit with you to the store to buy they still must run NICS on you even though you just went though a complete backround check to get the permit to purchase. Ludicrous but you have the media and politicians calling for more gun laws. Basically what has happened is law abiding citizens shy away from going through the process so teh criminals are actually better armed than anyone else. Which criminal do you know would go down to the police station, get fingerprinted and ask to buy a handgun and wait 3 months for it to go through?? I imagine none...

Solitar, you don't HAVE to present a concealed carry permit to buy a handgun in Texas, but if you have one, you don't have to go through the Brady check. For that reason alone, I might consider getting one!

I've bought a dozen guns with background check. I've got nothin' to hide, but for some strange reason I still resent the intrusion every time. That 4473 should be enough.

I really feel for you guys in MI, Kali, and "Joisey"...

I'm sorry, every time I see this topic, all I can think of is Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday standing in the street, drawling "I have two permits to purchase...one for each a ya..."
;)

"I forgot to metion that you have to get fingerprinted during the application process"

At least its not that bad here in MO. No fingerprints and they are only allowed 7 days to process the permit.

" What's funny about it now is that even though you carry a permit with you to the store to buy they still must run NICS on you even though you just went though a complete backround check to get the permit to purchase."

Same here.

I just picked up a single six last week. I've got about 175 rounds through it so far. Its a fun gun. I bought it to practice with until I develop some basic skills. I'm not very dominant in either eye and while I do ok with my left eye closed, it took forever to aquire the sights with both eyes open.

I like the Single Six so much, my next purchase will probably include a .45 Colt Blackhawk with the .45acp cylinder. I'm not sure I'd really want to use a single action as a defense weapon, but I actually find it more fun to shoot than my P97 or 686. I like the loading/unloading ritual - it gives me time to analyze everything I'm doing wrong, before trying again. :)

Vermont is the greatest. No permit to carry, no permit to buy (just the stupid background check that they do while you are at the store). I love living here.

You need to move next door to the better state of Pennsylvania timrh23. Other than the occasional road apple from an Amish horse and buggy, IT BLOWS Jersey away. Especially with gun regs. I can go to a shop and buy 100 handguns if I had the $. CCW permit is on a shall issue basis. You can carry anything you want as long as it's concealed. No stupid CCW course just so you can "add" a new carry gun to your license. Assault rifles, hi caps, Class III license :D Now only if the weather was warm like Florida...

I'm not being helpful, either, but when I saw the topic line, I couldn't help but think:

I have 2 permits to purchase...what should I get? GET THE HELL OUT OF ANY STATE that requires you to be that "special!"

Too bad so many goons have been brainwashed to forget that the Constitution merely protects pre-existing rights. It does not "grant" them.

Get a big semiauto and a nice .22 revolver. Big can be as big as a SIG P228/P229.

timrh23,

I've been purchasing handguns in NJ for about 15 years and I've been fingerprinted exactly one time. It was when I applied for my Firearms ID Card. Since then I've moved 4 times and had to deal with 4 different police depts. Fingerprinted once. Isn't it sad that I'm bragging about having to be fingerprinted ONLY once. Obviously, that's one time too many!
Oh, and P-35, there's no total ban on HP ammo in NJ. I can purchase it any time I want at the range. I used to buy it at Sports Authority when they still sold shooting supplies. What's tricky is what happens if you ever use it in a crime or self defense. This limits its use to the range, and I'm really not too interested in expansion when shooting a piece of paper. Yeah, the laws here are really a mess.

weegee,

I encourage you to get a CHL here in Texas. Although I have never had need to protect my life with a firearm, I have a feeling of comfort knowing that I could do just that if necessary, and with a Glock 23 to boot. Basides, at this point, they are very cheap. When I first got my CHL in '96, it cost me around $100 just for the class. Now I see them advertised everywhere for $50.

Here in NY we have to apply for a permit before purchasing a handgun. When I moved here from Maryland my guns had to stay behind untill I recieved a permit.

First I needed to make friends with four pro gun residents of my county. I needed signed and notarized references fom them. I needed to take a safety class. I needed to be finger printed five times and submit four photos. I had seven forms to fill out and get notarized myself.

Then I had to wait. After speaking to others, I found my wait was realitively short, four months to the day.

Then I had to arange to have my guns shiped from Maryland to New York; FFL to FFL. The recieving FFL had to transfer MY guns to me, for a fee of $50 per gun.

This is a restricted carry permit. I may carry to and fromt he range with no stops inbetween.

When adding a gun to my permit I need something similiar to a purchase order. I can buy the gun, but in order to take it home, I must have my permit ammended. When I added my fourth gun the ammendment process took two weeks. Now that I am in the process of adding a fifth gun I have one more little duty to preform.

Once the ammendment is approved, I must make an apointment with a county cop and have a visual inspection of my residence to insure I have the means to properly secure my guns.

Toad,
Yes, I have only been fingerprinted once also but I have heard of some towns that fingerprint you if you haven't bought a handgun in a year. If you let a year go by they are re-fingerprinting you. Anyways, I just grin and try to bear it...then I get comments from the guy who issues the permit telling me "we could use alot less of these things on the street"...to which I reply "If I had the right to carry one on the street like the criminals you wouldn't hear about them on the streets cause you wouldn't have nearly the crime but...some people are thick skulled.

Hey Postman, What county are you in??? Close to NYC? I'm in Erie county (buffalo) and the permit process sucks. I only have one pistol but I was told that adding pistols (after the first one) was relatively quick. Buy it, take the bill of sale to the county office, they amend your permit there and you can go back to the gun shop and pick it up. My county limits to Target/hunting too. It's totally unAmerican! As for what to get, I always wanted a 1911 so that's my first pistol.. A stainless steel Para-ordnance P14-45! If/when I get my carry permit (you can apply after a year) I'll pick up a smaller caliber/size for better concealment.

The first step is registration, the second step is confiscation, the final step is subjugation.

Well Toad, There are a few items I would like to revise in your statement. 1st, If you originally got your FID card separately for your pistol permit (as I did), them you would be fingerprinted AGAIN and be subject to the entire procedure AGAIN depending on how long ago you got your FID Card.

2nd: In regard to the hollow nose (point) ammo, yes there is BAN on possession of this ammo anywhere EXCEPT: "his dwelling, premises or other land owned or possessed by him, or from carrying such ammunition from the place of purchase to said dwelling or land" Just because it is not being prosecuted does not mean it is not against the law! It just makes us all law-breakers and allows the police the discretion on who to prosecute. I can see the day when this is used to close down ranges for allowing individuals to shoot "illegal ammo" there!

And YES the NJ Statutes are a mess! But at least it's not NYC! Just remember to vote this year!

desmond57,

You can revise items in my statement if you like, but that doesn't change the fact that I've been fingerprinted once. I applied and received my first permit to purchase well over a year after I received my initial ID card. I wasn't fingerprinted for it. During these 15-odd years, there have been gaps of several years between pistol permits, again with no fingerprinting. Maybe they missed me, I don't know. There seems to be a lot of local discretion.
Regarding HP ammo: Yes, I've read the piece of the law you quote, and I'm allowed to purchase HP ammo from my range and keep it in my home. I don't exercise that option because of the potential pitfalls involved in ever having to use it. As I stated in my original post, I have no use for expansion while shooting paper targets at the range. As I also stated in my original post, there isn't a "total ban" on HP ammo in NJ, just a "total ban" with execptions. Either way, it's pretty pathetic.
