Ok, dying to look at the new Glock 36. I think I will end up with the Sig 229 .357 /.40 because I passed it up for a Beretta 92fs as my first handgun. What do you guys think? Looking for a gun to take to the range mostly...

The P229 would be a very good choice. Able to shoot .40 and .357sig with just a barrel swap. Another plus in the Sigs favor is that its available now! Who knows when Glock will release the 36??

Or, you could pick up a new Hi-Power while they are still avail...

Can't go wrong with the P229...

If you're feeling a little adventurous, you could check out the new Steyr M40. I got to play with one yesterday at the shop. It's a beautiful piece IMO. Less pricey than a 229, but not able to switch calibers.

Decisions, decisions...

If your looking for mainly a range piece, the
G36 is really not the best bet IMO. It is really made for concealment and has more
muzzle flip and felt recoil (according to a Glock rep who fired one) than a G30 compact or a G21 fullsize.

If range enjoyment and accuracy are your goals I'd go with one of the others or a
Sig 220 or 229.

A P229 will work well at the range, carried legally CCW, in the mud or wherever else you care to take it. It's stoutly built and loads of fun to shoot.

So many pistols, so little money.

IMHO a 1911 is the funnest gun at the range. Ammo's reasonably cheap. They are normally quite accurate. And when you get home from the range, you can tinker with them.

Get a full size/mid size auto as a primary and then a J-fram S&W in Airlite or Ti as a back-up. If you don't carry a back-up get a 6in .357 for a house gun. Does your question mean that you have a permit to carry two guns concealed or just to buy two guns?

Most important advice......shoot before you buy, buy what you shoot well.

P-35,

Here in the Republic of NJ we have to apply for permits just to purchase a handgun. This includes fingerprinting, FBI backround check, 2 references etc. etc. Each and every time I wish to purchase I have to go through this process. Carry permit is pretty non-existent here. I guess I need to move :)

For plenty of range use I suggest a SIG Sauer P226. It's superbly accurate, extremely reliable and the ammunition is relatively inexpensive. If the P226 is too large then consider the P228.

Ewwwwwwww!!!! N.J. sucks, I thought the total ban on HP ammo was the extent of that state's foolishness. Hope it doesn;t spread form there. Move to Vermont where you can carry without a permit.

Sig P229 is a heck of a fine pistol. It will surprise you with its accuracy and smooth trigger pull. Recoil is very easily handled as well. If its too pricey for your budget then I'd suggest a Glock 22 or 23 as a primary weapon and a Bersa .380 as secondary/backup pistol.

If you dont already have your mags, I would say Glocks get the nod, there are more Glock hicap mags on the street then any other moderen guns. (exlcuding 1911's) You can always get a 1911, except for para double frames, so I would hold off on a any single stack 1911's and go for a Glock. Remember all those early police mags are somewhere and they are added to all the civis. IMO the number of Glock to Sig mags is exponentially greater, this should be helpfull if we have further restrictions and should help keep the price lower then the less available alternative for along time, in case of theft or loss. This is not true for 45 compared to Sig mags or any 10mm's, but is right on for 9mm and 40 or derivitaves, with the exception of the Berreta because of US military use. If the 40 shoots from the 9mm Berretta mags then a Berreta would be a good choice as well. Without a mag a semi is a single shot!!!!! I think mags are an important consideration for someone buying a new gun at this moment in time!!! Just my # .02....

This is the first I have ever heard of needing a permit to purchase a handgun. The idea that you should have to ask permission from your government to exercise your constitutional right is sickening. "The Great Protector", my a**. More like Big Brother. I guess I have remained blissfully ignorant living in Texas, where I bought 2 hanguns at one time last month by just plunking down my credit card and concealed handgun license.

So in Texas you needed to present your concealed carry license. Here in Colorado last year all I needed to present was my driver's license to prove age and identity.

But times they are a changin'

By next year we may not be able to buy any handguns except from the trenchcoat salesman in the alley.

As to what to get with 2 permits.
One .45 auto - full size Glock would be a good choice.
One .44 magnum - preferably a Ruger Super Redhawk with at least a 6" barrel.
(if not a .44 mag, then at least a .357 mag)

Range gun should be made of metal..........stainless..............just buy what you like...........then tell us so we can crap on your choice! LOL

Did you get a permit to exercise your first Amendment rights, too? Can't be too careful when the safety of the children is at stake.

I can't help it. This is really hard to swallow. "Permit to purchase"?? Here in Kentucky there would be a riot if some jerk suggested such a thing. Do you also have to obtain a "permit to purchase" for a rifle or shotgun?
