I HATE Maryland!

10-day waiting period
This I sorta understand ... for your FIRST handgun purchase!
If I already own guns, this "cool-down" period makes no sense IMO.

No more than ONE handgun purchase every 30 days
Again ... if my intent was to do something sinister, one gun would be plenty.

Safety Course Certificate
Yep ... I was required by law to sit and watch a 30 minute video on "gun safety". The worst example of a "gun safety" video I have ever seen I might add. If you're going to require me to watch a video on gun safety, make it more informative and less political.

CCW
There is no such thing.
Only crooks and LEO carry in the State of Maryland.

Public Ranges
There a maybe a handful in the state, but there is only one in my area and they mostly cator to LEO and treat most other customers pretty bad.
I hate going there, but I have no other option if I want to "legally" shoot my guns.

On a more positive note, I recently took a trip to West Virginia and was pleased to find that the whole attitude on guns was totally different there. Gun ranges were plentiful and those that I visited were very friendly and very family oriented. Mind you, there's plenty of private property in West Virginia to shoot on, so I'm guessing a trip to the range for most people there is more of an opportunity to socialize. :)

Here in Maryland, guns are frowned upon and I'm made to feel like a criminal simply because of a hobby I thoroughly enjoy.
I HATE Maryland.

Thanks for allowing me to vent. (rant off) ;)

Anywhere out in the boonies you can go and shoot?

I can go out in the desert, or up into the nice pine high country, and not pay any range fees.

Makes for a good escape from the 110 degree heat in the summer... a nice weekend camp trip to somewhere about 80-90 degrees with a little lake handy to go swim after a busy day of wasting ammo.

Or did they legislate that out of existence too?

MD is nice, but I found the middle to be too overcrowded and the laws too restrictive to my chosen behaviors. I moved to a place where I have to see fewer people, and where my views are reasonably accepted.

There are/were a few state owned ranges when I lived there. I had to drive out to Hagerstown to shoot however, since I couldn't afford a club membership in central MD.

I worked up there for 3 months back in 1999. Should be called The People's Republic of Maryland. Hard to believe they still recognize the below as their state song. The despot's heel is STILL on thy shore.

Move to Virginia where yankeeism/liberalism/socialism isn't as triumphant.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland,_My_Maryland

I

The despot's heel is on thy shore,
Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
Maryland!
Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle queen of yore,
Maryland! My Maryland!
II

Hark to an exiled son's appeal,
Maryland!
My mother State! to thee I kneel,
Maryland!
For life and death, for woe and weal,
Thy peerless chivalry reveal,
And gird they beauteous limbs with steel,
Maryland! My Maryland!
III

Thou wilt not cower in the dust,
Maryland!
Thy beaming sword shall never rust,
Maryland!
Remember Carroll's sacred trust,
Remember Howard's warlike thrust,-
And all thy slumberers with the just,
Maryland! My Maryland!
IV

Come! 'tis the red dawn of the day,
Maryland!
Come with thy panoplied array,
Maryland!
With Ringgold's spirit for the fray,
With Watson's blood at Monterey,
With fearless Lowe and dashing May,
Maryland! My Maryland!
V

Come! for thy shield is bright and strong,
Maryland!
Come! for thy dalliance does thee wrong,
Maryland!
Come to thine own anointed throng,
Stalking with Liberty along,
And chaunt thy dauntless slogan song,
Maryland! My Maryland!
VI

Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain,
Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain,
Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
"Sic semper!" 'tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back amain,
Maryland!
Arise in majesty again,
Maryland! My Maryland!
VII

I see the blush upon thy cheek,
Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek-
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!
VIII

Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll,
Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the blade, the shot, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!
IX

I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

No boonies and range fees here are $200 (annual).
Arizona sounds nice. :)

MD is nice, but I found the middle to be too overcrowded and the laws too restrictive to my chosen behaviors. I moved to a place where I have to see fewer people, and where my views are reasonably accepted.

Amen Brutha. ;)

Then you should move. I did..

I'm a single parent with joint custody of my 14 year old son.
He's still in school and stays with me every other week.
Both my parents are in poor health and I just live a block away from them, so you see ... moving really isn't an option at this time. :(

You're right Poodleshooter ...
Maryland is way over crowded.
Not to mention the increase in crime and gang activity (MS13 in particular).

I apologize for the rant.
Hope you understand ...
Maryland is a very stressful place to live. :(

If you think MD is bad try NJ. I recently left that state for economic and political reasons. What is this country coming to, that we must uproot ourselves in search of freedom? Where are we going to end up, as the liberties we enjoy are completely eroded? Are we going to have to leave the US? Where but in the US, is there the type of freedom we live everyday? Is the end near or possibly a new beginning? :(

Hate to add another thing to your list but I read a thing in Guns today that says antis in Maryland are pushing for a long gun ban:mad: . Here's the excerpt:

"MARYLAND LONG GUN BAN

Following the release of a new 'study' from a self-professed gun control group, Maryland Ceasefire, calls for banning long guns are surfacing throughout Maryland. The report claims a crime is committed every 48 hours with a so-called 'assault weapon.' With the misunderstanding there is no functional difference between an 'assault weapon' and any semi automatic firearm, long guns throughout the state are in danger of being legislated out of existence. The underlying intentions of this report could not be clearer. As one news report stated, 'Right or wrong, gun control advocates say they want a ban on long guns.'

I'd start writing letters and making contributions all you Marylandians.

We need to get rid of Barbara Mikulski!!! I hate her more than I do the state. Maryland is a very liberal, Democratic state. I am considering on moving to WV as well. My parents live there now. I can go hunting down there and stay at my parents house.
You know, there are actually more gun ranges in Maryland than in WV. The ones I go to are nice ranges. It`s finding a place to hunt that`s becoming a problem. With farm land getting scarce and idiot people not respecting the owners property, hunting grounds are disappearing.

Re:dino

It sounds like Maryland is a smaller version of California. I understand what you are going through.

I spent the better part of five decades living in California. Last summer I moved to Nevada. The only regret I have is that I did not move sooner. The California laws are similar to the laws of your state. Nevada is 180 degrees different. Couple that with thousands and thousands of acres of public land, this is a gun owner/hunters paradise.

There will be folks here that will call me a sell-out. They will say they rather fight then give up the ship. While that might be brave, I think it is even braver to move. While they are in the Golden State trying to change the laws(fat chance) I am saving up for an AR or AK with a folding stock and a thirty round magazine. There are no handgun purchase limits. And gun purchases take a liitle longer to complete then a latte' from Starbucks. There is no waiting period here.

Isn't one of your neighboring states a bit more gun friendly?

Isn't one of your neighboring states a bit more gun friendly?

Yes ... If I were to move, it would probably be to West Virginia.
It really is a beautiful state. :)

But, like I said ... I'm a single parent and have joint custody of my son every other week. I already have a commute every day to take him to school (in his mother's city) and pick him up. Moving out of state would make that commute virtually impossible. We also take taekwondo together twice a week and see each other quite regularly despite the "every other week" arrangements.
I also live just a block away from my parents who are both in poor health.
They too would love to move to West Virginia but can't do so due to their declining health.

brj ... I appreciate the invite!
What part of West Virginia are you from?
My girlfriend's mother lives in a town called "Lost River" (I think).
It's in Warden County ... absolutely gorgeous! :)

WSM MAGNUM ... where are all of these gun ranges in Maryland?
I live in the College Park area (bordering Washington DC) and there's really only one that I'm aware of. I've tried doing internet searches, but nothing. :(

Re:dino

I had a similar circumstance that would have prevented me from moving at one time. But even when the situation had made moving a viable option I waited many years.

As soon as you can, move!

I can not describe how different it is being in state like Nevada versus California. My first two months here I stayed with my cousin. BLM desert was virtually in his backyard. I would go into that area with a 22 revolver. I would do some plinking and take an occasional shot at a running hare. This was less then half of a mile from my cousin's neighborhood.

It took a while to get over the nervousness of shooting so close to homes. I kept waiting for local constable to show up.

I have been back to California several times since my move. I do not miss a single thing about that state.

Dino....I'm with you man. I Live in Gaithersburg, work in Silver Spring. The local ranges suck. Especially Gilberts in Rockville. The facility is nice but their policies, prices, and employees suck.
I like Hap Baker up near Westminster. I'm going to try Sanners Lake down in St.Mary's county. They have rifle, pistol ranges and they even shoot 3-gun there.

Dino,

Come down to VA and join us for IPSC shoots this spring!

PM me if you want and join the fun. Its awesome in Fredericksburg VA and North Mountain. Very friendly crew.
