I don't have a S&W snub nose 357, but want one

So I have one glaring omission from my collection (ok maybe more than one). I do not have a snub nose S&W 357.

I want to pick one up, not necessarily a carry gun, just want to add something I don't have. Blued or SS, doesn't matter. I would want to keep it under 750 or so (give or take $100)

Off the top of my head I would probably want a 686, 7 shot. Just because it is unique. I don't care one way or the other about the internal lock. It doesn't bother me, but was wondering what are some of the older classic 357 snubs to look at? I am not well versed in Smith's models.

If I could find one for $500 or less even better

Get a 66....you won't be disappointed! And I regularly carry it! My cops used to laugh til I took them ton the range and schooled them badly!!!! Accuracy is a wonderful thing!

If you get one, get it tuned up by S&W...

I'm also fond of the model 66, mine is a 66-2 with Eagle grips, I carry it in a OWB holster.

The model 60-14 is smaller, but by no means a pocket pistol as it is quite heavy for that type of carry.
I also carry it in a OWB holster

You should be able to pickup either one in your price range.

I have the 7 shot 686 snub and love it. It also has the lock and that does not bother me either. It shoots like a dream. I can tell a difference between the snub and my 6 inch 686 but none between the snub and my 4 686.
I found this one a few months ago on Armslist in a near by town and paid $700 for it. It was like new in the box. I could not tell that it had ever been shot.
The model 19/66 is not a bad idea either if one comes along first.

686+ 3"

Here's my Smith 686+ 3" bbl. (I consider 3" or less to be a "snubbie." And the "+" signifies a 7-shot.)

It was a total impulse buy. Last spring, it was at my LGS and I asked to check it out - with no intention on buying. Well as soon as it hit my hand - it felt so "right" - I told the sales clerk to write it up. Nicely balanced gun.

It's a pretty sweet gun; shoots straight, manageable recoil.

I inserted pics. The first pic, is with the stock grip. The second, with a Hogue "bantam" style grip I added on.

My first revolver was a .357 snub. It caused me to develop quite the flinch that took years to shake. It also made me fall in love with the. 357. The fire ball, concussion and recoil is a whole lot of fun, even when you're not hitting the target.

I've got the 4" 686+, also with the lock, and it's absolutely my favorite gun. Never failed to fire at the range and always a blast.

Ummm, this is really, really a bad idea. You will wind up with a flock of the darn things...

I used to look at the snubby threads and think:

"What is wrong with those guys?!"

Then I got the first one. It was all over after that.

P.S. The 44 snub didn't even make it in...

The purpose of a snub nose is to be small and concealable. With S&W, I think that means you need one of the 5-shot models. Bigger guns with snub noses are visually and functionally confused, IMHO. And who wants a confused gun?

There's nothing confusing about a gun you enjoy shooting. Guns that are carried often but rarely fired at the range, serve no purpose. There's no great skill in carrying a 3" or a 2" - it's all in how you do it. What's important is how a gun feels and the way you shoot it.

While I have always wanted a 686 my daily carry is still my trusted 650-1. Oh she kicks like a mule with full house loads but she is small, super classy, utterly reliable, and let's the bad guy know you mean business!

Not any better, just friendlier

My only experience with short 357s has been the 3" M13, 2.5" Python, and a 4" M19.

My favorite has been the 3" M13. So much so, that one was gifted to each of my Sons and one Daughter-In-Law. The RB 3" HB M13 just feels so 'right'.

My understanding was that model was, at one time, std issue to the members of the Executive Protection Detail.
