I don't care how cold it gets,,,

Hello, everyone. This is an interesting topic! Finally brought cast-iron front rest in from attatched garage. Temp. was in low 40's. when brought inside..even at these seemingly mild temps., the metal instantly fooged up..not cold enough for frosting..yet there was moisture forming.
What do you guys do when coming back from hunt/range in cold weather?
seal guns in case covered in plastic until brought up to room temp.?...It's the insides, where I can't see what worries me.

I went out once last year,,,

And saw one gentleman who had set up one of those portable deer blinds on the firing line,,,
He had one of those propane heaters inside and was happily plinking away.

I'm not quite that decadent but I might get a few of those chemical hand warmers,,,
The Evil Pawn Shop has some of them for only $1.00 each,,,
They might help keep my little feetsies warmer.

Regardless,,,
I'm gonna man up,,,
And shoot at least 100 rounds.

I have a Y-Chromosome,,,
I'm a manly guy,,,
I can do this!

I don't open the case for a couple hours after bringing in. If you do you'll be sorry. During the week of rifle hunting I leave the rifle locked in the SUV.

Hello egor20,,,

in the 40's? Skinny Dippin' Weather!

Up here in Northern NH (and Vermont) it gets damn cold. Last year I was out in - 18 F shooting, yes, minus eighteen. It was a tad frigid. It'll be in the teens tonight, still kinda warm to go shooting....

;)

FYI: You learn to pick your gun lubes on what works in the cold here. (no, this is not a thread hijack, start your own looob thread if needed). Slip 2000 is the only lube that works down into the sub zero temps that I deal with.

Hello langloisandy,,,

Not a problem my friend,,,
I can use all the cold weather advice I can get.

It'll be in the teens tonight, still kinda warm to go shooting....

Yer a different breed up there in New Hampshire. :)

I used to live on an island off the upper peninsula of Michigan,,,
But I was only in the first grade then and thought 12 feet of snow was great.

I'll be shooting a single-shot bolt action .22 rifle,,,
It's all stainless steel with a synthetic stock,,,
And I doubt the temp will get below 40.

I'll heed the sage advice given by warbirdlover,,,
Keep it in the zipper case for a few hours,,,
If it fogs up at all I'll pop the stock off,,,
And take a blow-dryer to the action.

I grew up in Tahoe (High Sierras) and learned to dress in layers. Thermals, then cotton pants, then a pair of nylon slacks over the pants. Two pairs of thick cotton socks, with water resistant breathable boots. T shirt, Pendaltin shirt, and good ski jacket. Cotton gloves with ski gloves over them. Biggest trick is to have everything breathable and yet keep out the wind and moisture. Nylon outer that is coated with Scotch Guard works well. If you start getting too warm, peal off an under layer.

Up here in Michigan it can get a little bitter. Just dress right and it feels like summer ;)

Layer up, Cant have too many! If you get hot just peel something off. Ill usually wear 3-4 longsleeve shirts, a sweater, and a coat. Recently, Ive been buying underarmor cold gear which works awesome, but is pricey.

Dont have much problems shooting IDPA practices in -11* weather. Gotta do all I can though to keep dexterity in my fingers! Taking off gloves and grabbing that cold 1911 will freeze you up quick.

Other than the occasional jaunt to the gun club (usually only when the temp goes above 40), once deer season ends I go into hibernation mode. I stay inside and don't poke my head out until the first week of March or so then if I see my shadow I go back inside for another month. This year though I'm going to make a concerted effort to get out more and do some hunting (small game and coyote) weather be damned. I have this craving for rabbit recently so I guess I'm going to have to go whack a few of them and put them in the pot.

100% polypropylene for thermals ( get cheap "surplus" )...find a working mans uniform store, they often have decent deals on warm gear, or online...

NO COTTON on the body itself. Cotton kills. ( or at least chills you when you sweat). G.I. type wool/nylon blend socks, waterproof boots. sensible middle layer if you want.

Down Jacket. Wool hat /ski mask.

Thin leather gloves are USUALLY enough with this set up, if not ski gloves or keep the leather covered hands in pockets when not shooting.

Alkaline Batteries in scopes electronics will stop working below freezing' lithium batts help some.

5 years in MN, 3 years in MI, 3 in chicaga' IL, and so happy to be back where I was born in FL.

I shoot all the time, negative temps or not.

My cousin moved to Georgia 7 years ago. Says he still handles the cold pretty well, 'till it gets below 70.

If you don't want to shoot in the cold here in VT, you'll only go to the range for about half the year. ;) Even then, you'll wade through mud for a couple months.

As long as it's above 10F, I'll go shooting. Below that, and reloading mags gets problematic as you lose contact with your fingers

Here in CT for 40s it's just "a quilted flannel shirt-jacket over regular jeans and T-shirt" weather. I have a friend who's up in Tok, Alaska. It gets cold up there. Like as in the time we were talking motor oil and he took pics of Mobil 1 that looked like grease on a stick (at about -50*F).

You could get one of those small propane infrared heaters that mounts to a gas grill tank, they work pretty well as long as it's not too windy. The Rod&Gun club I belong to has a short range in the basement, .22 LR only but it's still trigger time....
