I will not buy this pistol,,,
I gotta keep repeating this to myself,,,
I will not buy the Smith & Wesson model 639 with two mags for $400.00.

I popped into The Evil Pawn Shop today at lunch,,,
There was a man trying to sell this gun to the EPS Guy.

I've heard and read about these pistols many times,,,
But this was the first time I've handled one,,,
Man, I did like that single-stack grip.

He wanted book value for it,,,
EPS Guy needs to make a profit,,,
So they weren't able to seal the deal.

The owner packed it up and started to leave,,,
But he turned to me and said I could have it for $400.00 cash.

I said, "Thanks, but no thanks.",,,
He gave me his business card anyways.

I just bought a new 9mm I have no need for,,,
But it filled a niche between my CZ-75B and my LC9.

Heck, I haven't needed any of the last 20-30 guns I've purchased,,, :o
And it wasn't like this one was in perfect condition,,,
I'm certain it could be polished to like new,,,
But again, I have no justification for it.

So I was strong,,,
I tossed the business card.

~whew~

I sure would have loved to shoot a few mags through that pistol,,,
It would have been nice to experience what I've read about.

It's horrible walking away from a gun deal. I turned down a $500 CPO Sig 220 with night sights recently because I just can't be spending $500 right now, despite that being perhaps my favorite model of Sig.

Stay strong! The money you save can go to a MUST-HAVE later.
 
Aarond, you did not buy that pistol.

These things happen (or don't happen) for a reason.

Think about it this way: the next pistol (or rifle?) you do buy will be possible in part because of the $400 you didn't spend on this one.

The Evil Pawn Shop isn't going anywhere, is it?

I just needed some commiseration from you guys,,,
In reality all I wanted to do was shoot a few mags through it.

I've been telling The Evil Pawn Shop Guy,,,
He needs to hire me as a very part-time worker,,,
That way he could allow me to test fire the used guns he buys.

I would even buy the ammo from him.

In a lot of cases,,,
That's all I want to do,,,
I once bought a pistol just to fire it,,,
I figured I could flip it and easily get my money back.

Several months later I finally unloaded it,,,
I didn't lose money but it tied up my coin for a while.

The funny thing is,,,
As I was typing the OP,,,
I thought of the justification to buy it.

A few years back I assembled a "set" of S&W handguns,,,
J-frame in .22 LR, K-frame in .38 Special, L-frame in .357 mag, and N-frame in .44 Mag.

All stainless steel revolvers,,,
I call the set The Harem.

This would have been the odd girl in the Oda,,,
The redheaded European eccentricity, so to speak,,,
A stainless semi-auto in 9mm would enhance that set very nicely.

Now I'm really glad I didn't keep that card.

I for one am proud of you Aarond. I just walked away from a Kahr CM45. I have been waiting for one since they were announced last year. Well maybe it was because I just picked up my CT9 and placed a LCRX on layaway that very morning. Stay strong my friend.;)
 
You are stronger then I am. It would have look very nice sitting next to my M59 & M659 sitting in my safe. In other words, I would have never handed back to the owner.

You really messed up on that deal. Now you will start to dream about those single stack Smiths.

You will comb the adds looking for another at that price and they will have become unobtainable.

Soon you will be standing on a corner with a sign that says "will work for a 639" and all people will do is offer you a Big Mac.

It's a slippery slope to the bottom.
 
Good move to walk, as the Second Gen S&W is not as nice as the 3rd Gens

Ha! While I am a huge fan of all of the metal framed Smith & Wesson pistols, you are comparing apples to Buicks by posting a link to a LE-trade 5906 when comparing to a personally owned, non-issued Model 639.

Try and find a bunch of 639's or even the rare 3rd Gen 3906.
Compared to the 5906, it will be absolutely FUTILE.

I would not have passed on a clean 639 at $400.

I had read that the original model 39,,,
Was the first DA/SA that was made in America.

Was the 639 not manufactured at the same time?

I'm not very knowledgeable about the S&W semi's,,,
But this one really did nestle in my hand.

If I had not just depleted my disposable cash on a new Bersa,,,
I think I would have added that 639 to The Harem.

Oh well,,,

Another will open up soon enough.

Pfft. I went shopping for a spare mag for my 40 cal px4. I ended up buying a px4 compact in 9mm.

I think I did that wrong.

Bought the mag online later.

Based on the fact that more regrets came from walking away than from scratching an itch. :D

The Model 39 was the first commercially successful DA/SA 9mm pistol built in the USA, and it was an extreme success story, with nearly 500,000 guns built and sold. The Model 59 was the double stack version of the same pistol and these two pistols were the Fathers of the American police movement from the .38 Special revolver to the 9mm semi-auto pistol. The Model 639 was a second-generation of the Model 39 and while the 39 was an aluminum alloy framed pistol, the 639's frame is stainless steel.

Frankly, all of the metal framed Smith & Wesson pistols are fantastic handguns. The 3rd Gen pistols were a little more refined. The second generation of guns were made in the fewest total numbers.
 
I know exactly how you feel. In 1972 I passed up a NIB Winchester model 12 for $200.00, cuz I didn't have $200.00 to spend on anything but college. In 1980 I passed on a NIB Thompson semi-auto sub-machine gun for $300.00 because I had a new baby and a new house to pay for first. 7 or 8 years back I passed on a Baer pistol because my FIL was looking for a Hi-Power and we were going to split the $2000.00 price but he didn't want to buy them both the same day. I went back later to buy it myself, but of course, it was gone.

Such is life. I try to keep those mistakes to a minimum now.
 
ROFLMAO - I walk away all the time.
I have never meet a gun I did not want and that induces Glocks.
I have bought some really trashy guns and prettied them up and made a little cash.
Since I collect WW2 battle rifles I walk away daily not buying something I want or need to fill my collection.
