I dealt with my GF's parents.... w/video

Nice.
I wish I would have videotaped some of the stuff I've destroyed over the years.
TVs, monitors, computers, etc.
I had to do community service (80hrs) as a REQUIREMENT to graduate from high school!! Well, we had a really cool IT guy at school who let me get mine by sitting in his school trailer for hours playing monster truck madness on a projector. One day he took me outside to a dumpster filled with old computers the school was trashing and let me go to town. OMG was that fun. I had so much fun smashing them that I had to take a couple home with me to destroy. Shotguns (with or without slugs) are most fun.
These were the same computers that we typed on in junior high when our teacher would cover our hands with cardboard and say things like "remember the home row" and "you're not even trying!"...
Talk about a teen stress reliever! We unloaded hard on those poor old Apple IIGSs... :D

I forsee a short life for this thread...

too much computer, not enough gun. Remember which forum you are in, and focus (on the front sight) people, or this one will go away.

A serious (?) discussion of what caliber will stop a runaway hard drive (or some such) might prolong things, ....might

Oh don't be such a party pooper

freezebyte, it's the mods job to be a "party pooper" as you call it.
It's a bonus, though, when they do it with humor and style, and don't automatically lock you down.
44 AMP has done this. Apparently, he's a pretty nice guy.

I was gonna say that 9mm and below is obviously meant for 120gig HDs and below, and that 45ACP is optimal for the larger drives, but no point now... :D

I don't think a .22lr has the energy to get through the metal case of a hard drive. You would have had better luck shooting at the printed circuit board on the underside of the drive, although the platters would still be intact. A .357 magnum shooting jacketed soft point would probably do the trick. Sound better, too.

Actually, the "top" of a hard drive is usually aluminum no more than .5mm in thickness. The sides and under carriage are cast aluminum with varying thickness (some sections as much as probably 6-7mm). A .22lr may have trouble going through the "bottom" of a hard drive case, (where the PCB would be) but the impact alone could (possibly) shatter the platters, which are usually a glass substrate coated with a magnetic...well...coating.

I haven't tried it myself, but I would wager a bet that a 9mm would go through the meatier parts of a HDD just fine. (ie: going from the bottom, through the PCB, the aluminum case, the platters, and out the top.) Well, definitely a .40, but I think a 9mm would work too, (maybe a .380?).

Hmmm. My brother in law is a big computer guy and he and my sister are visiting my parents house this weekend for her birthday...
I bet I could get him to bring a few old drives out with him. I have the guns in all the above calibers and then some.
Sounds like a worthwhile experiment...

Looked like a good time to me, but don't let Paul Miner or Gary Marbut catch you shooting "stuff" at the range, they don't like it when people shoot things that aren't paper/steel "targets." ("But Paul, I WAS using it for a target!")

Don't mean to be another party pooper, I've always been disappointed that I can't take a bunch of water filled plastic bottles and other fun stuff up to Deer Creek and shoot the snot out of 'em. I guess I understand why though, it would only be a matter of time before people brought up piles of glass bottles and old TV sets, and then the range would be a disaster area.

I spoke to Paul on the phone *I think it was* at the WMFGA phone mumber and asked about the rules and what not about the range before I became a member. I came out straight and asked him about shooting computers and he stated he's done the same thing a time or too. He was somewhat indifferent about it, as long as I cleaned up after myself. He was firm on no glass targets as they are difficult to clean up afterwords which I could understand.

Well you've done me a favor then, Mr Freezebyte. That stack of empty 2-liter bottles and gallon milk jugs is just itching to get shot!

You may wanna call next week and ask the same general question and see if his answer is the same. Assuming its the same guy. He said he was in charge of the place in some way, I remember him saying that. I really don't see why its such a big deal bringing plastic jugs with water. They explode, easy to clean up in just a few pieces and the water evaporates. He did say though when I asked him about fruits and veggies that they would leave too much of a mess.
