I Can't Find Ammunition At Illinois Walmarts

I am not actually in Chicago, but out in the suburbs....not in Cook County. I can't understand why I can't find ammunition or guns for the matter at Walmart. If you live in suburban Chicago, it seems you're limited to buying ammunition at gun shops. Does anyone know what's the deal with Walmart n Illinois? I know they used to sell guns and ammo here but I've been to 3 stores and no guns, no ammo. Perhaps the anti gun politics of our state brought too much pressure on Walmart? Has Walmart caved? If anyone is familiar with this issue, please advise. Thank you.

If your Walmart is anything like the one in my city (in central Arkansas), they may have run out of ammo. I went looking for WWB .45 ammo yesterday, and they were completely out. They had just a few boxes of .22 and .22 mag, a couple different types of rifle ammo (.308 and 7.63x39 if I remember correctly), and some .25 ammo. The glass case was almost empty. Also, there were signs posted stating that customers could only buy 5 boxes per day.

Maybe it's not just your Walmart.

If you can't get it there, then take your money to another retailer.

You're not exactly beholden to them, and other retailers have ammo.

For some reason I can't fathom, people seem to consider WalMart the ammo distribution depot of their town. The truth is, they have less in-stock than any other Big 5, Sports Authority, Dicks, Cabelas, Bass Pro or mom-n-pop gun shop.

The reason people (myself included) is because they have the cheapest prices by at least a $2.00 on practice fmj centerfire ammo. I buy my carry ammo from the regular gun shops. If Walmart doesn't have practice ammo, I buy it at one of the gun shops I frequent because the have it for the same as Bass Pro or Dicks.

In response to the OP. It's not just your locale. There has been an ammo shortage nationwide for going on 2 years.

I'm in Crook County (but outside Chicago). I was pretty confused the first time I went to a Wal-Mart here and saw no guns or ammo.

I know they carry them downstate, but I guess it just wasn't worth the hassle here because 2nd Amendment rights are so restricted.

Just buy online by the case.

AMEN to that!

Sorry, but if $2.00 is going to break your bank, you might want to reconsider your hobby, or take up reloading.

It never ceases to amaze me how many folks are upset about what it takes to shoot more than in SD. It takes practice, and practice costs money. Want to do it cheaper? Buy used reloading equipment and components and have at it.

Why shoot 5 boxes when you can shoot 6 or 7 for the same money? It's called getting the most for your money.

Not everyone has time/the desire to reload. That's a whole second hobby in and of itself. Between work and the hours spent at the range (don't forget a couple more to clean our guns) alot of people don't want spend more time locked in the garage making ammo.

You got to go to rural Walmarts...I hit up the one in Paris, IL when I pass through and they always have 9mm.....poor towns dont sell out like other areas.

worth taking the drive over the boarder to cabelas in hammond indiana. or going up north towards gurnee. the walmarts up there have been pretty fruitful, or west to ottawa to the farm and fleet. all good options.

the cabelas in hammond has had 250 rd bulk boxes of 9mm, bulk 38, tons of commie ammo, and plenty of ar ammo.
45acp is still scarce and they have never come close to being low on 40sw.

happy hunting.

I too frequent the Chiburbia Wally's, not because its the only place for ammo just the least expensive. I shoot about 1000-1500rds of centerfire handgun a month, and another 500-1000rds of 22lr. So I am always looking for the lowest cost ammo to punch holes in paper I can find. I don't reload and probably wont until I move to my retirement home where ever that will be.
I have only found about 5 boxes of .45acp in the last 6 month. Maybe 10 boxes of 9MM and as much .40s&w as I can shoot they always have it. 22lr on most occasions is available, just not always the brand I want....
Most of the time I just order a case online for whatever the best price I can find but with shipping it has never been less the the Wally's usually $1-2 more a box, sometimes more especially .45....

walmart ammo

I live in a small gully during the winter, soon I will being going north to the prairie where I belong. I use Luckeygunner.com for my ammo purchases.
They send it same day fedex ground. i get it in my cattle gate dropbox
sometimes the next day. I buy Armscor precision for range shooting.
its about 4 dollars a box cheaper than gunstore and no tax, but there is shipping. I buy a 1000 rds at a time, and it's 24.00 shipping.
they give me occasional coupons, so time your purchases. If your going to buy at Cabelas, or Gat guns. expect to pay 24.00 for aguila fmj 230gr. at gat, who knows what at Cabelas, they run dry a lot.
You like to post online, buy online.
I try to communicate with the gunsmith's at the manufacturers and they are using me as a guinea pig. I test their stuff and give them my documented findings, and they send me parts and ammo(I just got 3 boxes this afternoon as a matter of fact). Off to the range tomorrow.

In the last couple of months, ammo has started showing up at local Wally Worlds. The Wally Worlds here in Lexington stopped selling guns a couple years ago. I'm told some Wally Worlds sell reloading components. They don't appear to have a universal corporate policy.

The Walmart in Dundee, IL near GAT Guns carries ammunition, but has been pretty much sold out recently.
I'm not out there that much so I'm not sure how often they have any. Some suburban Walmarts carry it, some don't.

do you know what really chaps my hide? when you do go to walmart and you see a few boxes of the caliber of ammo you want for a cheap price, but theres no sales person to unlock the case and sell you the boxes, and you ask a stock person walking by to help out, but you know they just walked off. and you get the lady working the oil change counter to page someone to the sporting goods section, and you stand there for 10 minutes and noone shows up, and you walk away in disgust

I agree Greyson97. I never find a salesperson at the ammo counter. Always have to go searching only to have them tell me they're out of stock.

northern IL shooters

I see a lot of posts on here from the Cook Co, McHenry, Kane and Dupage area.
with all you shooters, why dont you organize a shooters club and get a local range to cut you a deal on a range night. you could pool your ammo purchases and pool your range fees. only thing is one night a week might be too much for some, it's not for me..
You could shoot 22lR also, to save $$.
I don't see any of the clubs around like i used to see, maybe they dont advertise.
In my mind, I ain't going to justify driving too far, i go 20 mins to my range, and pay 8.00 to shoot. I go during the day, and have the place to myself.
The rangemaster is a good guy. I usually go every week.
