I think it's a waste of money for a new shooter to buy a premium firearm.
Something well-built and reliable and accurate... but not necessarily a collectible or overly unique in the marketplace.
Glock, Sig, Ruger, Smith, CZ, FN, have at it.
N00Bs, please stay away from the VBOB/CBOBs, the K-frame .357's, any Colt revolver, Sig P210's and custom 1911's. You don't know enough to appreciate them for what they are, you'll scratch 'em or brake parts on 'em or fail to care for them properly and end up ruining them from ignorance or neglect and you'll take them off the market for more experienced gun owners to appreciate.
Elitist? You betcha.
I've played guitar for a long time. In college, a buddy of mine decided he wanted to learn, so he went out and bought a Guild BluesBird and a matching Guild dreadnought. $3000 worth of guitars for a beginner student. He played for about a year. Got pot-smoke in the body of the dreadnought. Didn't care for them because he didn't understand their real worth to a musician who could appreciate the playability and tone improvements they offer over a typical Yamaha or Ibanez quality student guitar.
That's where that outlook comes from, and it ain't likely to change.
Should there be a law against buying a premium gun as a first? Of course not. But there should be some common sense on the part of the first-time buyer.
