Hypothetical - please respond

Say there was a massive invasion (doesn't matter who the enemy was) and every able bodied male was called out and told to bring their long gun. If you had but one long gun (imagine that you have no handguns) whether it was a rifle or shotgun, would you bring it with you or leave it at home if you had a wife and family? Just curious as to how many folks would leave their families disarmed.

I will explain the purpose of this question later. Thanks for responding.

Going off to war without your weapon seems silly to me. I would bring my rifle. Families have been left behind for thousands of years, by in large to remain unscathed.

Nobody in my family has had only one long gun. Includin two generations after me.

Sam..."daughter; "Pop, this is Stan, we want to get married." me, "what does he shoot?"

Very interesting. I'd take a couple of my friends and go knock off a gun shop. Sounds bad, but No, I won't go to war un-armed, even though I would collect guns on the way :) And No, I wouldn't leave my family unarmed.
I would probably take either our 6mm, or .243, I love them both equally :D Hopefully it's the germans that are attacking.
1. we've beat them before.
2. I've always wanted a luger :D

Hypothetically, I guess, I'd leave them the gun, because at war I have a better chance of hanging back for a while, and collecting a dead guys gun (either team :() But there is virtually no-way my family would get a gun from attackers.

One of the things I was taught to do by my Grandpa was to scavenge to survive. I'd bring me a real sharp set of knives and get me some...rifles, that is.
If that didn't work, I'd bring some barter goods and try to horse trade someone for their rifle.
I'd figure out how to get one somewhere along the way.

If there was a massive INVASION, the last thing I would be doing is leaving my family.

In the final analysis, my family is my army. In the proposed scenario, if the idiot calling me to arms didn't have a gun for me, I would chalk him up as ANOTHER enemy.

I would take care of mine and devil take the hindmost.

got to agree with Lavin I wouldn't leave home. I'd put the boy on the north side with his 22 the wife on the east side with the .30 30 and 9mm and I would float with the 7mm and the .45. If they get too close I would set off the charges.

Trick question, huh Gary?
If the situation has deteriorated to the point where I am only allowed (by circumstances, government fiat, custom or whatever) to own one long gun, then WTSHTF, that long gun will be doing what it should be doing, protecting my family. And in my family, no one is better qualified to use that gun than me. So start the war without me, fellas, I won't be along for a while!

If they take our guns, I intend to let my hair grow long and acquire the jawbone of an ass.

Very interesting question, Gary. I remember not too long ago that I *did* only own one long gun, and no side arms.

I would probably have a hard time deciding between staying home with my shotgun and guarding my family, or going to the defense of our nation armed with an axe. There is no way that I would leave my family home unarmed.

I think that there would be many other patriots fighting under-armed, like me before they would leave a wife and children defenseless. In such a scenario, men and families would team up. My neighbor and I would go to defend our nation's borders with a rifle and an axe between us, and our families would stay together and defend themselves, if necessary, with the shotgun.

Personally I agree with Lavan.

BUT Staying within the bounds of the thread.
I would leave my rifle at home and take my LandCruiser, Axe, Chainsaw, Petrol Can, X- Bow, etc.
You know all the "dangerous" stuff the Gov doesn't [currently] mind it's citizen's owning :D

Already been to areas where TSHTF. Sorry, I put in my time. I'm not leaving my loved ones again. Especially if they were to be unarmed. Consider me AWOL.

but.... if I were to play this game, I'd leave my rifle with my family and take my bowie and blowgun with me.

First off, I wouldn't allow myself and my family to be caught in such a dumb ass situation to begin with. One gun??!? My wife alone has several and is proficient with all of them.

OK. To your question. I'd kiss my wife, leave her with insert weapon here, grab a field pack and a knife and look for opportunities. Easier said than done.

Very tough question, Gary. I'll be interested to see where you go with this.

From where/whom is the potential danger to my family? Seems to me that in today's US of A, one's family might well be in greater danger from another US citizen than from some invader hundreds or thousands of miles away.

In A.D. 2000, I'd leave the family armed, and figure on acquiring the necessities in the combat area. If our government, for some reason, could not provide--well, a dead enemy can. Or a dead ally, for that matter. A rifle doesn't care who fires it.

i would leave the gun at home and collect on the way.
i won 30 knives, about 25 of those are quality knives, and about 20 of those are fighting/tactical knives, and i am very good with all of them.
so i would just grab a few of those, and feel pangs of sadness as i left my rifle at home.

HI! I assume you mean one rifle per household due to some POS law that was foisted upon use "for our own good" and no access to an armoury or gun shop like we know them now.

I would get together with my neighbors, move all the families into one place leave half the rifles there with people that I know can use them. Then take a force out to go and "Liberate" more and better arms from the invaders. I would not wait for the fight to come near my family before acting. I would rather have them shooting at me alone than driving a tank into my home with my family in it. By then it is to late.

Reminds me of a question I asked my dad. I asked him what rifle I should get in case TSHTF. He collects Marlin rifles, most are over 100 years old and doesn't like "newer" rifles.(yea I know)
He said "Wouldn't you like to have a nice new selective-fire rifle?"
I said "Of course but...price, availability and restrictions..."
His response "Don't you think whomever comes for you would have a nice new rifle like that?"
"Well yea." I said.
"Well than all you have to do is take theirs then don't you? Anything that shoots can do that."

Once again I lose to my fathers logic.
I hope I continue to do so for a long time to come.

Why just able bodied males would be my first question? But in keeping with the thread, I'de leave the long arm home since my wife is a far better shot than I am with a longarm. Somewhere along the way I'm sure I could pick up a handgun.

Presuming I'd consent to leave (and I probably would, given my personal situation,) I'd go on MY terms.

We'd work it out--Probably ONE good hunting buddy and I would go together, one leaving the rifle behind, and taking one with us. It wouldn't be long before we had some more weaponry.
