Since all the tactical guys seem to be avoiding this thread like the plague I'll go ahead and play. Home brew Savage 110 in .243 (now wearing a 3-9x Redfield):

Missouri Hog Hunting guns

I will be using my Mini-30 on our Hog Hunt next month. Wife will have a Ruger 44 magnum carbine. I will have a Winchester Model 100 .308 for a back up carbine, if either of the first team doesn't do the job. AND a Charter Bulldog 44 SPL in a vest holster. I think we are covered for this hunt.

More about the Indiana Deer Hunting regs after we do the Missouri Hog Trip.

Riggins_83,

Does that one piece weaver style base ever get in the way of reloading? I have always liked the idea of a solid, one piece base, but have shied away from them because they always seemd to take up too much of the room between the action and the scope.

Especially in a larger caliber rifle that only has a magazine that holds three rounds. Reloads are often needed and larger ammo seems like it might be harder to fit into the rifle with a one piece base.

What have you found?

Nice rifle, BTW!

Not hunting this year, but I used this Savage 11 a lot last year.

Okay, I'll play.

My go-to hunting rifle is a Savage 111 in .30-06. Nikon ProStaff scope.

Of course, my Ruger Super Blackhawk is a constant companion in the woods.

I could go on like this all day.

To my way of thinking, any rifle that I can hunt with is a hunting rifle. It’s not limited to only “big game” but to all game and to varmints too.
I have used;

40 cal flintlock.
50 cal flintlocks,
58 cal Hawken cap-lock
62 cal flintlocks.
22 rimfires
222 Remington
5.56 AR-15s
6mm Rem
25-06
6.5 Swede
6.8 SPC AR-15s
270 Winchesters
270 WSM
7mm Mauser
300 Savage
308s
30-06s
30-40 Krag
30-30s
300 H&H
303 British
7.62X54 Russian
7.62X39 Russian
7.65 Belgian
8MM Mauser
338-06s
338 Mag
348 Winchester
35 Remington
9.3X74R
375H&H
44 Mag
416 Taylor
404 Jeffrey
45-70s
458 Winchester
460 G&A
50-140 Sharps.

I have also hunted with and killed with the following handguns
22 LR
221 Fireball
32-20
38 Spl
357 Magnum
44 Magnum
44 Spl
45 ACP
45 Colt
454 Casull

And I add to all the above list 7 kills with recurve and long bows 5 deer, 1 antelope and one elk.
2 of the deer were killed with aluminum arrows and all the rest of the animals were killed with wood arrows. None with compound bows, but I never owned one of those. If I did I am sure I could have used it too.

Hunting is a skill.
A “hunting rifle” is any rifle that can be used while performing that skill.

What have you found?

I haven't found it to be an issue for reloading or ejection at all. Installed a similar setup on my dad's Browning A-Bolt 300 win mag, no issues either.

Jack O,

The only thing missing from that photo is a red check flannel shirt, jeans and a pair of white soled work boots. Good job throwing the trapper in there.

I don't have a picture, but I will use a Winchester Model 1894 Ranger in 30/30 with a Williams aperture rear sight. Around these parts, a typical shot is 25 to 50 yards. Until the sun comes up, I'll keep the screw in aperture in my pocket and shoot through the hole in the mount.

Primary- Browning A-Bolt 30-06, Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42 Scope.
Backup- Stevens (Savage) 200 30-06, Redfield 3-9x40 Scope.
