Hunting rifle to go with my 'low' recoil round.

Another vote for the Marlin. I have a XS-7 in 308 and it is a nice rifle. I topped it with a vertex scope and all together I was about 510 out the door.

I just got a Win model 70 in 300 win mag and it seems to be a nice rifle as well but they are worlds apart on price. I only got this rifle through some trade so it is has not cost me any thing out of pocket.

I actually haven't seen one of these Marlin's locally yet, I'll try and make an effort to hunt some down and try it on for size.

Given that you have budgeted $600 for the rifle, itself, I'd go with a Weatherby Vanguard MOA.

In my area, the price of the Vanguard MoA rifles has gone up considerably.
Combine the higher price with a poor bedding system, and a bolt that likes to jam with the slightest amount of debris... and the Marlin comes out on top.

I spent 10 zillion hours researching low recoil deer killers.
a .243 SEMI AUTO.
80 gr nosler ammo, and a HEAVIER gun.... with a good recoil pad.

semi auto is a must. a recoil pad is a must.
and a heavier gun if you can carry it all day long.

.243

Good point re: 20" bbls. In a .243 there is not much bullet weight, and I too would want a 22" tube to maximize velocity. In larger cals, 20" is fine, but I want max velocity out of a ctg like the .243.

Saw one of the Marlins the other day, and from a distance mistook it for a Kimber, no lie. Classic lines, blue steel and walnut, checkering.

Savage/Stevens 10 is likely best buy, but I don't care for the look of the accu-trigger, though you can't deny it makes a good bang switch.

Here's my vote for a Ruger 77-II

My Vanguard has not crapped out once in all the times I've crept around the Bankhead and Skyline.

Just checked a few places here; yep they've gone up quite a bit.

Will also say this; The Marlin XL/XS rifles are a good deal. I've got one in 30-06 and have no complaints.

In my opinion, .243 does its BEST deer/antelope work with muzzle velocity well above 3,000 fps. This means bullets of 100 grains are too heavy.

Try the some of the new monolithic bronze bullets or Sierra Pro Hunter 80 grain bullets for TOP performance.
