Hunting Public Land

Depends Where

In California, I did not enjoy hunting on public lands. The few good spots had too many people and too little game. California just has too many people competing for too little space.

In Nevada, there is a ton of public land and a small population, espically in the Northern part. Hunting on public land in Nevada is very different then in California. You can go out on public land in the Silver State and not see another soul for days. Firing a howitzer is many places would not even be noticed.

I guess it all depends where the public land is located.

Hunting public lands in California is not as bad as most people think. There are crazies out there and Cal seems to have more that their share. Best thing to do is get in place before anyone else (usually a while before sunup) be prepared for a long vigil.

There are enough people tramping through the woods to keep the game moving even during the "slack" periods of the day. Have some patience and you will usually get one. Sometimes it will take you a few days, but it has allways worked for me.

WHAT!!!!!

Public land hunting in California is not that bad!? Compared to what? If you find an area of public land without crowds then it will also lack game. If there is game to found, then there are crowds.

Here is an example of my experience.

There are a few spots that offer pretty good public dove hunting. You arrive on opening day and there are hundreds of trucks parked around there. It reminds you of a Wal-Mart parking lot the day before Christmas. Now, if you had left the evening before you may have found a place to park. You better head to find a hunting spot three or four hours before start time otherwise you may not find one. Having an umbrella also helps. When the shooting starts it will protect you from the raining 8-shot.

Here in Nevada I have gone to hunt dove on opening day on public land. I could not see another human anywhere near me. I could hear shots in the distance, but unless they were firing cannons, I was out of range.

So, I guess some people must enjoy crowds when they hunt. I don't!
