If my state passes the new law it will allow rifle cartridges up to 1.8" what would be an idea rifle for deer hunting?

Post a link to the pending bill in the legislature, please?

But that length seems to indicate only pistol cartridges like the .357Mag, .44Spl/ .44Mag, or the .45 long Colt.

Need to see more. What State???

Indiana, your allowed to use pistols now but the barrels have to be so long. I think you can use 45 long colt rifles now. Most people just use shot guns around here ;)

Mine is 3.34" (.300 Win Mag). Guess that won't work. :D

I've driven through Indiana many times and I see huge open expanses of farm land with wood lots and not many houses. What moron decided it had to be shotgun only? Some counties in Wisconsin that have been shotgun only have switched back to rifle this year. The biggest deer producing county in the state (Waupaca) is the main one that comes to mind. It's no different terrain and population wise then any of the counties surrounding it so it made no sense.

Sounds like they are going to allow rifles chambered in usual revolver rounds.

Awesome. Maybe Ohio will be next. I've been e-mailing those ya-hoos for years now that the laws make no sense. I can use my SRH 454Casull, but I can't use a lever gun in 357Mag:confused:

I can use a muzzleloader with a saboted .429" pistol bullet, but I can't use a lever gun chambered in 44Mag:confused:

Makes no sense to me.

I don't understand it either they probably think more deer will get killed. Maybe they don't think people own high powered rifles so there's no sense in allowing them because people might go out and buy them?

Well it was originally based on the idea of ricochet. They think that rifle bullets ricochet more than shotgun slugs. But modern testing has proven that shotgun slugs are far more prone to ricochet than a SP rifle bullet. Now FMJ rifle bullets are a different matter. I've personally been shocked at watching 223Rem FMJ tracers ricochet when shot into a steep, soft bank. Scary for sure.

I've been to Indiana a few times, and it is very flat. So is the northern half of Ohio. But the southern half is very hilly, mountain foothills.

So in my mind, they just need to legalize rifles, with exception of FMJ's are prohibited.

How about the BR cartridges? 22, 6mm, 7mm, 30 BR?
223 Rem, 6.5 TCU, 7 TCU?
243 WSSM, 25 WSSM?
Just because some non-gun folks don't know about real rifle cartridges shorter than 1.8" doesn't mean they don't exist!

scorch, every one of those come in at over 1.8 inches oal.

The .44 magnum comes in just under 1.8 oal.

I'm pretty sure that there will be a very specific list of acceptable cartridges available as soon as the law is enacted; as it stands, all it will cover are pistol cartridges, 32-20, 25-20, a few other pistol based rounds, and the handgun rounds.

Chavo, I'd say to get a lever action or bolt rifle in .44 magnum. Better than a shotgun slug in some ways, but not much. I'd prefer, probably, to have a good accurate 12 gauge slug gun.

A .44 mag single shot rechambered to .445 super mag. Or you can go up to .45 caliber and get a .454 Cas. or .460 S&W.

From what I've heard from others in your area, it's the case that has to be no more than 1.8" not OAL.

I looked up the regulations, it says that currently only rifles of .357 or larger and a case length of 1.6 or so are legal. It specifically listed a bunch of magnum class handguns, 38-40, and .458 socom.

in pistols, it also must be .357 diameter, but they allow 38 S&W, 38 new police, 38 acp, and a whole lot of cartridges I'm not liking to see. 9mm is out, and 30 carbine, 32-20 and others are out.

Am I reading this right?

Is it they will allow cart. up to 1.8 or is it OVER 1.8?

Wyoming has a simular law where we have a min. lenght for rifle rounds.

Here is 23 cal or over and min oal of 2 inches (leaves out my 25-20).

As to pistols, it has to be .35 or greater, and "generally" develops a ME of 500 ft lbs at 100 yards (leaving out 38/357s).

From what I've heard, this year the specs are for a 1.6" case and next year it's being bumped up to 1.8"...
So is it case or OAL?

edit: It's case length. That does open your options much wider than 1.8 OAL.

Looks like you are going to have plenty of cartridges to choose from.
Many of those listed are greater than 1.8" case length, and it looks like the minimum 357 caliber will still be in effect, too.
