Hunting Auto loaders....

BAR's are exceptional rifles. My father has an aluminum receivered .308 that will outshoot most bolt guns we own. It has never hiccupped once.

The primary reason I think you don't see more is 1) weight, 2)cost, 3) bolt guns are usually more accurate. I have a BAR and it is a very good rifle but it is heavy and I don't ever plan on more than 1 shot. I don't even work the bolt on my gun after the shot most of the time. Not bragging, I just don't take risky shots.

Publius I guess the hunting scene is a little bit different US vs EU. for driven hunts a semi is great.
for bear hunts to, especially with a dog it is close,

I don't know How many companies still make them. But as far as who makes the best you would be hard pressed to do better than a Browning Bar. I had a Safari model in .270win. It would hold moa out to 300yds. with good ammo. It was stolen about 3 years ago with a VX3 4.5-14x50 scope mounted on It.

I had a BAR in 270 years ago. I handloaded Nosler 130 gr SBBT bullets over IMR4064 and that rifle would really shoot. Not as well as my Sako does today, but I did drop a coyote at 365 yards, while shooting from USMC approved sitting position. Had a 6 power Leupold on it back then. I only went to a bolt gun for longer brass life and incrementally better accuracy. And..the BAR was a lot tougher to clean thoroughly than a bolt gun is. Oh, yes, it was pretty darn heavy too.

i think the number 1 reason most hunters prefer bolts for hunting is because of weight ( if your actually hunting and not sitting in a blind all day) years ago i was looking for my first rifle for hunting and 3gun comps, bolts just wouldnt cut it- I picked up a .308fnar 20"-- its a fine piece of gear and super accurate. But not the best for walking miles. I dont think i will ever sell it, plus with all those pigs taking over it will be a great hog Reaper going foward.
