How's the crime in your neighborhood?

I've used this link before, handed it out in the 'hood, opened a few eyes when our zipcode came back at the low end of moderate risk (4). We live in a 'nice' neighborhood, just inside the Washington beltway, but within a one mile radius of our house we've had two murders, two attmpted rapes at the Metro station, a drive-by shooting at the local high school, one hot burglary on the next block, and there are three registered sex offenders who have 'come home' from jail/halfway houses in the last 24 months. 911 response is good (usually about 5 minutes), but as you know, a lot can happen in 5 minutes. After a couple meatballs tried to push their way into my house on afternoon 'to use the phone' two years ago, I bought my first handgun. Live &learn. M2

I workin a very safe neighborhood BUT that isn't relevant because of the likelyhood of a few screwballs among the 1200 co-workers.

As for where I live, some moron has pulled three armed robberies of businesses here over the last week and I got "shined" last night because I fit the description loosely (same height, race and age though I am lighter and much cuter). We have avg. to slightly above avg. crime rates here which is why de-facto "no CHL" so-called laws bug me so much.

I'm getting ready to move from a 3 neighborhood to a 6 neighborhood. I'm suprised that my new neighborhood is ranked so low, since the reason I got the house so cheap was because HUD considered it an area "in need of assistance" -- i.e., teachers and cops. I would have expected a 7 at least.

Oh well -- 6 is high enough to make me happy that my home will be protected.

Considering it's tax time I think crime is high in every neighborhood about now - especially robbery & extortion. But it still says a 3 for my neighborhood. ;)

Live and work in a 4.

Moved a couple years ago from a 6. IMO, it was a 10!

Thanks for the informative link.

Live in a 3, but around here it would be more like a 1.
I think the reason for the 3 is because there are a couple of trailer-parks within my zipcode which are sometimes "troublespots".
There's only been one crime I can think of around here in the last 4 years, and that's where a guy's Mauser was stolen by one of his so-called "friends", and it WAS recovered. ;)

I wonder how accurate this is. My neighborhood says 3. My folks are in a 1. Then I punched in my old zip code from our apartment in Chicago, not a good area and it said 2!!!!! I figured the old neighborhood should have been at least 4. I don't think it's right.

Hmm, until last week, I lived in a "1" zip code, on the edge of a "4". No information is available on my new neighborhood (I think it's a new zip code), but it borders a "3".

But I work in a "9" neighborhood. In the 2 1/2 years I've worked here, there've been (that I can recall):
2 burglaries (only my building - don't know about the others)
1 drunk pedestrian killed (run over by police)
1 fleeing suspect chased into my building
1 arson (1 block away)
1 high-speed chase right by the building
1 hit & run (motorcyclist struck)
1 300 lb naked woman walking down the street (no, I'm not making that up)
etc, etc.

And those are just the ones I know about because they all happened during working hours.

But since I work in a state building, I'm not allowed to exercise my 2nd Amendment right on a daily basis (felony). But the politicians across the street have metal detectors and armed guards - we got squat. I don't like walking to my car after dark - I can only imagine how my female coworkers must feel...

Cabrini Green housing came out as a 9 so maybe it is right LOL. The area I have to go to a birthday party in a few weeks is a 9 :( and the party is at night :(. Im dead LOL.

Well well well,
Living in the country is good.
My Zip,(includes town) is a 1...

Live in a 1..
Last week it was rated as the safest and lowest crime region in the state of Calif...the little crime here is the occassional drunk; saloon fight; and theft of agricultural equipment.

The humorous aspect about it is that crime hasn't changed rurally in 30 yrs, it has gone down in the cities (there had been a serial killer preying on coeds) hence the top state rating...yet the Sheriff attempts to take credit by citing deputy use of volunteer fire depts as base camps in rural areas.

I live in a 4 - but here's the kicker.

Most of the crimes that ARE committed here are violent, and I mean VIOLENT. My little West Virginia hometown has been on America's Most Wanted SEVEN times in the last ten years or so. Most people here are extremely prejudiced against race, social class, neigborhood, etc. In some cases we have some goons who are only borderline civilized. I don't mean Beverly Hillbilly stuff, I mean real Neanderthal types who marry their sisters and daughters and crap like that. Everybody here knows of this one guy who lost his wife in a car accident, then replaced her with their daughter. Real sickkos.

Most domestic trouble here ends with a shooting. We had one guy who shot his nephew in the eye with a deer rifle over an argument concerning - get this - Chevy vs. Ford. When I was about four, my father's best friend had his head split to his shoulders from behind with a machete, then robbed for a couple hundered bucks. This guy is still walking the streets! Never even went to jail over it (even though he's been about a dozen times since then). My store is right next to a gun shop where a guy bought a Jennings J-22 and shot his family to death the same day. It's a small town, but everybody here watches their back. For a reason.

I live in a 4 but work in an 8. Glad I've got my trusty glock nearby at work. I figured my home was around that but I thought my work would be a little less.

Live in a 4, work in an 8. I'm not sure but that my work area should be a 9 or 10. You've got to see the parking garage here. All levels monitored by TV cameras 24X7. Railroad-type gates separate vistor area from employee area. Big old chain mail-like garage doors at the entrance, card access dusk to dawn coming or going. 2 rentacops, one at security desk and one patrols the floors. Houston city cop and car 6 PM to 1:00 AM, Harris County Sheriff 1:00 AM to 8:00 AM. If you work late you can request an escort to your vehicle. While there have been a few nice looking lady LEO's on duty, I'm an old married guy so I've not taken advantage of this amenity.

Employer will not let us CCW holders carry in the office. The policy is don't ask, don't tell as far as the parking garage goes. I work late so I carry OC spray (2 million SHU) in a pocket, 200 kV "shocker gun" under the front flap of my briefcase, and always have some kind of folding knife on me. I park as close as I can to the building entrance on an upper garage level. Just being careful.

I live in an apparent 3. You, my friends, or anyone for that matter, should be potentially aware of the fact that I am prepared daily, calmly and peacefully, and with acute awareness for an 11+. Peace.
