How'd you learn to shoot properly?

That was so long ago they didn't even have air rifle's ...

Not so- Merriweather Lewis (of the Corps of Discovery, during the Jeffereson Administration!), had one.

Airguns predate the cartridge case, smokeless powder, and even Wyoredman.
 
I have been told that some people in Vietnam would take a fire extinguisher, add an air cert/fitting and replace the nozzle with a copper tube "barrel", add ball bearings and hunt bats with these air guns.

This sounds quite Innovative to me.
