How to handle 40-50 year old ammunition

Break down the reloads, of course, but for the factory ammo, just shoot it.

plastic tipped bullets can be damaged in a hammer.

Less chance of that if you put a yellow foam ear plug in the bottom; I have one in my green RCBS hammer and it has been doing just fine over 40 years or so

Agree absolutely, those foam ear plugs also work great when seating some pistol with exposed lead tips.

I could have written that^ verbatim. Except for the "yellow" part. My earplugs are orange .

When pulling the bullets from the reloads, if you plan on charging with fresh powder and reseating the bullets, it would be best if you resize the case necks first. You may not get good neck tension on the bullets otherwise.
