YOU MISSED NOTING THE MOST IMPORTENT THING, a large liability insurance policy. And NO, I am not kidding even one little bit.
And so it goes...

If you do it as a business I believe you must have a federal license to manufacture ammunition from the BATFE. They may have changed that in the last 15 years but I doubt it. Doing it for friends and family is one thing but doing it for business purposes is another. Take care you don't run afowl of local fire codes as well.

Well it would depend on how much you want to expand.
Simple flyer's at sporting good stores, ranges, etc.
Table at gun shows.
Inexpensive signs like the political crooks use around election time.
Web site.
If you have quality, service and fair price on your side, word of mouth goes quite far;)

Advertise, DON'T FORGET THE YELLOW PAGES.

When I had a gun repair /machine shop 75% of my business came from the yellow pages. Then if happy with your service, those guys will tell their friends.

But yellow pages are best bang for your advertising buck.

Kraigwy, you're so 20th century! ;):)

Yellow Pages, maybe, if you're in a population center.

For my money, optimize your google search results. Far more reach, far less money.

I seriously can not remember the last time I used a paper phone book or a phone company directory online. I find EVERYTHING by google (or some other engine) search.

Also, be prepared to give away, sell at cost, a fair amount of product. People need to try your stuff to get the word out. There are enough companies that I already KNOW that I wouldn't risk paying retail for some new guys stuff, until he had some recommendations.

i do have an 06 ffl and i am loading for a couple police stations and people around town.....was trying to figure the best way to get online either through forums or whatever......i do 9mm $10 for 50rounds, 40s&w $12 for 50rounds, 223 $25 for 100 all boxed in plastic reusable containers with you suppling brass and shipping.....is that good pricing....the rounds are good target rounds

You need to compare your pricing to other established businesses like Georgia Arms. Their "canned heat" is reloaded. You'll have to learn to brag up your advantages... price, free shipping, superb accuracy, quick turnaround, whatever it may be.

It will take some time, and consistent quality and service, to make a name for yourself.

look in your area for any competitve shooters, clubs, uspsa, cowboy action ext. Get some shirts and hats made, find some shooters, sponcer some ammo, make them were the shirts at matches. Check to see if they have a practice night, my club dose every monday. We get lots of people who shoot factory ammo, and complain about the cost. Get out, spend some time with the shooters. maybee even take it up your self. Can you sell powder or primers? Hook up with the reloaders and sell them stuff cheap, make freinds ext!!! I will say alot of the competive shooters reload their own ammo, but theirs a good share who dont and are always looking to save some $$ on ammo.

ammorelds;

I did have my own store front and loading business for 22 years here in AZ. In the 1960 and 1970s.

Late in the 1970s the only insurance that we could get was through Loyd's of London.

My last year in business I had over 25,000,000 rounds that year and it was not enough to cover just the insurance and over head.
I have a P.h.D. in Engineering Science and worked at Rock Island Arsenal for just over 12 years at that time.
My Business partner had a Masters and worked in the arms industry all of his life back then.
They said we were "marginal" expertise back then.
We even had our own test lab, pressure guns, $50,000
worth of test barrels. The most modern equipment at the time.

ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO GO THE DISTANCE??
just asking!

"Oh yea we were sued, because we sold factory loaded ammo off our shelf, to a guy, who peppered a dove hunter."
That hunter sued us for part of $15,000 in 1972. We were found being "negligence" because we did not tell the buyer not to shoot above other hunters heads.

i got insurance for $2100 a year and i already sell to some local law enforcement and friends of friends.......its sounds like you should of had a better lawyer if you lost....you were just the middle man and have no obligation to instruct someone how they are suppose to use the ammo......and trust me i dont have to do 25,000,000 rounds to make it....its a side job

I see you are in South Dakota. You should talk to the owner of the Buffalo Chip. They burn thousands upon thousands of rounds through full autos during bike week. If you could supply them once a year it could make your year for sales. And leave some fliers laying around for people to take with them.

i will do that.....the only bad thing is im on the otherside of the state and over there they have black hills ammo....if they buy in any quanty they probly get a heck of a discount

Edward,
Sued by an idiot for something you could never control, ain't life grand!
The judge that even listened to and awarded such a ridiculous case should be shot!

My suggestion would be to start relaoding, and post information about your ammo and prices right here. If you are price competitive, you won't be able to keep up with the orders.

highvel

As you know a judge never heard the case!
It was settled out of court and done by the insurance company's working together.

Loading for a side side job is different than full time!
I was in business for over 22 years.

Saying I should of had a better lawyer shows you need a lesson in the Court System.

They have whats called Vicarious liability I suggest you learn about it!
