How to coyote hunt?

My comment was based on the wounding of said rabbit. In my mind at least, the intentional wounding of an animal sheerly to use it as bait is unethical.

Then how about just saying that and not resorting to name calling? That's a pretty good way to get yourself banned from a forum as well moderated as this, and really it is not necessary at all. If you've got a point to make, then make it by presenting rational thoughts or asking honest questions. But stay focused on the issue and don't start making personal attacks. That's just entirely inappropriate.

Gunner69 - Hopefully you did not give up bowhunting because someone else took a bad shot. You can only be responsible for 1) your shots, and 2) who you hunt with.

The guy who got me into bowhunting was a chronic "questionable shot" guy tha I had to stop hunting with when I was not able to change his behaviour. I got into rifle hunting long after I started bow-hunting, and now do both - depending on tag draws.

Have done too much varmint hunting
williamd- I can appreciate and relat ot that feeling. I worked my way through college and hunted pelts for side money. In 3 years, I shot, skinned, fleshed and tubed over 200 coyotes. I've had enough.

Gunner 69- Sorry about your bad experience. It happens, but we have to try to minimize the losses. Take the shots you know are good, avoid the rest.

T-Ray- I wonder if you can explain the advantage of crippling an animal and prolonging its agony over just killing it and using the carcass for bait? To yourself, I don't really care to read it. If you can, then explain to a game warden why it should not be illegal to use live animals as decoys. See if he buys it.

I didn't see the word or idea of wounding in the article that you gave such a childish response for. I an shoot a rabbit with a pellet gun and make it dead. Hell, it has been done with a slingshot. The scent is the bait, not just the noise.

In 1992 I was working with the State to thin the coyotes in a South Texas county. I killed over 2000 yotes that year. Most of the weekend varmint hunters will never see that many let alone kill that many. I can tell you how to kill yotes in South Texas and one of the universal ways is by calling. But how they will react to the call will be determined by your location and their habits. Applying the same techniques in the Texas Hill Country that I use in South Texas will yield next to nothing by comparison. You will need to learn how to call and learn from someone in your area. Anything else is a waste of your time. Coyotes are a very adaptable animal and a few miles of land can make a differance in their reaction to a call. And remember, if you don't have a good shot, don't take one. You'll never call that yote back up and that location will produce next to nothing for you in the future if you miss him.

Some are suggesting baiting techniques. Some states this is against the law. I would suggest talking with a Game Warden before baiting any site. Hunting over a dead animal of any kind is also illegal in some states. If you want to use a lure, it is legal in all states that I am aware of. The best lure is your female dog. Let her roam around where you expect to hunt in a day or so. Let her urinate and mark the spot. Ever yote within smelling distance will be by to mark on her scent. Ever wondered why all Coyote hunters have a dog? Now you know. And if you are trapping, set a trap in front of the spot where the dog urinated but off to the left of center of the trail. You'll have a coyote in a day or so. Now if you want to see how good you are, hog tie the coyote that is in the trap. They make wonderful pets.........not.

my comment said nothing about wounding an animal and i would never do such a thing. i meant kill it (with an air rifle) and then set it up as bait. again, it said NOTHING ABOUT WOUNDING, rather killing. by air rifle i meant 750fps or more. again, thank you for the remark

About 6 - 7 years ago it was estimated that San Diego County had 1/2 million coyotes. The population has not gone down, they have adapted. So, I estimate Imperial and San Bernardino counties at 1 million each, Riverside at least equal to SD. We skipped SD County for the latter two when hunting them. Have an old Navy buddy who lives in Brentwood and complains that the deer eat his ivy (two legal bucks in the group!) and the coyotes eat his cats. His wife liked to watch the coyotes until one joined her in the backyard when she was in the hot tub! She later called animal control who replied they could do little .... just cautioned her. They can't respond to the many raccoon, possum and skunk in-the-house calls. A few cougar in that area, too, so she may have more excitement coming. And, more cautioning. Plenty/many coyotes around, Bobcat, too. I just backed off personally. But, never hike the back country unarmed.

About the Asshat comment...good way to get banned. BTW, what is an asshat anyway? Also, this is just another prime example of assuming things...we all know what happens when we do that, for those of you who don't know, or havent heard, or you have lived in a closet for 100 years and never get out much, here it is...I'm pretty sure 99% of you have heard it, but it's worth repeating...especially given the relevancy to this topic...Assume

makes (ass) out of (u) and (me) =ass-u-me...

Help with 'Yote hunting...

I've got a couple of threads going called Coyote trolling that might help a little...Just use the search feature...That'll help to broaden your horizons...

I've had great luck just using a fawn in distress call and a mouse squeaker...Although you have to be careful using the fawn call..My father and I were nearly stomped to death by two very protective does one morning...I learned then that a bow stand makes things much safer...

Or at the very least less heart pounding....:o

castnblast,
i also wondered what it meant, but knew it wasn't exactly a kind comment. go to urbandictionary.com it tells you the meanings of all of today's slang.

it means you have your head up your butt therefore wearing it as a hat. i think that if you use the saying that you are one yourself, but that's just me (on my way to validictorian). it's not like i'm anything special or smart or anything like that:D

Why would you want to kill a coyote? I can't think of any other animal that symbolizes the American West. If you're not hungry enough to eat it you shouldn't take it's life.

Ourayguy lol you must be kidding right?? if not i think your on the wrong thread...its a sport man 1 that i love very much

If you want to shoot something that much go play paintball and blast away at your friends. I don't think it's sporting to kill just for the thrill of it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here:

1. Find 'em.
2. Shoot 'em.

:D JK, you've gotten some great advice.

Coyotes get to be a nuisance in many places, and "need killin" - need their numbers thinned. It's not just for fun. It's to help control their numbers, which in turn is beneficial to sububurn small household pets, quail, rabbits, deer, ranchers' calves/colts, and other desirable critters. I agree you need a reason to shoot something, but in many places, there's good reason to shoot coyotes, IMO. Sure they symbolize the America West. So does the rifle, which has served well in killing them all these many decades. :p

well here's just one reason off the top of my head:

I like to eat hamburgers. Hamburgers come from cows. Coyotes kill & eat cows. I would rather eat the cow than have a coyote eat one.

There you go.

btw- hunting forums are gonna be loaded with people that love to hunt things just as comedians love to tell jokes (again, off the top of my head).
