How much H/W do you do on your Ammo selection?

My h/w consists of,

  • Read reviews – buy a whole bunch anyway and test it all at the range for function

I already know what I want before I buy it(sometimes in store and sometimes online for delivery), and then I go from there.
 
I'm a cop and my carry ammo is issued to me, so that's not an issue. We're currently carrying Winchester Ranger Bonded, 230 grain .45 ACP. I suspect that there are contract issues and financial concerns that influence what we're issued.

My personal ammo was researched a long time ago, and is a continuing process. I tried a new batch yesterday that sucked, but I suspect that's more to my learning curve on new bullets than any fault of the load. I normally shoot one box of factory ammo per year, the rest of it is handloads.
