How much ammo is enough?

As I have stated many time before, enough is when the concrete slab in the den starts to sag from the weight of the ammo:eek: or in other words I will never have enough.
Just me now and I will also add that I will never own enough firearms:cool:

How much is too much:
All of it.
Until you have all of the ammo, you don't have enough.

When you have to rent storage to keep your ammo, you are getting close.
When you wear out a surplus Toyota forklift moving your ammo around, you are getting close.

You might have too much ammo if...

You might have too much ammo if...

- The USGS says your ammo creates a gravitational anomaly detectable from orbit.
- You have so many ammo cans, you stack 'em to emulate furniture, cover with cushions and white sheets.
- The floor of your garage is cracking from the weight of the ammo cans.
- The local SWAT team comes to you for spare ammo
- Your ammo cans and crates are labeled in 8 different languages.
- If you sold all your ammo, you could buy a Ferrari - for cash.
- Local gun shops call you when there's an ammo shortage

How much is enough?
Figure 200-500 rounds for each handgun caliber, more if you will go shooting frequently. For bolt rifles, I like having 120-140 rounds in each caliber. For military type rifles, about 1500 rounds each. These are "baseline" numbers to always keep on hand.

I don't think you can ever have enough .22LR ammo, unless you're using your food budget to buy it.

I just bought 100 more rounds of .40 and 200 of 22LR that I just have to try. I am planning to hit the range tomorrow. I know I have at least 2000 rounds of .22 already, and I have 600 rounds of .40. Not much by some standards, but that's not including any rifle or shotgun ammo.

I have 1 army surplus ammo can full for each handgun, 1000+rnds for each "assault" rifle, a couple hundred rnds for each hunting rifle, and the supplies to reload more of everything.
I feel more than you can carry is surplus, but there's no such thing as too much.

Ammunition as currency?

No way..

It's not a good idea to supply or resupply your "competition" for limited resources.
If you want some "high value" commodity to stash for trade - buy asprins.

Hang onto your ammo. If you trade someone a "little", you just handed them the means to get the rest.
