How much ammo is enough?

I was in a gun acquaintances basement the other month and noticed that he had a LOT of support beams near a corner of his foundation, which didn't make much sense to me at all. I asked him about it and he said something like "Oh, I didn't ever show this to you?"

We walk upstairs to his master bedroom which has a very large walk in closet. He opens the closet door (which opens outward BTW) and low and behold there's another door behind the regular closet door with an electronic keypad. He opens that thing up and says here take a look.

He had at least 100-150K rounds as well as several very nice class 3 firearms. I was significantly impressed. Though not surprised to hear about his recent divorce (His 4th).

If you're aware that he was over spending his budget then perhaps I can see saying that, but without detailed knowledge of his financials I don't think that comment has much merit. I'm a one-gal man for years and years now but I'd dearly LOVE to have some class three firearms and all that ammo. Nothing weird or divorce-worthy about wanting some good machine guns and a pile of ammo!!

Oly

I was just imagining my wife's reaction. :-)

I can only guess at to the 4th divorce. Though there is a reason I call him an acquaintance and not a friend, which I suppose speaks negatively of his personality.

I was jealous though, so no I wasn't saying there was anything WRONG with having all that stuff.

With the price of ammo these days I don't buy any except the Federal and Remington 22lr 550 round bulk pack that Walmart sells which are still good deals.

I buy ammo in bulk when I find good deals.
I still have about 80 boxes of 9mm WWB 100 pack that I got about 7 or 8 years ago when they were $8.99 each. I have couple cases of 9mm Blazer that I got for $2.99 each when Sports Authority was getting out of gun and ammo business. They would limit you to 10 boxes so I would go in the morning toget 10 boxes and then back during lunch time for 10 more and then 10 after work and 10 more at night after dinner. I did that for a week when they ran out. Remember when Century Arms was selling IMG 5.56 for $120/case? I still have about 4 cases left. I still have 8K+ rounds of South African 5.56 battle packs from Sportmans Guide. I got them when they had the special about 8 years ago for about $110/k. I picked up every box of 12G/20G shotgun shells from K-Marts in my city when they were selling them out for $0.99 per box. I got a pallet load of them for very little money. I did same with 7.26x39. 5.45, 308, etc.

Very good thread.
I never realized the huge differences in stocked quantities and the varied ideologies regarding a large cache or not.
Being the Proud Lazy American I have worked so hard at becoming I have made my life with numbers as simple as I can, up to this point.
1k per machine. I treat a 22lr differently.
The 22lr machine gets the most with 5k per machine for SHTF or simply good old plinking.
What they eat gets replenished as a game. Hunt and find between several stores in the area. Find locations, times, etc...
The game gets it's difficulties with the calibers, availabilities and pricing.
Beats most other hobbies...eh?

As a rule of thumb, you should have enough ammo so that you end up with one more round than your enemy. LOLLL

Seriously (if you can afford it), 10,000-50,000 rds. of ammo for guns that you shoot a LOT (e.g. a .22);

5,000-10,000 rds. for guns that you like to shoot, but don't get the chance to shoot as often as the .22s (e.g. your 9mms or .40s).

100-200 rds. each for guns that are old relics, but could be used in a dire emergency (e.g. an old Krag, or an 1886 Lebel).

Heck, I even have 40 rds. for my old Vetterli-Vitali 10.4mm rifle.

Of course, if you have Class III stuff, all bets are off...
