How much .22 ammo is enough?

Interesting. Is there small stores anywhere nearby for the perishable stuff?

Yes, but by the time I buy in bulk and pay for shipping, I'm still coming out ahead. I buy my meat and bring it back in a cube cooler. Everything else is either shot or caught out of the bay.

A gallon of milk is $11.00 here and the cheapest produce starts at about $2.50/lb. Everything else is also priced accordingly.

Well, our milk here is $2.68/gal, but your produce isn't quite as bad as I would have thought. Pricey here too, in comparison to what it was for so many years.;) And I understand we're not going to believe what's going to happen to citrus prices after this winter.

Sorry, everyone, for the OT.

Pre-panic I had just over 20,000 .22's. My wife and I went through 500 every week or two depending on how busy we were. I am down to 10,000, and have cut way,way back on rimfire shooting after this mess.

I'm lucky in that I used to shoot NRA Bullseye about 13 years ago and I did buy a lot of different brands and types of .22LR. When I bought my 15-22 a couple years ago I bought a couple thousand rounds for it to consume. So, for me, buying what I could afford worked out.

What I don't understand is why .22LR is being hoarded. Yes you can take small game with it but it's not even been mentioned as a "threat" and should be regulated.

Maybe someday all this cr..aziness will settle down.

Having enough means being able to keep shooting at your normal rate of consumption for as long as it takes for one of these panics/shortages/demand spikes to subside and for supply and prices to return to normal.

That might be 50 rounds for some people, it might be 50,000 rounds for others. For me it's somewhere between those two numbers. :D
Maybe someday all this cr..aziness will settle down.
It's already getting better. I know of 3 gun shops right this moment where I could walk in the door and walk out with a few hundred rounds of .22LR. One of them is currently selling bricks of the Remington Thunderbolt for $30.

I buy .22lr any time I see it, and then it's only a box or two. I probably have close to 13, 000 rounds and I still don't think that is enough because I like shooting .22s more than anything else, so, the more I can keep on hand the better. I wish I had 40, 000 or 50, 000 rounds of it.

I always donate a lot to 4-H and Boyscouts. I still donate as much as in previous years, but had to limit my rimfire shooting. I am shooting a lot more 9mm & 5.56..

Last month I was at Walmart and asked the lady behind the counter if they had any 22lr. She pulled a couple bricks of federal bulk from behind the counter and said they were $23.99. I only had $21 on me but she sold it to me anyway. Really nice lady, If you don't see it on display at Walmart it doesn't hurt to ask if they have some behind the counter. Yesterday at the local shooting range they had plenty blazer 22lr for $4.99 per 50 pack. I passed on it.

My rationale is have enough to shoot at my normal rate, for 1 full year without buying more. Now, I'm no where near that level, but it's my goal. Buy a box here and there when you can.

Is anyone afraid an ammo tax is what is driving the hoarding?

An ammo tax per round would kill the cheap price of .22lr

No, I'm not overly concerned about a federal ammunition tax. There is already an ammunition tax in TN and I don't purposely buy ammunition outside the state to avoid it. This is one of the few taxes that I support.

My rationale is have enough to shoot at my normal rate, for 1 full year without buying more.

That was my starting rationale and it grew. I say buy and keep as much as you like or can afford. Shooting some helps otherwise you're essentially stocking up for the sake of stocking up.

I got some insider info via text from someone unloading the truck at walmart. I had to ask the guy at sporting goods to go check in the back after he told me that they didn't have any .22..... 2 minutes later he walks out with a case of CCI tactical 300 round boxes :). But of course other people showed up right behind me to buy some. One of the guys I've met as he resales ammo for rip off prices ( I met up with him a year or so ago to buy a box of bullets for my deer rifle). The con artists are still the culprit.

Sure they are.....

Last saturday, I needed to go to one of my local shops for a firearm transfer. So, I turned the trip into a loop around the valley, to check the status of ammo and reloading components.

Overall, I'd say there's about 175,000 rounds of .22 LR sitting on the shelves around here, in just the 5 stores I chose to visit - plus a healthy dose of .22 WMR, .22 Short, .22 WRF, even .17 HM2, and (lots of) .17 HMR.

I can't find Sierra .224" 69 gr or 77 gr MKs to save my life, but there is no shortage of any kind of rimfire ammo at what most people consider reasonable prices. (But there's no way I'm paying what they're asking. I buy when there's too much supply, and the buying is good. ;))

And... Last week, a member of TFL sent me a PM to let me know that he received his two backordered cases (10,000 rounds) of Federal Game-Shok 31 gr HP .22 LR, since he knew it was one of my favorite rimfire loads.
If distributors are shipping enough ammo to retailers that retailers are, in turn, filling 10,000+ round individual orders, I'd say things aren't anywhere near as bad as some of you seem to think....

Tin foil hats cause cancer.

Than you're lucky. 22lr is rare in NW Nevada, and what you can find is usually overpriced at $0.20/round or more. I picked up 200 rounds today at a gun show (the limit), but it's very unusual to find it at those prices, below $0.10/round. 17HMR seems readily available.

I've been buying 22 ammo for about 30 years. In that time I've collected a couple cases of random ammo that I don't normally shoot. The stuff just accumulates.

I do tend to have a couple cases of stuff I normally shoot and replace as I shoot. This year has been a little lean. I have only bought match ammo this year at normal prices. I have also limited my shooting to mostly the good stuff in my Anschutz and CZs. More than 50% of my ammo usage in the past 10 years has been with Lapua, RWS and Eley anyway.

I would love to find a case of CCI SV at normal prices. That is my go to for hunting and precision plinking. So far that is where I've been hurt. I broke into my last case. Paid less than $250 for it pre-panic. Luckily I found a few bricks of 25 year old Federal Champion Standard Velocity in my random pile. I can probably hold off a few more months.

My best advice is to keep a couple cases around. Try to replace as you shoot. When you find something that really works, buy an extra case. Only buy what is readily available at normal prices.

I can remember when 100-200 rounds was plenty to have on hand for me.
I know the gun shops keep some 100 rnd mini mags put back to sell with new guns. I'm wondering how this self induced shortage has affected new 22lr gun sales in general? With Sigs new promotion, they're giving them away.

I was at a sporting goods store the other day and saw a guy buying a .22LR rifle. I asked him whether he had checked on the availability of .22LR ammo. He said that he hadn't and I told him that he might want to go look before he buys a .22, since I could not even remember the last time I saw .22LR ammo in any stores. I told him that he could reload other calibers for around $2.50-$3.00 per 50-round box. He still bought the .22 rifle though. So, there are people who will buy the .22 rifles even if you warn them that there is no ammo available for it.

.22lr is available anywhere that as an internet connection!

Armslist

You might not like the price. That is fine...go buy it for your low price. Oh wait...you can't because it cost more than that now.

You will have a hard time buying gas for $1.50 a gallon too. Is there a gas shortage?

When you figure in your time to track down .04 to .05 a round .22lr, then you would like have been better off paying $45 for a brick on armslist. Walmart has to love all those people coming into their store every day hoping they can get a cheap box of .22lr.
